Guys, ftp.rackable.com is still up and wide open to the public. I found the following:
ftp://ftp.rackable.com/public/Technical%20Support/Pdf%20files/MVD/MVD-S3116-Manual-1.4.1.pdf
It's a manual for a very similar NAS system. If we dig deep enough, we might be able to find some manuals on this...
Guys, I've got some pretty cool news. Like I said last week, they accepted my offer and I was going to pick up mine from their Novi warehouse. Turns out, they decided to send it to me free of charge over the weekend! I have it sitting next to me right now. Now all I need is some SFF-8088 cables...
They're in Novi. I should of mentioned you can't just walk up and rummage through their stock. You have to buy something in advance and then set up an appointment to pick it up.
EDIT: My offer got accepted, but it's too late for me to take lunch and pick it up. I'll head over there on Monday.
I just submitted an offer for one of these. Hopefully they will accept today so I can go pick it up at lunch. I'm local to them and have purchased an InFocus LP860 projector a few months ago off of their eBay store. Awesome bunch of guys with a MASSIVE warehouse of computer crap to go through...
I made a Solaris 11/Napp-it system for a friend of mine using 3 m1015 HBAs and this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121346
It's been running strong for three months now.
Hardware raid is a no-no. JBOD each of the drives on the controller.
When using ZFS in an ESXi environment, it completely depends on the ability to pass through the hard drive controller to the virtual machine.
Using any type of hardware RAID and/or hard drive virtual configuration completely...
HOLY CRAP it works!!!! This is incredible!! Solaris 11 express now has 100% support right out of the box for this card!!! No messy driver install after loading the operating system!! AWESOME!!!!!
What kind of motherboards are you using? I got the same error using an intel server motherboard...
If I remember correctly, that's happening because you need a ps/2 mouse and keyboard hooked up to the system. I believe there's a passage about that in the manual for a 9240-8i.
This is awesome news! I've been wanting to try ZFSGuru for a while now and haven't been able to because of this limitation.
I'll give this a shot in the next couple of days and see how it goes. Thanks for the info!
More information is needed. You say you bought two of these enclosures correct? Does it happen to both of them? Have you tried plugging only one of them in? What about changing the hard drives around so they're in different slots?
Since you didn't say what type of motherboard you have, I'm...
Define unreliable. What are your logs saying?
Are you running encryption to take advantage of the built-in AES-NI acceleration? If not (and I don't even know if AES-NI acceleration will even benefit from multiple cores), there's really no need for more than a single core. Save your cores for...
Looks like I gotta go and buy up as many F4s as I can before Seagate gets their unreliable hands into the mix....
Samsung, this is insane and horribly disappointing.
Awesome! I will give this a shot tonight when I get home. Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, I've got another one for ya. When rebooting, my encrypted folders lock back up which is great. However, if those folders are shared out via SMB, I must un-share them and then re-share them after decrypting the...
Well what about using dd to read from the requested disk to get it to light up? Something like dd if=blah of=/dev/null with a large file size to overcome cache so that it actually reads from the drive. Can you make some buttons do that?
_Gea,
Another feature request. Can you make buttons under the disks menu to identify individual hard drives by continuously flashing the access light? That would rock.
_Gea,
Got a bug for ya. The smtp username field under napp-it, setup needs to be longer. I can't authenticate to my smtp server because I need more characters to type in the entire email address.
Using smtp-test under jobs, email appears to have a non-character limited field (or at least a...
_Gea,
I've got another request. I currently have another Solaris 11 Express with Napp-It server set up that's going to live in my detached garage as a disaster recovery server. I would like to replicate to the server on a scheduled basis. This functionality is already built into Napp-It, but...
_Gea,
Great interface you've written here. I've been using it for about a month now with my setup. Thank you for adding authenticated SMTP support. My only suggestion at this point is to add an update button under the system tab. Call me lazy, but I'd really love to have a button for that.
I've still got a couple crap drives laying around with CPSs. Give me a set of commands to run and I will test this. One of the drives had a head strike (external drive that took a dive off my desk while hooked up), so it dies nicely after hitting the bad spots.
Yeah yeah, I just figured that out. :p
Patrick is the Chuck Norris of home server storage IMO. Both of you let me know if you need anything from my end with regard to testing the M1015 with Solaris 11 Express in an ESXi 4.1 environment and in a bare-metal Nexenta environment.
I just now saw the link in your sig. Are you Patrick? Great web site with a buttload of information. Keep it up!
I stand corrected, but you still didn't define "enamored". Given your findings, Odditory's, _gea's, and sub.mesa's on this forum, we all know how touchy ZFS performance is relative...
In this case, I believe the answer to this question is no, especially when the LSI manual says that it's a true x8 card. There's no mention in the manual that you can use a lower bandwidth slot. HBAs aren't like video cards where you can plug them into a half bandwidth slot and expect them to...
Yet another example of FUD (great word odditory!). No specifics what-so-ever and no reflection on process of elimination to determine whether or not something else within the mix is at fault. This is a pretty easy one though. Your problem is the fact that the card is a PCIe 8x device that you...
No, I had to download the imr_sas driver directly from LSI's website to get them both up and running. After unzipping and doing a simple "pkgadd -d ." command, I was up and running after a restart.
You've said the term "flakey" with regard to these drivers in another thread if I remember...
sub.mesa is correct. I've got two of these cards running in my main Solaris 11 Express NAS with napp-it and another one in a test Nexenta Community Edition that I'm considering for a disaster recovery server that will be housed in my detached garage.
All three cards are working great on my...
Seriously, just try one of them and go from there. If you use Solaris or OpenIndiana, you'll want to download napp-it which gives you uber easy menus to figure everything out through. You'll learn a lot very quickly just by playing around.
I forgot to mention that I do this as well. My friend and I tend to build similar setups year after year. With that, we've backed up each other's data in the past for an offsite copy.
I currently have a thread on here detailing my ESXi setup with Solaris 11 Express and napp-it running the NAS side of things. Total usable storage currently is 8TB from a raidz array of 5x2tb hard drives. Of that 8TB, 50% is full and only 1TB is critical information that I care about (the rest...
Yeah, things are going great so far unclerunkle. Like I told you via PM, I asked the eBay seller to send me some replacements for the bad ones which I should have in my hands tomorrow!
If you recall, I've unintentionally done this already. The 2TB EADS drive I've RMA'd with 1500 CPS was running in the system for a couple nights with horrible transfer rates. During this time, the controller didn't flinch a bit and never wanted to kick out the drive.
Correct. I've been...
Does ZFSGuru have a built-in driver for my M1015 HBAs? I loaded it up real quick and the drives do not show up.
A couple of updates. I'm currently in the middle of transferring a test copy of my data from the old WHS server over to the new server. Sustained transfer rates are roughly 45MB/sec...
