Does anyone with one of these ELMB monitors use an AMD card? Before I publish my review of the VG27AQ and look like an idiot for getting it wrong, does ELMB work properly on AMD cards? TFTCentral mentioned getting it working on AMD but not on Nvidia, and that's the situation I'm in. I don't...
Back when Netscape Navigator was a thing, I was pretty good at throwing together a webpage. Everyone had roughly the same resolution monitors, so if you kept your page width less than 800 pixels, you were good. Now everything needs to be responsive, so you can look at it on your phone, sideways...
I've put together a video review of the LG 24GM79G, and I was hoping the HardForum Display folks would tell me everything that's wrong with it!
Some notes:
It's twenty minutes long, which is definitely too long, but I wanted to have an initial video explaining where all the measurements come...
SwedishMeatball WinDAS works fine on Win 10. Just make sure to register msflxgrd.ocx. It's been a while, but I think I had to use the SysWOW64 directory instead of System32.
crt_modern_user Check out this post I made on BlurBusters in 2014 about getting WinDAS to work for both an IBM P260 and a Dell P1130:
https://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=504
Try spacediver's suggestion about the COM port. If that works, great! But I'm worried that your adapter...
CRT-Guru It's a shame you can't use YCbCr on your AMD card 'cause the Benfei works pretty well for how cheap it is... but only in YCbCr.
I think your monitor is the same as my Dell P1130, and I'm able to lower the pixel clock into a region where the Benfei in RGB doesn't have the green...
arnemetis your thread here inspired me to try the same thing myself, although my setup seems to have gone a bit easier than yours.
I was looking to network three PCs with a 10Gb connection; two are in the same room, but one is in the basement, so I needed at least a 10 meter run for that one...
Enhanced Interrogator I didn't even know that was there!
I'll get to the EDID, but I did some more testing. Custom resolutions added in CRU will only show up in the Nvidia control panel if they're below 340 MHz. So for instance, 2300x1737x60 shows up (399.99 MHz), but 2300x1740x60 does not...
I didn't mention the name because at the time I thought it was lousy. But since it seems to work OK with YCbCr, it's the Benfei HDMI to VGA adapter.
He linked the amazon page in this post...
CommandoSnake Thank you! Although now I'm having a lot of trouble getting custom resolutions to work in YCbCr. The max that will show up in nvidia's control panel is 2048x1536 at 74 Hz (334.46 MHz). A single Hz higher and nothing shows up in the list. I've been messing around in CRU for about 40...
Enhanced Interrogator The adapter's default extension block reports a max HDMI bandwidth of 225 MHz, but that seems to be ignored by the Nvidia driver. Even with no modification, it'll display... an "image" at 345 Mhz. I tried changing the max to 400 or even 600 MHz, but nothing changed with the...
Just got in that HDMI adapter CommandoSnake mentioned earlier, and it's pretty awful.
While it'll display an image at a 345 MHz pixel clock, the quality is terrible. In fact, anything past 181 MHz shows green lines and dots on the dark parts of the image. The auxiliary USB power made no...
MaZa At those exact settings, PC mode measures 4376:1 and the other 4014:1 ANSI contrast, but these are limited in precision because the Optix XR can only measure brightness to the nearest hundredth (0.04, 0.05, etc.).
You're right about the transition from 45 to 46 brightness, but at lower...
Samsung targets BT.1886. Here are the gamma results for PC mode:
White line is the target response, while the yellow is measured. I know it's a bit off, but if you start adjusting the brightness and contrast settings to make the whole line track better, you start clipping detail in the...
SuplexCity Sure! These settings work on my display (firmware 1207) and give a DE below 2 for nearly every color. As I mentioned to Ape, these should get you in the ballpark, but without a colorimeter, you can only expect so much. If you're used to most displays, which usually ship way too blue...
I took the image and adjusted levels in an image editor:
I'm not sure how to explain why you didn't see any artifacting/banding when you connected the display with your laptop, because that jpeg is pretty much 100% banding and artifacts...
The first image you linked is a highly compressed jpeg, and if you were to open it in any image editing software, it actually looks like the garbled mess you're seeing on your screen. Most image compression algorithms (jpeg, h264, etc) devote bits to high frequency details (like edges) while...
I posted in April this year about the Windows 10 Creator's Update messing up the functionality of the StarTech adapter, but it works fine now. That could have been the update or nvidia's driver or some combination of both.
For my Dell P1130s (4:3 with a max hor. freq. of 130 kHz), I typically...
jyb I have the same StarTech adapter you have, and while I had issues earlier this year getting past 1280x1024x85 after the Creator's Update, it seems to be working fine now. It's good for around a 232.6 MHz pixel clock. It looks fine up to that point, but after 233 MHz, it just doesn't display...
Damn Dirty Ape Are you still trying to get HDR working, or are you talking about calibration settings in general? I have a colorimeter and can give you my settings if you need. Your panel may differ slightly, but I wouldn't except so much that my settings wouldn't get you close to 6500K...
Hah! I'm kind of in the same boat. I have another system with a 980 Ti driving a CRT, but I'm still considering upgrading my 1070 because it's not quite good enough for 4K. This TV is actually pretty OK for playing racing games with a controller. Forza 7 looks great, and I'm spending a lot of...
A while back, GoLDii3 brought up how this TV has pretty bad yellow trailing on black to white transitions, and he linked a video of The Unfinished Swan, which looked, and still looks, pretty bad because of the yellow smearing. We've known about the slow pixel response on this VA panel for a...
Thanks for the very detailed response! I've been a member of the BlurBusters forum for quite some time, which is where the interest in this project originated.
As you've mentioned, one of the biggest issues with segmented backlights is actually how well the LED diffuser works; the ON segments...
I've been working with monitor LED strips attempting to modify them to act as a scanning backlight:
That strip has four 11 LED segments that were controlled by a TI TPS61199 before I took the monitor apart.
How are the strips you have configured? It may be different for a TV than for an...
I have the KU6290 model and took some macro shots of the pixel structure when upscaling 1920 to the native 3840. Here's a comparison of two adjacent black pixels scaled with the GPU (default scaling with nvidia card) and using the TV:
There's been a thread on nvidia's GeForce driver forum...
For the P1130, the outer plastic case has to come off. It's just two screws and some plastic tabs. Here's an old picture:

Great news!
Especially since I just picked up another Dell P1130 from Craigslist. The listings for CRTs have pretty much dried up in the last couple of years, but luckily I found this one listed for $10 as just a "Dell monitor" with no mention of CRT anywhere. It was being used in a metal...
It's not a problem at all. I keep the TV on brightness 11 (out of 20), which is about 180 cd/m^2. Even at settings down to about 7, the duty cycle is high enough that it's not that bothersome, but I'm a CRT user. Any lower than that and you may notice visible flickering.
At 100% brightess, I...
andy4theherd That background is RGB 128, 128, 128, which is too light to show these panel defects. Use something like RGB 25, 25, 25 and you'll be able to easily see the gamma shift as you move your head around; it'll also expose any panel non-uniformity.
HollandAmerica These are VA panels, and what you're describing happens with all of them. There's a big gamma shift on dark grays when you look directly at screen. For small screens, with less of your view subtended by the screen, this may not be a huge concern, but sitting right in front of a...
For nvidia users, the method that rabidz7 posted does work, so thank you! And EnhancedInterrogator, I should have done this sooner. This is a game changer. :)
I'm using a Dell P1130, which has a max horizontal freq. of 130ish kHz and tops out at 170 Hz refresh regardless of the h.freq. (so I...
EnhancedInterrogator you're right about the interlacing. When I answered previously, I just checked if the image was displayed while I was in the nvidia custom res utility. In it, I can create any interlaced resolution, and it'll properly display as interlaced; I can even save it. But once...
Meeho
At off-angles, pixels at the very edge of the screen disappear. Here's a video of a 1 pixel white border at the screen corner:
https://gfycat.com/OblongAccomplishedKakarikis
Is that what you're seeing?
Panel, the second shot I posted is a super-macro I took last night of the pixels (really hard to get in focus, btw); The 6290/6300 definitely use a BGR layout, but like Rahkeesh said, the layout doesn't really matter. You can just run the ClearType Text Tuner.
For anyone still considering this...
40" is enormous compared to most monitors. I'm sitting about three feet away, and at that distance, I find the height (19.6 in) just a bit too tall, and because of the 16:9 aspect ratio, it's way too wide.
I've been trying some alternate aspect ratios and resolutions to see if I could find a...
GoLDii3, on firmware 1142, I don't see any change on the youtube video you mentioned, but this TV in general has egregiously bad pixel response times. The worst "yellow" ghosting I can find is on an image like this:
Moving that around quickly looks pretty bad.
I'm holding out hope for a...
Well, this thing is enormous.
Got the 6290 a few days ago, and I have the same question as Savoy had a few pages back. This is on Windows 10 with a GTX 1070.
When using the HDMI UHD Color mode for my PC, I can't turn it off without the TV losing the connection and just reporting HDMI No...
That post on blurbusters was nearly two years ago, and I've been using the Dell P1130 exclusively since. It's on for at least six hours a day -- usually more, and I always run it at it's maximum horizontal scan rate (130 kHz). For desktop use, that's 1340x1005 at 120 Hz.
It was manufactured...
The new adapter came in yesterday, and, of course, it worked flawlessly. I wanted to wait until I could verify that it worked properly before mentioning the brand, but it's the Adafruit USB to TTL serial cable. No problems at all on Windows 10.
Only two calibrations in the last year, but each...
