$50k is a bit out of our price range, but interesting post nonetheless.
I priced out the AWS High I/O reserved instance using light utilization (trying to figure out what the differences are in utilization levels) which uses SSD and it came out to $12k per year, I realize there are other...
If we have a disk heavy application using SQL, can we get respectable disk performance on reads and writes in the cloud or are we much better off (like order of magnitudes better) rolling our own SSD RAID?
We're capturing a lot of tick data (small size, many writes, frequent writes) for...
This is a probably a dumb question, but if we had to choose between 4x100GB and 4x200GB for a RAID 10 configuration, should we automatically go with the 200GB?
Are there any benefits for performance, reliability, and/or expected lifetime by going with the smaller sized drive?
Unfortunately...
We're upgrading our server for our startup company that went live this past Sunday.
I was curious what some of the top brands/models of SSD drives that people would recommend. I will be using it in an raid array, emphasis on performance and reliability. This will be used in a server running...
Good guess, I propped it up on my desk, took a better look inside. It wasn't PSU fan it was one of the 7970's, between the two they installed an X-Fi sound card which I don't use with my B&W MM-1's so I just removed the card and now noise free! The fan was rubbing against the sound card
Another recording, this time using CrossFire while playing XCOM, had to shut down system, doesn't sound healthy.

Noise gets louder as I play XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
Doesn't matter if I put them in CrossFire or not.
I have adjusted the fan speed to the point where I can noticeably hear the fan so it is not the GPU fan. Seems to start up when I turn on my PC and after a few...
I ended up purchasing a custom built system, specs below. I was wondering which of these Amazon EC2 instances it would more closely parallel. I realize this is not Apples to Apples, but wanted to know where the strengths / weaknesses were in buying iron vs. renting virtual.
Here are the two...
I can see why they didn't support it in SC2 which I bought as well. SC2 is a competitive game against other players and having that extra real estate would be a very big advantage. Blizzard didn't want the "pros" to buy wins, they wanted to cater to the grandma's.
Something like D3 though...
I read about D3 not supporting eyefinity so that changes things a bit, and even in windowed mode, it only uses 1 card (not both from what I have read) and even then, the game will show objects only on the middle third, whereas the first and third portions will only show shadows or outlines of...
I have read a lot about triple CF of 7970 for three 30" monitors, I don't think I need that much GPU power so I am only going with single crossfire (2 cards). I will mainly be playing Diablo3 when it launches. So three questions:
1) Are there any known problems with 7970 CF w/ 30" eyefinity...
So I finally have gotten around to assembly. 1 quick question, I purchased the SFF8087 fan out cables, looking inside the box and how the HDD's are connected it looked like there is already a suitable cable that is nicely routed through the case and tied up, can I just use that instead or do I...
I am ready to pull the trigger on this NAS config, want to make sure before I place my order I am not missing anything. Any advice for different parts (particularly RAID card)? I want to run WHS 2011 w/ RAID 10, this will be for business (SQL Server) and personal use to stream content. Can I...
I know this is an old thread, but to address the OP's question of fastest decompression software (for RAR extension compressed files). I have found 7-zip (~11 minutes) to be substantially faster than WinRAR (estimated at over an hour by WinRAR) to decompress a 6 file (spilt into 1.5GB files)...
So I have the opportunity to expense a pretty decent system that I will use for development as well as for gaming. Let me know if I am missing anything simple like cables and what kind of cooling you think I will need. I do not have any experience OC'ing but would like to try to get these up...
Cool thanks, this is what I came up with - decided to go with USB 3.0 instead of eSATA:
Western Digital Caviar Black WD2001FASS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive (recertified)
Rosewill RX358 RX-358-U3B Full Aluminum Cover, metal tray 3.5" Black USB 3.0...
Should I just get the best sata II enclosure / disk I can afford or are there any sata III enclosures available (I have not been able to find any)?
There are sata III expresscards for purchase, seems silly that I cannot find a sata III capable drive or enclosure to put a drive, am I missing...
Hey Danny -
If I upgraded the RAID card to this:
$756 1x Intel Controller Card RS2WG160 16 Port SAS 6GB S PCI-E X8 512MB Retail
Would I only need:
5x NORCO C-SFF8087-D SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 Internal Multilane SAS Cable - OEM
or do I still need 7?
ETA -- Assume I go with this case: 1x NORCO...
It's not going to be too heavy for reads and writes, it's a development box that will be heavy on the computation. We will be storing a lot of data though, about 10 years worth of tick data (possibly from multiple sources) for a number of financial instruments. The initial write dump will be...
awesome, thanks for the info. I need to read up on raid, where is a good starting point? I understand the basic differences between the types of RAID but have never configured one.
Will these two cards allow me to setup multiple RAID configurations (three in total or four if you include the...
Ok thanks, still stuck on the external disk storage and raid controller options which is the area I know the least.
$420 6x Crucial 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) ECC Unbuffered Server Memory Model CT51272BA1339
$110 (after rebate) 1x XFX Black Edition P1-750B-CAG9 750W ATX12V...
Good stuff here, I don't mind the flames, I deserve it, yup, need 4 disks for RAID 10, also do not really need a high end video card in here as noted. W/o said GPU, do I only need a 500 or 750W PSU? I'd probably want to be conservative in case I do want to add to this system.
Do you guys...
I am looking to build the following system and need advice on picking two RAID controllers. First one will be for RAID5 for 5 1TB disks, second one will be for RAID10 for 3 1TB disks.
Updated parts list 4/23/11
Total $3,692
Case: $ 312 1x NORCO RPC-4220 4U Rackmount Server Chassis w/ 20...
Assuming it is not water cooled, I think I can put it together myself, not sure how much "skill" is required to apply the processors + heat sinks + whatever "goo" I need to keep it from overheating. I feel like there is too much of a markup with Dell/HP, just pricing out memory and a +1...
I want to build a (new) system to use for SQL Server development w/ some SSRS (Reporting Services), nothing too hardcore but I want it to have a little beef and good storage as well as expandability.
I started pricing one out at Dell and easily got above $4k, I don't have a budget per se but I...
not to hijack, but might be related.
About every other day (IF) I leave my laptop on, I get an Operating System not found black screen. 1 reboot and choose Start Windows Normally, and I am usually fine. Is this normal?
OS is a 240GB that I use to boot Win7
Not sure if this helps, but we're currently running RAID60 w/ max number of drives. The guy I work with didn't know the total offhand, he thought it was 64 drives but that didn't add up to me for RAID60.
here's the card (looks kinda crappy to me, maybe we should get an upgrade anyway)...
thanks!
for our existing raid controller are you guys saying we shouldn't have any problem setting up 3 distinct raid volumes?
I just rdp'd into the box, looks like we are using the following storage controllers:
DELL PERC 6/i Integrated RAID Controller
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator
Microsoft...
an example of 1 of our tables:
# Records: 1,012,514,673
Reserved (KB): 347,030,384
Data (KB): 270,485,768
Indexes (KB): 76,497,384
now keep in mind we have over 2 thousand of these tables (albeit not this large)
current size DB: 2,508,436 MB
I'm interested in doing some research on setting up a raid, 3 to be precise for SQL Server. Thoughts on a config like this:
1 filegroup will be made up of a RAID10 array for Data
1 filegroup will be made up of a RAID10 array for Indexes
1 filegroup will be made up of a RAID10 array for Log

I'm in the same boat, looking for a new router, tired of my linksys dropping connections all of the time.
I think I am going to pull the trigger on this one, aside from the one 1-egg review the other reviews are very positive...
Have you looked into the Hybrid drives?
I have read good articles about them and even picked up a 500GB Momentus XT from the egg for like $130 to use as my secondary drive w/ my F240 SSD.
