Hi,
All the information provided is indicative of a firmware / NAND controller failure. At this point, as I have mentioned previously, such manifestations of erratic / unresponsive controller is normally replaced with a corresponding SSD.
Guess this is a closed issue...
So been trying to figure this out all weekend. I finally edited my fstab file and removed the "discard" option on my mounts to keep my syslog from being spammed.
I've at least come up with a repeatable situation surrounding trying to trim and the syslog errors.

Hello all,
System info: Ubuntu 14.04.2 and Areca 1680ix
My home server has recently started acting flaky and I strongly suspect a disk in my array is going bad. The below messages have recently started showing up in the syslog.

Hello,
So I bought a Areca Raid card open box a while back and never got any 8087 cables with my purchase. Am looking to finally expand and was hoping someone might have some spare cables around.
PM if you are interested in unloading some.
Very respectfully,
Garrett

Under warranty rights(and a major reason that act was passed) is that "modifications" don't necessarily clear a company from fault. Only modifications that are directly shown to show fault can clear a company of warranty responsibilities. Think about it...
This sounds illegal. If a manufacturer warranty is issued it cannot trump first sale doctrine. When you buy a used car, the warranty on the car transfers. I don't see how the same shouldn't apply here...

Update: pgjensen where were you able to determine it was beta firmware from? Am I missing a firmware description or update page or something?

Not sure of all your guys' thoughts on this but figured I would post it for your info...

ok... I have to admit... After I bought my Norco 4220 and plugged it in I wished I went for a server with integrated fan control (being honest). After a short while I was pointed to the fact that for ~2k I could have purchased a Supermicro case with integrated SAS expander backplane and a...
Anyone come across these yet?

Looks like they are upgraded backplanes for the 4X20 series to support SGPIO.
if there is anyway to integrate a fan header connection that would allow for motherboard control of the fan board (either integrated or stand alone) I am really jealous of our dl360g5 that spins up... then DOWN after power on.
Something like that would be fantastic.
I just called about the RAMSAN 620, here are some price points (unofficial) on bare bones solutions:
1TB = 55k
5TB = 220k
They also just released their 630 solution with capacities up to 10TB but they were unable to comment on pricing, although they did say the 630 should save 1-20k over...
First off... Thank you guys for your help! Mif and I already talked and he was able to talk to me about some great stuff! To address other questions raised.
For the sake of better requirements lets say a 3TB usable minimum capable of being scaled to tens of TB's with an increased budget...
Hey guys,
Hoping for some help. I've been working with a co-worker to spec out a large capacity SSD storage server which will be used to facilitate large database queries. Right now its taking multple days to do these queries but were hoping some new hardware technology would alleviate that...
Went looking for these posts after recieving a PM and found them buried and hard to find. For those interested new fanboards are now available. Here are relevant threads...

I'll check to see if it works in the 4020 as well. the 4220 and 4020 look so much the same I would be surprised if the mounting holes for the fan wall changed. If the fan mounting holes haven't changed then this fan wall should be usable in both the 4220 and the 4020.
Can any of you who...
Hey guys, been installing my rails and I know the instructions are crap but noticed I could only get about 3 screws to match up on the case. Searched through the threads here and on AVS for about 40 min with no luck. Was hoping if you guys have any spare time and a camera conveniently located...
Use the search function man... I hate to be that guy that doesn't help at all but these questions are really best answered by google and some forum searches. You're also not providing any details which could be used by us to help you. Looking at your previous posts all you did was ask people...
It's not about the NSA aspect... its about speed. Secure erase is faster than almost any software driven solution as well as being a better solution as well. Thats because its hardware driven not software. Multiple Block overwrites would be something like DBAN.

DBAN < Secure Erase
Per other thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1438225
DBAN may be easier... Secure erase is the NSA developed and approved solution built into every ATA hard drive since 2001. Your choice..
So been doing alot of looking around and have found a few interesting things:

Fancy fan controller thats fun to look at...
Thanks guys for the ideas. I will definetely try the 7v trick. I'm fully aware of the standard practice of replacing the fans but I would like to avoid this. I would actually almost be more interested in installing a fan speed controller instead.

Hello everyone,
Just got my Norco system built and powered on. VERY HAPPY! I ran into a problem though... I wasn't anticipating having any issues with the noise of the system as it was going to reside in the basement and in a rack... well... I anticipated wrong. Turns out the fans are so...
Aren't these drives still for the ripping of DVDs? Sounds like were off topic and talking about either HIPAA, Financial, or more sensitive data now. If you have to return your nuked dvd hd's ... shouldn't be any liquid metal requirement... unless the doctors server will be living in an area...
google "secure erase"... read, learn, Be happy :)

Cliffnotes: Sine 2001 every ATA hard drive has a hardware driven wipe command built into it called secure erase. It was introduced as part of the ATA instruction set. All drives have...
Yeorwned,
Looks like a good budget rate 1st line software only data recovery company. Glad you had good experiences with them. However, looks like they aren't certified to open up the drives. Instead they refer these drives to more experienced and qualified companies. So you are right...
Should be interesting as long as its been briefed at some of the most recognized industry experts conferences for multiple years by a recognized professional with a business run off their experiences to back up his credibility.

People, please watch the videos I listed before stating things such as needing clean rooms, etc. to do any repairs. The video's explain why this is a myth and how drives actually make their own internal dust.

I'm going to be mounting into a rack with square holes. I don't know the brand unfortunately because my roommate bought it. So was there ever a consensus on this topic on which rails were some of the best to use?
I don't mind more expensive rails as I just find them on ebay. Quality and...
for next time watch these videos... just so happened to watch them less than a few weeks ago and I imagine they would have helped you immensely. I learned a TON about recovering hard drives and one day might even try it myself. Good luck again and hopefully... as long as you haven't messed up...
