i really wanted to upgrade to skylake from my i7 920, but looking at dozens of motherboards from asus, gigabyte etc. i just thought WTF and closed my browser. i get there are premium and cheaper versions, some get "gamer" slapped on them to be sold at a premium. how does that add up to 21 SKUs...
ep3 or 4 would be pointless by now unless they put everything into a new engine. even if you say "duh, what matters is gameplay and story" valve would hardly be able to keep up with expectations. they should just move everything into HL3 with current tech and start where ep2 ended.
if people claim onboard audio was bad, they may be using the audio connectors at the front of their case. now that connection is ultra garbage in most cases and will sound terrible, but that's a flaw in the testing method and not necessarily the result of bad internal audio.
