Thanks for the clarification. I'm going to talk with our IT guys later this week and see what could be possible. I'm not too familiar with what all of the policies are yet. I just know that the current situation with backups and data preservation isn't a sound way to do this and the Pentium 4...
Ok thanks! I wasn't sure if a VM was the route to go, so I'll do some more thinking on it. I still may do a VM like you suggest on a much newer PC so I don't have to try and cobble together an old PC from obsolete parts and then just keep that one off the network as well.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Part of the reason I'm trying to figure this out is they have conflicting goals. We are "supposed" to be backing up all publicly available research data to the university networks, but they assume that all PCs are Windows 10 with the backup solution installed. But...
Hi all,
I'm not too familiar with VM but looking to explore this as a possiblilty.
I work in a research lab and a few of our instruments use software that only runs on Windows XP. The main one I'm concerned with uses a NETBEUI connection to the instrument on an ethernet cable (using the...
It still is a decent PC. The past 2 complete PC's that I've moved on from that were in good condition I asked around to friends/family with kids in school or whatever if they needed a PC for school work.
If you can't think of anything contact me via PM. Perkins Observatory in central Ohio...
Simplyfun called it correct. Even underclocked it started to have a strange coil whine yesterday and now it crashes consistently. I'm chucking it and going with a 1070 or a RX570ish card when I see a good sale.
Unfortunately I just bought a new lawn mower, clothes washer and dryer... so it'll...
I PM'd the rep. If he can't/won't do anything or doesn't reply then yes, that was my plan Crosshairs. Onto the second question... next card?
I see the RX570 mentioned, what is the equivalent nVidia generation... the 1060?
XFX Rep, please see my thread here about my XFX card problem. https://hardforum.com/threads/xfx-r9-270x-crashes-unless-underclocked-options.1934314/#post-1043011790
My RMA number was denied for ticket T1705090002 .
Is there anything I can do to get this card fixed or replaced?
Thanks for the suggestion, I didn't even know there was an XFX rep here! Hopefully I can get it taken care of (and yes, I'd love to move up to a different card).
My PC was crashing to randomly striped screens (or sometimes just straight black screen) during intense games. I tried all the normal steps of using DDU to uninstall the drivers and install new ones, refreshed Windows 10, reinstalled Windows 10 completely, checked SSDs for errors, ran MEMTEST...
Thanks guys. I'll look into a separate addon... but darn it... it USED TO WORK FINE MS! The Win 8.1 search was fantastic. I could just swipe from the side and start typing and nearly anything I was looking for (files, settings, help) just popped right up! Even before the Anniversary update...
So the Windows 10 search (which is a huge step back from the "swipe" search from charms on a Surface 3 Pro) has been annoying me lately. Previously, if I clicked the search button and typed in the name of a file it'd pop right up like magic. After the 1607 update it will no longer display the...
In my opinion the Kindle readers (NOT tablets with Kindle apps...) are far superior to print. Any book I read now has a consistent font that I prefer, the same size, same spacing and I can adjust it to a very comfortable brightness. I don't have to try and bend the book awkwardly to not break...
I have my old rig (built a totally new one this time) that I'd like to part out.

I made the original PC in 2008, my 400watt PSU died and I replaced it with the corsair in 2009. The GPU was added in 2010 to replace my venerable 8800GT!
Yes, this computer has lasted a loooong time and still plays most games great. I finally upgraded to a 4690k and hope it'll go a long time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Good advice on the case! I was hoping my graphics card would hold out a bit for now, so I will try it before ordering another. It should be fine since I dont have any newer games right now that would really push it.
I've ordered the RAM. It is almost $40 cheaper...
After a great run with my Q6600 SLACR build I've got the itch for a new system. My current build is:
CPU: Q6600
RAM: 4 gb DDR 2
MOB: Gigabyte P35 mobo
HDD: Crucial M4 SSD
GFX: Sapphire Radeon HD6950 2gb
PSU: Corsair HX 620w
Monitor: Dell 27" Ultrasharp (2560x1440)
All in a generic no-name grey...
1) iCloud should backup most things, but I don't use it
2) Plug it in to a PC/Mac and use iTunes.
3) Download Dropbox and put files in there.
I'm sure there are other ways as well (wifi transfer?). I moved our stuff using iTunes.
I had a similar problem with my iPad 4 and a factory reset after the update cured it. Safari kept just randomly closing and it would take 2-3 tries to get to recognize the charge cord was plugged in. All good after a reset.
No different than a clean install of a Windows service pack I guess haha!
When my old Droid 1 from Motorola had a problem, they overnighted me a phone with barely any questions other than "what is your address". Not sure how much better you can get than that.
The Maxx is just a tad longer, but much much wider. It is quite a bit heavier. Go : http:///15fYaxE
The displays are very close, you'd have to be an eagle with a magnifying glass to see any difference! The camera is maybe "slightly" better on the iPhone in darker settings... but its a...
Both are excellent phones (I have Razr Maxx HD, wife has iP5). Major difference is the feel of the phones. The iP5 is long and narrow and the Razr Maxx is very wide. My wife can't even reach half of the screen on my phone if using it one handed.
Go to a store and handle both. iP5 will of...
I'd just say take it back. Be sure your iCloud stuff is backed up and its an easy switch. I don't have an iPhone but my wife does and she had a similar problem with her volume rocker. A new phone fixed it.
Back in college I wanted to be [H]ard but my budget didn't allow for it. I had an eMachine and had GREAT luck with it. I upgraded the video card and played the crap out of Tribes 1,2 and Red Alert 2!
I also did some college work on it. I think.
WOW! My intention with this thread was to give kudos to a small developer for a program that really helped me enjoy Windows 8... not to bitch about Win8! The details of Win8 have been beaten to death in other threads.
I'm the same. I've used MSE since it came out and have never had a problem (on many PCs). But, I only use legit purchased software and browse forums/sites that have legit operators (like [H]).
