Who here is keeping their 3 series and skipping 4 series nV cards?

I pm'd you the details. There have been a few long threads on this forum you can search up and read about the 43 samsung and the 43 aorus fv43u having pixel deformity issues in the entire top half of the displays. User "senn" on this forum was one of the members that discovered it first, it was then confirmed that all 43s use the same panel revealing the 43 samsungs also.
Samsung released a firmware for the 43-in version on November 10th that fixes a lot of these issues. I read someone on Reddit that posted about 10 days ago that said the panel looks mint with no text issues at all on the latest firmware.

Ok let's see if they fixed it. I hope so that would be nice.

Not sure if I'm going to entirely skip RTX 4000 but I'm def not in a hurry to upgrade. 4080 isn't a huge improvement over last-gen top end and 4090 rules but is more than I want to pay right now.

I planned ahead and caught the "GPU dip" back in September, snagged a 3090Ti on deep clearance at Microcenter while stock of 80Ti/90/90Ti was still plentiful and I had a choice of '90Ti cards at half MSRP.
I have to laugh at myself and the state of the market a bit... During the worst of times I bought whatever 3070Ti I could get my hands on for a terrible, offensive price- then a year later during the best of times paid the same price for a 3090Ti of choice. Ah. Hmm. I could've waited a bit longer for 4080 but that would have cost hundreds more for a good AiB card and it's fun having a "halo tier" GPU with excellent PCB/VRMs and silly amounts of VRAM capacity and bandwidth.

I'd say I can't imagine needing more than a 3090Ti but I have the dual misfortune of playing at 4K, and being a Cyberpunk 2077 enthusiast. A challenging combo LMAO.
It's funny, whenever I play any other game, I'm suddenly more satisfied with my GPU performance  If I get sad about my framerates I can just fire up Doom Eternal with RT at native 5K and suddenly the 3090Ti feels more powerful!

I am till on rtx2070s . I always skip the next version, but with the mess of the 40's being so high as a used car . I think i will see what changes after market shack up this year. :woot:

How much did you spend on the 4090? Where did you buy it from ?
The 4090 was the $1600 MSRP, on launch day, from Newegg.

The regret stems more from letting the 3080 go for just $500 when it is very clearly holding its value better than I anticipated after the 4000 series launch and upcoming 7000 series launch.

I was pondering OP's question yesterday. I recently sold my 3090 in anticipation of buying a new card. I'm now thinking that was a mistake.

Firstly, there are literally only 2-3 games - and only one of those I care about playing - where I'd see a material difference in performance where a 3090 doesn't run >60FPS at 4k.

Secondly, I have now, as is tradition moved back to my "back-up" card, a 1080. I've found for 80% of the games I play, it runs them fine. Even at 4k, it runs older and less graphically-intensive games perfectly well.

Lastly, do I really want to fork over >$1200 to companies in a duopoly who are (complicitly or incidentally) setting prices at levels that would make Adam Smith embarrassed? And practically, when I think of the other interesting things that amount of money could buy (you can literally construct an entire home gym for this cash), I'm a bit at a loss.

Not me. One lesson I learnt from the 2080 Ti fiasco was to not skip gens. You just waste time to enjoy games you want to enjoy. I kept my 1080 Ti for quite sometime and then upgraded to 2080 Ti in its last year or thereabouts. Just didn’t make sense.

Since then even last gen I learnt that 3080 wasn’t enough for me so I sold it to a miner that funded my 3090 purchase.

This time I went all in day 1 on the 4090. YOLO and all that. Glad I played Plague Tale 2, Dying Light 2 and now Modern Warfare 2 maxed out with near 240 fps at 1440P the way my monitor was built to play games at.

The thing is you are stuck at 60hz. If you haven't experienced 4k144hz you might not even know what you are missing. As soon as I saw the 4k144hz display I wanted I pounced on it. Best decision I've ever made. I would honestly dread being back at 60hz. Sometimes after a driver install it defaults to 60hz and it feels miserable. Not responsive and leaving messy trails in everything games mouse pointers windows everything. Then toggling 144hz it feels magical. Like a ton of performance was unlocked. You might think you are ""ok/fine" at 60hz but you are truly missing out on such a luxurious feature that in my opinion is a must have for every gamer no matter what type of game you play.
That out of the way I am now enjoying a nearly 10 year old game. Batman Arkham Origins (I beat Arkham city & Arkham knight adored both of them ) and you would think a 10 year old game would run effortlessly on a 3080Ti hydrocopper at 4k144hz? Lol it is kissing %80-90 usage average in most of the game. This is why I still want a water blocked 4090 to cut that usage in half. Less power means less heat being thrown into my PC room. Noise isn't an issue being on water. But heat and knowing that I'm already at the limit of what a 3080Ti can do at 4k144 is an easy decision. I need a 4090 to be comfy for the next 5 years or more.

Thinking of selling my EVGA RTX 3060 XC and upgrade to 3080 12gb, 3080 Ti or 3090. Not EVGA though. Would like a used Tuf or Gaming X Trio - hard to find (especially, from a seller who isn't trying to gouge/scalp someone).

I have a 3060 for 4k/120hz gaming lol. I actually downgraded from 3080 a few months back because I wanted to upgrade.
I'm actually pretty happy with this 3060 as it runs most games ok. I can max out New World and it runs it at 35-40 fps, which is fine for a filthy casual like myself.
But there are some games coming that I want to play, like The Witcher 3 remake, Callisto Protocol and Diablo 4 (which is probably not very demanding, but still) and I want my games maxed out and preferably above 100 fps.
The main problem I have is my build is all white and I want a white gpu. The only AIB that make good white gpus are Asus and Zotac. Galax doesn't sell cards in EU.

I'm not stuck at 60hz, my display does 4k 144hz. It's just the games I play don't require or see much benefit >60hz; the games I play that benefit from >60hz, a 3090 meets or exceeds that need (and once you're running 90 FPS, running higher is an extraordinarily diminished return). And the little benefit I would see >60hz is 100% not worth the price of entry. Realistically, I'd be paying $1000+ to run a single game, CP2066, at higher FPS -- I'd rather get a new piece of gym equipment (or two) for that.

I've got 3 gaming PCs in my house with RTX 3080 and I don't plan on upgrading the GPU for a while. First of all, we all play at 1440p resolution and the current games we play are already maxed with good FPS. Second, there aren't any new games we're looking forward to that needs more power. Just to give some perspective, one of the big selling points of the RTX 3080 was that I had a GTX 1080 and I was looking forward to playing Cyberpunk at 1440p.

I'll upgrade from my RTX-3080 10GB when and if the RTX-4080 drops down to the realistic price of $899, where it should have launched originally. And no nVidia I'll pass on a $999 4070.

lol I'm still on my 1080. I was thinking about getting a 3080 or 3090 right before the 40xx series launched (there was some pretty decent deals), I have now decided to see how the 7900xt/x performs before dropping any coin.

The 3090s and 3080s were dropping in price big time for awhile, but now almost going back up. Im in a big city and checking Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, the base 3080's are selling for $600+, the 3080 Tis selling for $700 to $800, and 3090s going for $900 - $1100, these are for used cards, not new.

3090 here and skipping this release for political reasons.
Not going to put money into Bidin's economy.

Skipping the 4 series? Probably not. Mostly just can't find the 4090 I want right now without effort. However, my 3090 performs great at 4K still in every game I play, so I am in 0 rush to get a 4 series card either. Not going to play the "hunt down a GPU game" again.

I don't see how you can game @4K with a 3060 AND you downgraded from a 3080 because you wanted to upgrade?!!? What?!? :D

My EVGA is just too loud although I'm learning about fan curves now - I'm the type who just wants to install the card and leave it but now I have to figure out how to reduce the noise - seriously, it ramps up just from *starting* a game - and not really doing much in the game.

So, now, I know I need an Asus (Tuf?) or MSI card that offers a bios (for quieter performance). Can anyone shed any insight on this? Well, it help that much?

Oh yeah, I guess I have to learn about undervolting, too. I tried Afterburner, Precision X1 and watched a friend use GPU Tweak 3 - GPU Tweak looked simpler to use but way more intuitive. Alas, my choices are the first 2.

The other reason to upgrade to a 3080 or higher - is that I aim to be heavily into video editing and want to use Blender. So, I feel that one of those cards (3080, 3080 Ti, 3090 etc.) will only help when doing that - plus, it should allow me to use 1440p - with no issues (hopefully) - with my 12700K. Supposedly, I should minimize any bottlenecks with such a combo - or, in theory?

Edit: I meant, to add, I should be able to use 4K in some games - well, various games I'm interested in playing/trying - and they should run at 4K with a 3080+?

I also wonder how all this works with using a 4K TV as my display instead of a monitor?

Sorry, if my topic(s) went all over the place. In sum, not upgrading to the 4080/90 because it's just too much $$ to justify it but I will try to find an ASUS or MSI 3080 or better. I think one of the Gigabyte 3080s has a 'quiet' bios, too? Maybe, the Gaming OC card? Or am I mistaken?

Ahh ok. I never would have imagined this.

That was terrible when I got the 4k 144hz display but needed an HDMI 2.1 3000 series card to be able to unlock the 144hz. I remember those rough times last year lol

What I meant is I wanted to upgrade to a next-gen card.
I sold that 3080 and bought 3060 because I figured that 3060 will lose less value as it's a cheaper card.

And to answer to your other questions about noise, you can just get MSI Afterburner and set the fan speed to static 50% or 75% or something, whatever you find to be quiet. There are advanced options, for example setting the fan speed ceiling, but for me I usually just set it to a tolerable static speed and leave it at that.

I haven't played any games I think over 2 months now. So I don't mind sticking with my 3080Ti FE, and eventually back to a 3090 if I can figure out how to watercool it in a Loque Ghost case.

But if GPUs are going to continue being stupidly difficult to get at launch this hobby might be dead to me. I just don't have it in me to chase and obsess over GPU drops.

Cyberpunk is still a buggy mess. I invested a few hours into it only to have the escape key bug out on me and It's unplayable without the key. Maybe I haven't investment enough time Into it but I'm failing to see what the big deal about cyberpunk/witcher /Odyssey is about. Maybe I've lost my passion or maybe I just haven't gotten far along enough to see the benefits.

Last one I bought 14 years ago was a GTX 295 and I just bought an RTX 3090 Ti right before EVGA said no mas. I betting this old man is good to go.

My 3090 still mows through all of my games at 4K. I have no reason to upgrade for a long time.

I only got my 3080 12GB a few months ago and its more than powerful enough for me for gaming.

Weirdly the only reason I want to upgrade is because I actually want more VRAM for rendering related situations, but I honestly think a 3090 would suite me just as well as a 4090.

Though I'm more than likely gonna wait and see how things are when/if AV1 video encoding actually takes off.

Nope, upgraded from a RTX 3090 FTW3 to a RTX 4090 FE. Big uplift in performance. No ragrets.

I had the choice to upgrade my monitor or video card. I spent my 1k on a 43 inch TV and kept my 3080. Also upgraded my audio. To me my money was better well spent on those two upgrades. Enjoy yo shit!

How do you like your TV? Did you have a PC monitor before? I'm just wondering how they compare (the tech., not the screen size). I have a 50 inch 4K TV.

I was heading that way myself, but was fortunate to get a 4090 at launch. I'm getting too old to be crossing my fingers every time I want to purchase an upgrade to a piece of hardware in my system. I see this being my last upgrade and eventually changing hobbies somewhere down the road once this system gets long in the tooth.

I almost was tempted to go 4080 but found a 3090 instead. Should be fine for 1440 165hz play.

Interested to see what Amd has so Nvidia drops some more sku's. The 4050 should be amazing.....

I am considering th40xx series because of the folding ppd I can get the same ppd as my 4 2080ti's ,with a 4080 for a third the power usage.

That's just it. Am I going waste time for days/week/months to line up to throw >$1000 at a video game toy? It's just bonkers, especially when there are so many other hobbies where I neither need to spend as much money, and certainly something don't need to waste my precious time searching for hardware to enjoy it.

I'll likely keep in the convo, but in Danny Glover's words: "I'm getting too old for this s&@t."

Let see, on Steam bought
  • Masterchief Collection
  • Forest
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
Besides finishing Crysis 2 then 3 and a few other games. Then these, there is nothing the 3090 or 6900XT can't handle extremely well on a 120hz OLED. Never been in a situation where a new generation of GPUS came out or coming out that would have almost zero impact on gaming on what I am playing for the next year and beyond.
