GIGABYTE AORUS FV43U 43 inch 4k 144 HDR1000 QLED monitor

Could you test Picture by picture? I am interested in what kind of splitting options and resolutions it offers.
Sure.
It splits left and right, and there's the option to swap inputs left and right.
Keep aspect ratio and full/stretch is available.
Basically all resolutions up to 3840x2160 are available. It defaulted to 1920x2160

Now the issue. Everything seemed to work great until I messed with the resolution and the built-in full/aspect ratio setting. I can no longer get it to scale correctly, and now have black bars on the left/right and the image is squished. The only resolution that works now is 3840x2160 centered with black bars on the top and bottom. The secondary input (in my case HDMI) is working just fine.

Update: Toggling the refresh rate in Windows display settings fixed the scaling issue.

Thanks. Shame that there is no top/bottom split option. Does it also limit you to 60 Hz if you use PbP?

No, I was able to use 144Hz PbP. HDR does not. Even though you can enable HDR with PbP, it looks horrible.

There is only 1 question.. Someone checked the real power consumption of this monitor? On the gigabyte website reported 280w but it looks like not true. It is too much. A normal TV or monitor should be around 60w - 100w.

Typical monitor/TV does not hit 1000 nits or above and that figure is the Max power consumption. My Samsung Q90T shows 120W Typical and 295W Max but it's rated at over 1400 nits. With that in mind, I would say the FV43U probably runs ~80-100W typical and hit 200W-250W when running HDR contents.

The manual I downloaded says 240W max. I'm getting around 157 Watts with HDR, under 60 watts with normal SDR usage.

I think that 240W is max peak with all USB ports utilized and speakers at max volume. The 3 USB ports can provide a total of 33W, so 240W max sounds about right.

Good call, forgot all about the Speakers and USB as I haven't use them.

Still seems pretty ironic to me that a display like this costs less than a videocard.

I'm torn- I know there will be other 43" models equivalent to this coming soon, and I'm not sure if I want to wait for the 42" OLEDs. I really don't like my 48" 2015 curved Samsung 4k display, but there's nothing wrong with it (other than it being huge and not having the best PQ).

You got a JU too? I got one in 2015 JU7500 too but at 40". As good as it is, It's just doesn't cut it nowadays with HDR contents all over the place so I got a CG437K last year and I have no regrets and I think the FV43U looks even better and I'm even trying to come up with an excuse to get another one to replace the CG437K ( which is working great but it does have some quirks that bugs me to this day).

I would've waited if my old tv/monitor hadn't started to crap out. The monitor space really sucks at the moment. Pretty much everything out there has some draw back or another.

Yeah. I was always planning on upgrading my 2080Ti to a 3080Ti but that’s not likely to happen now, so even if I got a 144Hz display I couldn’t really drive it that well with my current setup. Freesync would be nice tho. The 48JU6700F makes for a decent enough display for a fake-HDR 4K TV but it’s just too big on my desk, and not very sharp. Real HDR would be nice too, but the TV is working fine and I would probably have to give it away because nobody would want to buy it, even for $200.

Very tempted to press that “order” button at Amazon.
 
Gigabyte support has requested a video demonstrating the local dimming flickering I'm experiencing so I made a better video that shows it. It looks worse in person.

Have not seen it at all on mine but I keep it at HDR1000 all the time. However. Something like this happened to my CG437K the other day. I don't even need to move a window around, just moving the mouse pointer was causing the brightness to flicker on the screen but it was gone once I power cycled the display. Maybe my CD437K is dying . That would be a good excuse to buy another FV43U 😜😜

I couldn't keep contemplating if it will be a downgrade or not compared to my CX48, but I kept hearing good things about the FV43U so I just bit the bullet and ordered one. Should be grabbing it today or tommorow.

Now I can truly compare it side by side to my CX48, I just wanted a smaller screen than 48", that's all really.

I'm trying to decide between these two monitors, so once you get one it would be amazing to hear your perspective!

Really curious if the FV43U will be that much of a downgrade compared to an OLED panel. Mostly around ghosting, black smearing, and quality of the blacks.
 
Has anyone tested out how the KVM and PBP work with 2 computers? Are you able to mouse seamlessly from one input to the other when using PBP or do you have to swap inputs in the KVM menu?
 
It's been available in the USA for a while but mainly just Newegg. Amazon has limited quantities. B and H photo is out of stock.

DId nVidia Control Panel correctly ID the display and set RGB 10bit full? Are you using multiple display?

Try a different DP output on the card or a different DP cable. Also make sure that if there is a DP connectivity setting on the monitor that it is set to 1.4. Occasionally my monitor will revert to using DP 1.1 bandwidth which would prevent it from going into HDR mode. It's usually noticeable on startup since color will also be set to 4:2:0 instead of RGB when it happens, and there is black crush prevalent.

What happen when you open the setting menu with remote do you see HDR1000 on the top right?

If you're using multiple display, are they all HDR capable? I had some problem setting up HDR on my TV from my laptop as the laptop display is not HDR, so instead of the HDR button on Windows setting, I have to select display 2 and then click on "Windows HD Color settings" and set HDR for each display.

The DP setting would most likely be in the System category based on the screenshot above.
 
Hey wiz33, can you tell me what your NVCP settings are for HDR to work on this display?
 
I just got this monitor and I gotta say it surpassed my expectations. Coming from a 4K 60Hz 27" IPS display (LG 27UD59 to be exact), this is a major step up. Currently using 150% scaling and text is still clear, blacks are actually black unless in a dark room where it starts to deviate a fair amount from looking pure black, but it's good enough as this is still LCD. Ghosting exists, but can only really be seen when using blur buster's ghost test (not much even then) where in game, can't notice it at all and response time is great. Gsync works very well, but I do find it a little slow when switching between a game and windows as the screen blacks out for 2-3 seconds each time it's switched (happened on the Asus XG27UQ as well when I had it, so is it just how gsync is?). Black uniformity is great and HDR just works where HDR1000 is the go to profile for any HDR content. Updated the display's firmware which solved the heat issue which is nice as it got pretty hot before the update. Using Tom's Hardware settings for picture settings (Green profile with colours tweaked a bit where R - 100, G - 97 and B - 99) which looks accurate to me at least. Local dimming works great as well for SDR games and movies as it increases contrast greatly with virtually no blooming. I have to note that I don't watch movies, play games or work in a dark environment, usually dim light at night or natural light during the day. I have played Black Ops Cold War and Forza Horizon 4 (HDR) so far which looked great. 4K 144Hz over display port with DSC works great, no issues there with RTX 3080. Watched a couple of a scenes of The Dark Knight and the whole Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift movie, both in HDR which looked amazing.

I included some amateur black uniformity shots with and without local dimming for your judgement.

Have to put PC on the floor now as you can see my left speaker is a little off edge. Desk is 160x80 cm (IKEA Bekant) for reference.

As of right now, this is definitely a keeper. I do wish I had an OLED to see if that $600 CAD extra is worth it, but for $1400 CAD, this is great plus this size is comfortable for me. The only OLED for reference I have is my Sony Xperia 5 II, but that's too small to compare to of course.
 
Local dimming isn't doing much other than turning off the 4 zones in the corner in that test cross image. The TV only has 8 zones.

I'm surprised nobody else has tested subtitles especially in HDR content, it's basically unusable since the 4 bottom zones have to flash/light up and dim as subtitles appear and disappear.

yea, still better than this on an OLED where there should not be blooming and sub-title gets super bright due to the aggressive ABL

LG CX vs Aorus FV43U

Ok, so I did a little bit more testing of HDR games side by side with my LG CX48.

So far I spent about 25mins testing Horizon Zero Dawn, and about an hour in Days Gone in HDR. Here is my opinions so far.

Firstly, ill start with the main positive for this display.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, the Aorus FV43U is about on par if not better looking than the CX48 in terms of HDR image quality, mainly because of it's peak brightness. This FV43U display can get very bright in HDR, the lighting can really bring out detail on alot of the surfaces in the game in Horizon Zero Dawn. Where as on the CX, even though the image quality looks similar, overall it seems a tad more dimm compared to the Aorus. I am unsure if this is the ABL kicking in? But it definitely is no where near as bright as the Aorus in this particular game. But the CX has slightly more color depth, and all the dark areas of the game, shading, shadows etc, stand out more. Ontop of that, the CX felt smoother and quicker to play on, the input was faster, and motion more clear. It feels asif the Aorus definitely has noticeably more input lag than the CX. Which is a shame for me, because I am a very sensitive gamer and such a characteristic is hard to bear with for the Aorus. I did not spend much time in Horizon Zero dawn, but I can conclude that the Aorus FV43U definitely did shine in HDR here. If only the CX could get as bright and stay as bright, then it would be unbeatable. Hard to pick the winner for this game, but I will say the Aorus because the brightness does make for some pretty scenery, where as it is more dimm on the CX.

Next up, is Days Gone HDR. I will start of by saying, because this is a darker, and grim looking game compared to Horizon Zero Dawn, the CX definitely outshines the Aorus FV43U here.

For some reason, the flaws of VA panels can show on this game when compared to the CX OLED. For example, the dark trees in the distant in the image below, look less clear on the Aorus, and the motion is noticeable slower, and I was using the Speed OD setting.

Watching the shadows of the trees and branches in the distant sway from the wind, looked blurry and undesirable on the FV43U, whilst on the CX they are crisp and clear, no motion sickness there. Same when walking inside the semi-dark rooms in this part of the game.

Next up, the color on the CX pops noticeably more than the FV43U on this game. For some reason, the FV43U looks washed out in comparison. Take a look at a comparison below:

The roof detail is much more prominent and noticeable, and looks alot more realistic on the CX48 than on the FV43U.

On the CX48, I can once again see more detail on this yellow statue thing on the roof in this part of the game when compared to the FV43U.

And one of the major deal breakers for me is the input latency, as mentioned before the FV43U feels considerably more laggy when moving in-game. It was much more noticeable in Days Gone. When I was aiming a gun at the Zombies I felt troubled at getting a clear shot because it felt like there is a larger input latency, where as on the CX, I felt the input latency was much quicker, the handling and movement felt snappier and smoother, much more desirable to play with. I even turned all VRR and Vsync off, but there is such a noticeable input lag on the FV43U. Here I was thinking that a fully fledged gaming monitor is going to feel more responsive than a TV as a gaming display, boy was I wrong, LG have done well here.

Coupled with the fact, that motion is much smoother and clear, the colors and textures are more detailed and vibrant on the CX in Days Gone, the CX is a clear a winner for this game compared to the Aorus FV43U.

Sorry I did not take any ingame photos of Horizon Zero Dawn for comparison when I should have since that was where the FV43U did shine. Maybe I will do this later.

But to summarise so far:

FV43U
- better brightness, bright HDR games will look really nice, although the CX still looks good in bright HDR games too.

CX48
- much better motion
- feel snappier, less input lag, smoother
- slightly more vibrant, colors and detail can pop in certain games
- much better black levels, no contest here. Some people say their FV43U looks like it has perfect blacks, I can tell you rite now side-by-side with the CX, the CX is far superior. Hence darker games will look much better.

I only tested these 2 games, later I will try several more HDR games to compare and report back, until then I am unsure which of these 2 I will keep, but I am slightly edging towards the CX because of its quicker response and input. Maybe I need to update the firmware on the Aorus or something but the input lag is annoying too much for me, is there any other way I can lower it?

That's odd on the input lag side of things. Only thought could be the hdr has higher input lag? Regardless, I would think the aorus would still be lower. Monitornerds measured it at 5 Ms at 144hz. I thought it felt faster than my Asus 4k120hz 43 which was measured between 6 and 10ms. The lg is measured at 7 something in 4k120hz, and around double that in HDR. So yeah, something must be off.

Try testing a game in SDR and see how that feels?

Anecdotally, I was playing Destiny 2 pvp and thought it felt faster and smoother on the aorus than my Asus (or any oled I've played on). Possibly due to the fact I was utilizing 144hz most of the time (3080 can run this on high at 4k and greater than 120hz most of the time--pvp mainly)

The roof detail is much more prominent and noticeable, and looks alot more realistic on the CX48 than on the FV43U.

On the CX48, I can once again see more detail on this yellow statue thing on the roof in this part of the game when compared to the FV43U.

And one of the major deal breakers for me is the input latency, as mentioned before the FV43U feels considerably more laggy when moving in-game. It was much more noticeable in Days Gone. When I was aiming a gun at the Zombies I felt troubled at getting a clear shot because it felt like there is a larger input latency, where as on the CX, I felt the input latency was much quicker, the handling and movement felt snappier and smoother, much more desirable to play with. I even turned all VRR and Vsync off, but there is such a noticeable input lag on the FV43U. Here I was thinking that a fully fledged gaming monitor is going to feel more responsive than a TV as a gaming display, boy was I wrong, LG have done well here.

Coupled with the fact, that motion is much smoother and clear, the colors and textures are more detailed and vibrant on the CX in Days Gone, the CX is a clear a winner for this game compared to the Aorus FV43U.

Sorry I did not take any ingame photos of Horizon Zero Dawn for comparison when I should have since that was where the FV43U did shine. Maybe I will do this later.

But to summarise so far:

FV43U
- better brightness, bright HDR games will look really nice, although the CX still looks good in bright HDR games too.

CX48
- much better motion
- feel snappier, less input lag, smoother
- slightly more vibrant, colors and detail can pop in certain games
- much better black levels, no contest here. Some people say their FV43U looks like it has perfect blacks, I can tell you rite now side-by-side with the CX, the CX is far superior. Hence darker games will look much better.

I only tested these 2 games, later I will try several more HDR games to compare and report back, until then I am unsure which of these 2 I will keep, but I am slightly edging towards the CX because of its quicker response and input. Maybe I need to update the firmware on the Aorus or something but the input lag is annoying too much for me, is there any other way I can lower it?
I think you should use either the smart or balanced overdrive setting as the speed setting causes more noticeable ghosting. I also need to try more games to test input lag, but it didn't feel unresponsive at all while playing black ops cold war. Also, what picture settings are you using?
 
Local dimming isn't doing much other than turning off the 4 zones in the corner in that test cross image. The TV only has 8 zones.

I'm surprised nobody else has tested subtitles especially in HDR content, it's basically unusable since the 4 bottom zones have to flash/light up and dim as subtitles appear and disappear.
I was mainly trying to copy rtings testing so it can be compared to the various monitors that had been reviewed (amateur shots though). The one without local dimming was to see if there's any backlight bleed and with local dimming to see if the test pattern had noticeable blooming around it. I did watch Tokyo Drift that had some subtitles and noticed no blooming around them either, but I will test other movies for that too.
 
LG CX vs Aorus FV43U

Ok, so I did a little bit more testing of HDR games side by side with my LG CX48.

So far I spent about 25mins testing Horizon Zero Dawn, and about an hour in Days Gone in HDR. Here is my opinions so far.

Firstly, ill start with the main positive for this display.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, the Aorus FV43U is about on par if not better looking than the CX48 in terms of HDR image quality, mainly because of it's peak brightness. This FV43U display can get very bright in HDR, the lighting can really bring out detail on alot of the surfaces in the game in Horizon Zero Dawn. Where as on the CX, even though the image quality looks similar, overall it seems a tad more dimm compared to the Aorus. I am unsure if this is the ABL kicking in? But it definitely is no where near as bright as the Aorus in this particular game. But the CX has slightly more color depth, and all the dark areas of the game, shading, shadows etc, stand out more. Ontop of that, the CX felt smoother and quicker to play on, the input was faster, and motion more clear. It feels asif the Aorus definitely has noticeably more input lag than the CX. Which is a shame for me, because I am a very sensitive gamer and such a characteristic is hard to bear with for the Aorus. I did not spend much time in Horizon Zero dawn, but I can conclude that the Aorus FV43U definitely did shine in HDR here. If only the CX could get as bright and stay as bright, then it would be unbeatable. Hard to pick the winner for this game, but I will say the Aorus because the brightness does make for some pretty scenery, where as it is more dimm on the CX.

Next up, is Days Gone HDR. I will start of by saying, because this is a darker, and grim looking game compared to Horizon Zero Dawn, the CX definitely outshines the Aorus FV43U here.

For some reason, the flaws of VA panels can show on this game when compared to the CX OLED. For example, the dark trees in the distant in the image below, look less clear on the Aorus, and the motion is noticeable slower, and I was using the Speed OD setting.

Watching the shadows of the trees and branches in the distant sway from the wind, looked blurry and undesirable on the FV43U, whilst on the CX they are crisp and clear, no motion sickness there. Same when walking inside the semi-dark rooms in this part of the game.

Next up, the color on the CX pops noticeably more than the FV43U on this game. For some reason, the FV43U looks washed out in comparison. Take a look at a comparison below:

The color difference is due to 2 things. The aggressive ABL and the fact that a CX can't hold brightness level worth a damnat over 10%. Take a look at these Rtings measurements:

While the CX can hit 817 nit at 10% it drops to 465 at 25% and a dismal 311 at 50%.

A Sony X90J which can only hit 786 nits at 10% can still get 656 at 25% and 558 at 50%.

The result of those 2 combined is that colors looks more solid/saturated/darker which is why most people bought into the OLED hype as the bright seems brighter and the dark seems darker. But this is not how the scene was composed. What they see is an altered image.

Another example (but really showing my age) is that when you travel and you buy all the postcards in the gift shops, then you walk to the exact same spot under the same weather condition and it doesn't look the same. The postcard will still have better color saturation and tonal detail than what you see with your eyes because it's been tweaked. This is what you get with an OLED. Does it look better? Maybe. Is it accurate? Hell NO!

Don't know if your setup will allow you do this but the easiest way to expose the flaw of an OLED's aggressive ABL and very non linear brightness drop is put your CX by a window (ideally with a view). Take a HDR picture from your phone. Put the picture on the CX and compare it by looking out the window and then to the screen. You'll pretty much notice the same thing as you descripted above and what you saw on the FV is actually closer than what your eyes is seeing out the window. Actually just look outside your window on a sunny day and you'll see that with a bright sky, all the colors can get a little less intense/clear because of the glare hitting your eyes.
