How do I stop my Mom from using her 120 GB SSD for pictures too instead of just Windows and Applications?

Yes the SSD is small and old but it does fine for now. Was bought a long time ago when SSDs were expensive. Yes she will get a new one sooner or later. That or I will get her a new SSD.

So how do I stop my Mom from using her 120 GB SSD for pictures too instead of just Windows and Applications? I told her but what the best and easiest way to prevent it? She likes to put the pictures in folders on the desktop. The picture drive is the second hard drive D: drive but of course it is only a SATA drive. Still works well.

Yes the pc is pretty old so a M2 SSD is not supported. :( Heck it is a Intel i5 2500k so yes kinda old.

The only idea I can come up with is change the location of windows desktop to the second SATA Drive D: drive. Is that possible ? How ?

Right now 70 GB out of 120 GB is being used on the SSD. It is kinda notable too.

Yes I told her not to use C for photos. Anyway if the drive was 1 TB I wouldn't really care. I am just trying to prevent her SSD drive from getting full and slowing down the whole system.

The primary reason to keep them separate is if there is any issue with the OS, hardware, malware, viruses, etc ... it is increasingly difficult to save/recover.

you can asign a different drive to user folders, but if it doesn’t have a slot, you can look into one of the mini flash drives.

Make a directory on the drive you want the pictures. Make a shortcut on the Desktop for that directory. Don't tell your mom what drive that shortcut links to but tell her to put the pictures in the "directory" which is is actually a shortcut to the other drive.

do that^^ or if she uses the default windows folder you can change its location. you can change the location for all of the main folders when you open file explorer.

I suggest to change the location of the Desktop folder, by going to the user folder in C:\Users and right-clicking on Desktop, choosing Properties, and then clicking Move...

You can also move the entire user folder, but this will reduce performance for applications that store lots of files in there (such as web browsers).

This many users will use the premade shortcut for everything, like desktop, download, pictures, documents that most application will by default propose, if you move all of those on the wanted drive it will be seemless.

You can make a symbolic link from any folder onto a separate drive.

I did this for my Downloads folder, but it should work with the Desktop.

You shouldn't stop her. You let her fill up the C drive until she starts getting errors, and then she will most likely want a new PC. You help her get setup with a new one, and then she gifts you the one she has now. You then wipe the drives and enjoy or part out and sell.

Nah, I'm just kidding. Be a good kid and buy her a 1TB SSD for $100.

Buy her an external drive for her pictures is an option, keep it safe and portable. Now if really scrapped, use OneDrive for those pictures for free. up to 1TB, create personal vault for added security. As for security concerns with One Drive:
