Crucial MX500 2TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD $184.99

Not a bad price. I've been trying to decide if it is worth it to grab a MX500 2TB or if its worth it to pay a little more for the Samsung 860 EVO or 870 EVO. At time of writing an 870 EVO is about $210.
 
I am a little out of the loop, I have not followed things closely but IIRC yes, the Crucial is better. Old but proven, outperforms the Blue but theyre both pretty close. If nothing else I think the Crucial still has a 5 year warranty vs 3 for the Blue.
 
Crucial’s warranty process for SSDs is also far and away easier than Samsung’s.

I don’t like how VMware handles ssd, but one of the things you should always check is that it recognize it’s actually a “flash disk” and not an old spinner.

it’s usually pretty good about detecting the type of drive on passthrough, but if you’re using some kind of HBA or RAID device it usually just defaults to HDD type.

you can change it in the host settings by looking at storage devices config (underlying storage devices, not datastores).

If it’s set to flash disk it changes reclamation algorithms and should help extend ssd life.

I have used normal consumer SSD's in my home labs for years and not had one die yet. Now if you are using consumer SSD's in a production environment, that can be your first mistake, especially if is immensely busy and has a lot of writes. Sure you can save money, and most of the time you can likely get away with it, and if you have a cluster 1 drive dyeing who cares, replace it and move on, but it can add a lot of over head vs consumer users.

Yeah, I finally got around to replacing my HTPC 128GB Crucial m4 with a 1tb mx500, and it's much faster!

I'm still waiting for video cards to appear at sub-$300 mark (so I can update my ancient GTX 960 to the currently-in-gaming-machie GTX 1060! But thanks to the big SSD, I finally have space for Horizon!
