Can't make up my mind. I was leaning toward getting the newer 5800X, but then started reading about all the hot temp problems. It's got me worried. I don't game, though I do some video editing, and a little 3-D work. I need 8 cores but don't really need 12 cores. I'd get the 5900X to avoid getting a bad 5800X chip, but here in Canada, that's $750. a bit out of my budget.

The 3800XT is a pretty good deal right now (and available), but ~20% slower than the 5800X. I am building a new (AMD) system and don't want to upgrade the CPU again for a good 7 years or so.

I just can't make up my mind.

video and 3d, get the 3900x or xt, should be cheaper than the 5800x

Forget about both as the person above said. Especially if you want to keep it for 7 or so years. Go with a 3900X with 12 cores that's both faster and cheaper than a 5800X for video editing and other productivity tasks.

I owned both a 3800Xt and 5800X in the last month ,not much real different in them. 3800XT was $600 Cad and 5800X was $700 Cad
Canada Computers has a deal on 9900K with Z390 bundles for under $600 Canadian. Intel tying to get rid of there stuff. 9900K usually goes for over $600 in Canada or use to.

Too late for me to switch to Intel now. I already have a AMD motherboard (X470 Tai Chi) and almost all other components.

Is the 3900X really faster than a 5800X ?

I have never owned a 3900X .I have owned 2600X/3600X/3600XT/3800X/3800XT/5800X they are all the same for 4K PC gaming.
You want to do video work,do all the work on GPU and get what you want .I do video work on GPU and it is faster than CPU.

Faster... that depends on what you're doing. Users looking at a 12 core chip like myself are doing a lot of multi tasking. Single thread wise ie. more gaming oriented a 5800x is as fast as it gets on AMD, so pick your poison. More gaming focused get the 5800x. More productivity/media focused the 3900x.

Interesting. I hadn't thought of that. So spend a bit more on the video card, less on the CPU, and get Davinci Resolve?

If your workload can all be done on GPU then that is the way to go. Look up benchmarks just do not take my word for it. Davinci Resolve is an awesome free program, you may have to pay for hardware acceleration ,not sure about that..
JMO others may be different.

5800X and Noctua D15s .. no since in leaving 20% on the table. I have a 3800X w/ D15 and would recommend the cooler on either one you choose just to keep the temps down so you can get better boost clocks. ever since i got the D15 every core but one boosts to 4550 and the last one hits ~4440 (if i remember correctly)

dude, you're not gonna get the same gaming performance on a 2600X as you will on a 5800X. what are you even talking about? apples and oranges? maybe on a 560ti from 10yrs ago where you're gpu limited...

at 4k with a sub $500 videocard, performance at 4k is proably going to be the same.

If you don't game at all and are only doing editing, then buying a 3900x makes a lot of sense depending on pricing in your area, but if you're thinking about doing a mixed workload I would go with a current gen ryzen CPU.

I wouldn't be scared off by the high temps on a 5800x, but you do need to be cautious of:
1.) more power going to each chiplet than in the other ryzen CPUs, so applying thermal paste incorrectly causing a large impact
2.) apparently some water cooling setups can have issues cooling all chiplets evenly
3.) potentially undervolting & modifying fan profiles to keep it cool

I have a 5800x and while I do have high temps, updating my fan profile and opening my case has helped a lot, and I plan on repasting the CPU later on and probably undervolting as well. I was sitting at about 80C in games, sometimes going to 90-92C, but opening the case and modifying my fan profile has brought temps down to 67C. I definitely wouldn't want to run this CPU on a marginal cooler though. It's a weird scenario because it's near the bottom of the ryzen line-up but runs hot compared to the rest so I think that's just surprising people.

I was afraid of 5800x temps as well. I have Coolermaster NR600 case with EVGA CLC 240mm aio. My Metro Exodus temps sit around 58c or so according to MSI Afterburner using the hwinfo dll for temperature sourcing.

that aint bad. believe that's what i'm seeing on my 3800X / D15s combo. like i said just get a good cooler... good 240/280 liquid (or preferably custom) or Noctua D15 or equivalent and you'll be straight.

check "Hardware Scientist" youtube for lots of good info on coolers and fans.

Thanks. That's the exact cooler I have, the Noctua D15s. I'm still worried about 5800X temps however. So I am thinking about maybe going with a 3800XT and getting a slightly higher end GPU. It would be nice to have the extra performance and L3 cache on the 5800X though. In any case, I'm probably going to wait to get a CPU until July or August when prices have hopefully settled down. Maybe AMD will address the high temps with a bios fix for the 5800X by then as well.

well temps on the 5800X are always gonna be a little higher than the 5600 & 5900 because it's using only one CCX with all 8 cores enabled vs 5600 which is using one ccx w/ 2 cores disabled. same w/ 5900 which is using 2 ccx's both with 2 cores disabled. so it's just the way it's gonna go and will require good cooling.

but you never know maybe after they've been out for a bit the may find a way to refine the manufacturing process and get better thermals/performance? ...you know how it goes. You'll still be happy either way and still have a better processor than the new consoles. ;)
