YouTube will put ads on non-partner videos but won’t pay the creators

YouTube said in an update to its terms of service Wednesday that it has the “right to monetize” all content on its platform. As such, it will start putting ads on videos from channels not in its YouTube Partner Program, which shares ad revenue with creators.

The move comes after Google reported a particularly strong third quarter for YouTube, which saw ad growth at $5.04 billion, up 32% from a year ago. It’s likely to increase revenues and margins for YouTube, but is sure to rankle creators who aren’t eligible to make money on the platform.

According to an update to its terms of service Wednesday, YouTube claims the “right to monetize” all content on its platform.
Channels of any size from now on may see ads run on their videos as long as they meet its “Advertiser-Friendly Guidelines.” That means videos will have to meet basic standards to minimize content like inappropriate language, hateful material, or adult content, among other restrictions.

YouTube says all videos with ads will still have to meet brand safety standards as determined by the Global Alliance for Responsible Media. The company said brand-safe content is identified using a combination of machine and human intelligence, and that ad suitability is reviewed at the video level instead of by channel. It also said advertisers can decide not to appear on those videos outside of the program if they wish.

It's sure slimy but it's their platform.

However with an adblocker you can skip them anyway.

That Global Alliance for Responsible Media sounds like the "Ministry of Truth" to me.

Ironically, streaming media is becoming just as full of ads of the broadcast media it has been working to supplant.
Worse. YouTube has ads at the beginning, every couple of minutes and at the end. Most can’t be skipped. I watched a 5 minute video once that probably had 5+ ads in it. It feels like every time I watch something or go online there’s just a bunch of ads being shoved down my throat.

So let me get this straight:
A couple years ago they de-monetized me because I didn't get enough traffic and subscribers. Now they are going to slap their ads on my content and not share any revenue?
might be time to delete my content.

I don't mind a "skip this Ad in 10 seconds" kind of thing....nor do I mind those short ones that you cant' skip, you know like O'Reiley Auto Parts on the automotive channels, etc......cuz you know, life, gotta give a little bit. But the minute I see something 30+ seconds unskippable, I Nope Out immediately. Tried watching actual Cable TV recently and holy crap.....its impossible to focus on anything you're watching when you get interrupted every 7 to 10 minutes....whats the norm now, 41 minutes of show, 19 minutes of ads or something.....

on topic: Sucks for creators but its the price you pay for "upload whatever you want and reach the entire world"......and I completely agree with the above reply, if they slap ads on your stuff but they wont share revenue...its middle finger time.

Like what device ?
iPhone and TV. I’ve been using my Tab S6 with YouTube Vanced for the most part, but I don’t always have that with me. I can’t remember the last time I used a laptop/desktop to watch YouTube.

I don't mind ads which finish after a minute or so.

But lately there has been a surge of "ads" which are actually 10 minutes or more videos of people talking in circles over and over about a product. You can't let a video podcast or music album or something run, and do something else across the room, uninterrupted. These super long "ads" come on and you have to walk over and manually skip them. Such a PITA.

For desktop browsing, uBlock Origin and NoScript will cure what ails ya. You can whitelist any sites you want (friendly/frequently visited), and everything else will stay locked down until you select otherwise. Haven't seen a Youtube ad on PC in a long time.

From YouTube’s perspective this is pretty smart. When a non partner channel goes viral, they will manually review the video and channel real quick, then slap ads on the viral video for that sweet revenue.

Plus YT is continually working on tools to automatically identify improper channels. The eventual goal of removing the human review needed monetizing non partner channels.

YouTube has ads?

Does anything have ads these days?

This and the continuous subscribe-to-Youtube-music interruption crap several times a day.

It's been free to watch for what, 12 or 13 years? Lost money for at least the first 5 or more years.

Them monetizing anything they can makes business sense. Just not sure why they wouldn't share at least some small portion with the creator. Granted, there is also a lot of trash on there...

Wished this would work on the Roku platform. DNS ad blocking on Youtube doesn't work consistently / effictively. I'm currently running Diversion / Pixelserv via my Asus router. uBlock Origin is a god send for my PC though.

Enlighten taco with free alternatives.

The sun of freedom is setting. Soon darkness will cover the earth nd android robots will March across the globe. Ad blocker will be slain forever nd ads will broadcast through 5g network into human brains implanted with microchips.
bitchute is about it, for now...

I thought they were already doing this. Not that I see ads on youtube. That would be the end of me watching youtube at all.

I spend countless of hours of promoting especially newcomer producers (I even give them feedback and help with mixing & mastering, also for free) and also established producers and get nothing in return (because I have too much copyright content on my channel so cannot turn adsense on therefore, they changed policies a couple of years ago in case you had too much copyrighted stuff on the channel you became ineligible for monetization), now they want to leech money off me too.

This feels like the old Soviet Russia when even the poor farmers weren't spared by the government.

People still watch Youtube?
3-4 hours a day, maybe even as much as 10. It's a constant background stream.
I mostly watch tutorials, reviews and educational content relating to my hobbies. I've learned far more than youtube than most other sources due to ease of use.

I'm watching something about different types of Rainbow fish and how to breed them (which are compatible subspecies, etc.) At this very moment.

I've been paying for Youtube since it was YouTube Red and I've gotten more out of that $8 a month than literally every single other streaming service and television network combined.

I disagree YouTube is mostly garbage.

I do very much the same. I get most of my educational content (outside of book work for my profession) from watching videos. Over the last 18 months or so it has also taught me how to inline skate more specifically it has helped me learn how to slow down and stop so I don't seriously injure my 48 year old body - still need a 20+ MPH stop but it's work in progress. It's not always easy replicating the experts in the hardest techniques, no matter how they break down the movement. I have also started getting back into electronics projects.

With all of this said, I do get annoyed at some of the advertising. I will never ever need to purchase Grammarly. Also the US election stuff was horribly annoying especially since I had voted weeks before the election. I wish there was a don't send me this Ad again.

Doesn’t work on all my devices.
yeah i didn't feel like adding any plugins to my main browser Vivaldi, plus i feel bad about the sites that don't have intrusive ads, but I did try OperaGX and it skips them by default so i sometimes use it for youtube sessions, but there's a few things i just have to have my way and that's why i use vivaldi. (devs are the creators of the original opera before they sold out to just another chrome clone)
