Good job AMD. But now youre about to get wrecked by the 3080. GG.

Isn't the super a bit more expensive? The 5700 series was a decent step forward, hopefully RDNA2 makes them reasonably competitive again. I liked my RX 5700, played RDR 2 on it at 1440p like a champ.

Fingers crossed. The 5700xt is actually impressively fast for its die size, wonder why AMD didn't just release navi with more CU's and faster memory, unless it doesn't scale well. Doesn't make sense.
I don't think the power efficiency was good enough for them to do it. Even if they were able to tape out such a chip. Which I also don't think they could. Recent APUs, mobile chips, and general reports suggest that they have now refined things a lot on the power requirements and the process, in general.

Interesting that the 5700XT performance compared to the 2070 Super came up, did the 2070 Super get slower or did the 5700XT become faster? Or both?

If past articles from [H] are any indication: Nivida tends to deliver 100% performance on day one. Save for a couple of games throughout the lifecycle. (often games where AMD is particularly strong).

AMD does indeed seem to improve slowly, over time. And if you compare the late drivers to day 1, you will see a pretty good difference.

However, those are past articles. And I feel like it is more common for individual driver updates from both teams, to post 2-10% performance improvements in various games, over the life cycle. and I think that is partially due to games becoming ever more complex. And also games with poor launch code. (RDR2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Control, etc).

HUB started using the 3950x system, so AMD may have picked up a few percent while the nvidia card saw no change.

I would have gone for the 5700XT but the usual bad drivers and issues meant spending more time getting it to work rather than just enjoying it. I got the 2070 Super and it just works. Only 2 games take it to the ground RN, Space Engineers during large battles and Dual Universe at the main start areas with hundreds of ships. Otherwise, it doesn't break a sweat. I might grab a 5700 XT though and toss it into my old FX setup :p as well as another 2070 Super for my other Franken builds (since 3000 series dropped prices of the old cards).

Feels like your old FX setup will be the bottleneck as it cannot fully take advantage of the 5700 XT. Have you considered upgrading it to a 3300X?

The 3300x was a paper launch as well. I've had nowinstock alerts setup for 5 months and I still haven't been able to buy one.

A lot people are very pleased with the 3100 according to reviews on newegg about the cpu .

Wow, I didn't realize it is unavailable to this day. You are not joking about being a paper launch.

Well its not like they can add CUs willy nilly.
They would have to design an entirely new chip with more CUs in it.

The 5700XT and 2070 Super have always traded blows going by the benchmarks I've seen since they launched. Still, the 5700XT is a great value especially if you don't care about ray tracing.

In AMD optimized titles is sizzles. With ALL next gen gaming being developed on AMD consoles, This should bode well for 'bigger' navi.

Finally? It's been within a few % since it launched. Its more power efficient and a much smaller die. The lack of RT was a turn off for some, but for others it was a great deal. It's better at compute as well, not that's of interest to the majority. It's just all the nvidia marketing and fan boys would never admit that AMD had a pretty solid product. If they don't own the halo product they aren't competing is what people tend to say/think. I think AMD competes well where they compete, hopefully this cycle they can compete the next stack up, which is pretty much the high end for gaming. It appears 3090 is only around 10% faster than 3080 in gaming, so not a huge difference. These leaves plenty of room to compete on price/performance. The unknowns are still RT performance and DLSS competitor (hopefully something using direct ML that is open, unlike Nvidias proprietary.. well, everything just about).

I will be really nice to pick up a cheap 5700 XT once the next Navi and the 3060 launches.

I want to see the 5700xt replacement card and if they can keep the pricing close to the same. Using a 2080 super right now but if I can get a big performance gain around $500 I'll give it a try

That "argument" has been used for years...yet never come true.

The 5700 XT is a decent card but it was ruined by months and months of black screen problems. Since they fixed the issue the 5700 XT is finally an ok card, but, still is lacking going forward. For a company that was so invested in consoles, it's amazing that the 5700XT doesn't have any support for Dx12 Ultimate. The 2070 super cards don't have black screen issues. What they do have is RT support, DLSS support and also full support for all the DX12 Ultimate features.

The 5700XT is probably less power efficient than the 2070 Super. It's on a smaller die(7nm) but still uses the same power as the 2070 Super(12nm)

I don't think the 5700XT is better at compute either. The only benchmarks I can find with compute are from Anandtech and they have the 2070Super well ahead.

There is a reason Nvidia works so hard to have the Halo product. It does affect people's purchasing decision. People want to be associated with best, fastest etc. You say AMD are competing well where they are competing? How is Nvidia having 80% of the discrete GPU market share competing well?

If AMD want to get back into the discrete GPU market, they will have to do like they did with Ryzen. Release good GPUs consistently for a couple of generations. No bad launches and no arriving a year late and no driver problems. And, like it or not, they will have to be competitive at the high end, maybe not at first, but that's what they should be aiming for.

It starts with RDNA 2. It has to be good. And when they follow up with RDNA 3 or whatever, that has to be better. Consistency is key.

It was less power hungry by a little bit (going from memory) but nothing a normal desktop user would notice or care. Their drivers are a let down sometimes, while the majority of users have no issues there is still a large # of users that do, which obviously is not great.

They are competing well as in their $/perf is inline or better than Nvidia. Competing well and being a market leader are not equal, so please take what I said to mean they are in line with these metrics.

Compute, I guess the only one I've really ever noticed or heard much about was mining, so I should have probably just said that instead of compute, and they are much faster at it. That doesn't help the average user or gamer and is the reason AMD cards sold out so quickly during the mining craze. That doesn't translate into being useful for most work loads, but does show it's got strong compute (at least in specific and optimized work). Again, this doesn't necessarily translate to all work loads of course.

I'm not delusional, AMD is not where they are with CPUs but I'm hoping they continue to close this gap and catch up. They need less drama for their release drivers if they want to be taken seriously, although it's funny I already saw a few 3080 black screen issues popping up and a lot of them getting moderated by nvidia staff on r/nvidia ;). Tis the problem of Nvidia running thier own sub on reddit while AMD is user driven. Nvidia can delete comments and merge complaints; so r/AMD vs r/nvidia can make one look like there are less issues than the other (which to be honest, there are less issues, but they can moderate it further to make the gap look bigger).

As for Nvidia monitor black screens, cables have a significant role on this. Even my 1080Ti would black screen with a faulty cable. As for drivers, I frankly hate the Nvidia user interface which is rarely used since it lacks the features I use most, OCing (per game!), much better settings options with AMD per game, AMD link which is rather powerful for fine tuning while in game as well as video recording on and off, image taking. As for issues, Nvidia has less significant ones in the last 3 years which is a good consideration. Each have strengths and weaknesses, AMD lower end was a let down, the 5500 and 5600 could have been kicked ass cards if prices about $50 cheaper or at least $40 cheaper. 5700XT was a very good card for the $, hindered by drivers for some. As for RT features for the 2060 and even the 2070Super, :ROFLMAO:, virtually useless, DLSS and Tensor cores pretty damn good.

my blower style ASRock 5700XT has been stellar from day one .. I wish AMD had a Nvidia Highlights equivalent though .. That's the only thing I miss switching from a GTX 1080.

Nvidia has some excellent cards that we, the little people, will actually get our hands on some day .. I can't wait to see what AMD brings to the table and .. hopefully .. they'll actually be available at launch.

...and ... hopefully ... my case is big enough to hold one or the other. :cautious:
