Linus from Linus Tech to Possibly Retire

It's great that Linus has done so well. I remember watching his Logitech G13 video and thinking this kid is just hanging out in his living room making youtube unboxing videos, hell I could do that. And yeah, look at him now.

This is really funny to watch after hearing the story he told in the OP about how everyone called him a faggot all throughout his school career. Looks like he hadn't learned his lesson yet even by 2009 with that blonde hair and backwards cap :D

Linus often has some sparks of brilliance, but he always falls back to either extreme shilling, playing to his young demographic, or both. If he took videos more seriously I may have actually watched them more regularly.

Sounds like he needs to take the pressure on himself down a few notches, let his employees take more of the load, and just enjoy his success and get back to doing what he loves doing.....

I just got into his channel in the past year or so and have really enjoyed his videos. Without him, his channel could probably 'survive', but really he's the main reason I (and I assume millions of others) still watch. Dude's been living home techie dream that very few could ever accomplish.

To the people complaining about a completely skippable ad in the beginning and end of each video... get over yourself.

Wish him the best!

He's the OG of social media PC influencers, so it's hard not to respect him.

But I'm sick of influencers in general. It's just bragging now. So, meh. Stay, go. Whatever.

I always dug his "extra" type videos. The server room rebuilds, the data loss recovery, etc. He's goofy but I never felt like I was being lied to. Always seemed up front about sponsors and didn't seem to have an issue with calling a duck a duck.

more hype to his channel, publicity

doubtful on PR stunt, but who knows, if intentional sure is effective i bet

:drama: :drama: :drama:
"I'm retiring just kidding" is just the latest YouTuber meta. Pewdiepie did it a few weeks ago but he wasn't the first. Everyone with a decent size channel is running this gimmick. Idiocy always comes in waves.

I'm not a fan of Pewdiepie but I'm going to have to defend him here. He just said he was going to take a break for a couple of months and then the idiots in the media went wild with clickbait articles. Pewds did nothing wrong.

Maybe I'm missing something here but... why does anyone on this site care? If you're [H]ard you passed the "LTT" level a LONG time ago.

He's got a purpose, but that purpose is mostly teaching fortnite players which mouse his sponsor told him to promote. I've watched a handful of his videos and EVERY time I was left thinking that he really doesn't really know what he's talking about - not saying he's talking BS, just feels like he's probably got staff who know what they're talking about (and who told him what to say) but HE isn't talking like he understands it. Like someone working at Best Buy - they've been told by Monster how to sell that cable, but it just rings false in the store.

:(

UFD Tech is a real tough one cause he said good bye in title, but he's got that major situation with his Son

way more sympathetic for UFD Tech than Linus being uncomfortable at the top of his game

i tried participating in LTT forums, and discord

you're completely correct. LTT is signficantly more mainstream and basically unrelatable to me. those people are cringey to me. it's like the fortnite of the tech community IMHO

Same diff. Taking a break, not taking a break,
the circlejerking end result is the same. Dude is savvy enough to know it would cause overreaction for clicks.

they treat Linus like some prophet at times to be honest...

i @'d him once on discord and everyone was like "gasp" is that allowed???

What is he supposed to do? Just up and disappear for two months without saying anything and leave his millions of fans wondering what happened? That would be a bigger shitstorm and you'd probably accuse him of something stupid for doing that too

Wait... explain to me how the video title "I've been thinking of retiring" is what he's "supposed to do" when he's taking a vacation... I mean I'm really struggling here - what else could he have done?! And don't give me some obvious answer like drop a video with the title "I'm going on vacation - see you in 2 months"... that would just be... logical?

What PR stunt or hype? The video title is completely honest. He has thought about retiring and he explains why in the video and what he's currently feeling. The only people who thought he was retiring were the people that didn't actually watch the video and instantly jumped to conclusions. If you, you know, WATCH THE VIDEO you can see why it's titled as such and it makes it pretty clear that there's no act or anything being put on. It's very real, very raw, emotion.

please read carefully

i very clearly articulated that "doubtful", plus why sohuld we be sympathetic for an individual who's clearly successful? he's not dealing with a situation anywhere near the gravity of UFD Tech with his Son's profound illness. i'm not at all sympathetic for Linus getting emotional. That helps nobody

"Someone else has it worse" is a shit take, it has always been a shit take, and always will be a shit take. Humans are totally capable of feeling sympathy for more than one person at a time, even when their situations are wildly different.

This thread and those like it just make me realize what a waste of time this kind of low-qual news even is to spend any time and energy deliberating.

It's a new decade, gents. This stuff is fun and addictive but gotta limit.

You didn't read the thread dude. We were talking about Pewdiepie there. Not Linus.

That was a long video that amounted to rambling, Linus does this type of thing at times. He should learn to have better PR in this particular aspect imo. This industry (as mentioned above) overreacts to everything.

All he needed to do was post a 5 min video stating clear goals and intent. I’m not watching someone ramble for half an hour trying to figure out what they want to say.

i'll believe it when it happens.. he did a stream talking about it last year and the year before that and surprise, he hasn't given Alex, Anthony, or James any more solo video's then what they've always done every year.. why? because their sponsors refuse to sponsor video's that linus isn't in and until he tells them to piss off or deal with who ever is making the video nothing will change.

i mostly watch LTT for the ridiculous stuff they do, like watercooling a red 8k camera, or randomly water cooling network switches and shit. the actual useful tech related things i don't bother with since there's way better options out there. although spend a day in their discord and you definitely start to understand what their viewer base is.. it's mind boggling how dumb people really.. like "what's this plug coming from the power supply", even though it says what it is on the 8 pin pcie plug..

You're expecting a guy that is clearly in a very emotional state to make clear, concise, and logical choices in an off the cuff livestream?

Linus talked about that (sort of) in this stream as well. Basically saying that he kept working long hours and doing everything, despite promising his wife he'd reduce his hours, because he kept making up excuses to do so. Made a comparison to the reasons Walter White goes through in Breaking Bad. Hopefully he can step back a bit this time. His kids are at an age where its good for him to be around more often instead of always working.

it is good to see some positive things here with Linus bidding in GN's charity auction mentioned at the start of this video @

Yes, he runs a business not a reaction channel. At 10 million subscribers with the hundreds of sponsors, business partners, etc. releasing off the cuff rambling/emotional videos about retirement, time off, etc. needs to be handled with some care.

It was obviously done wrong if 80% of the customer base/viewership thought he was retiring. He has been very careful in other aspects like the multiple you tubers whom got caught up in whatever the latest outrage that happened.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t post personal videos thanking everyone like he tried to do here in general. But the messaging was terribly muddled along iirc the title.

Half the stuff he talks about he honestly doesn't have a clue on. This is very apparent when he starts getting into the enterprise world of equipment.

It really wasn't though. He was pretty clear. The problem is people didn't watch the whole video. That's not really his fault.

It doesn’t take that long to establish his points, which is why I said a 5 min video would have been more than fine. All the more reason to keep it short and too the point.

I wouldn't say half, but there is definitely a lot he doesn't know. Though it's less him talking and more his writing team not doing proper research when making the scripts. They need some more people with non-consumer experience and knowledge on the writing staff. Anthony is great, but his skill set is mostly Linux and IT. Outside of that everyone is either pretty much new to the tech world or has limited knowledge outside of the consumer sector.
