New games with choice of servers/ sense of community?

So games like CS, World in Conflict, MW, Battlefield 4 (I don't know about 5), etc. you could actually join servers that you wanted to. I met 2 of my best friends 20 years ago playing CS in the same servers regularly. I even flew to another country to attend one of their weddings. But today's games feel like being in line at a hospital. They lack soul, they lack community. You can't go back to the same server, see regular "faces". There is no Cheers mentality to it. It's honestly terrible if you ask me that kids don't get to enjoy camaraderie or make friends. If you look at CS:GO or COD MW right now you select a game mode, then it sends you wherever. You play with people you might not ever play with again.

What modern games let people select servers or even have a good sense of community right now?

If you ask me, these companies should let people create servers (on the companies servers) and choose game modes, maps, etc not just private matches. If they aren't being used okay boom disappear from the list. I can't imagine it would cost much to implement something like this.

Yeah I dont know what to say I never had a game outside of Ultima Online DAOC or Left for Dead that had a good sense of community. That is what Steam friends list is for basically but even then I dont play with them much. The last good game to play co-OP was Hunt Showdown. Also met alot of people playing Duke Nukem Forever.

Patheon Rise of the fallen shows some promise

Unfortunately the trend toward lobby/matchmaking (thanks consoles) is eliminating community based gaming. BFV doesn't have real private servers and neither did BF1, BF4 was the last real BF game for that reason and it sucks. I don't play MMO's but I'd expect they would still be community based, all FPS is moving away from it for stupid matchmaking, even CSGO outside of leagues.

Can't speak on Classic, but World of Warcraft retail has some if you actively look. With FPS games you're sort of out of luck. I had been playing MW and stumbled across two...kids. They were fine I guess. We'd join matches together. They were far better than I, and I'd just get curb stomped every round. Years back I was playing BF3(?) and would always join the same server. Got into a nightly routine for several months. We all knew each other and had a bunch of laughs. That wasn't too bad.

State of the games right now are hurry up and go-go-go. Instant gratification and all that. No sense of accomplishment. Hurry up and get your unlocks so the company can release a new set of DLC for you to purchase. Kinda sucks.

Killing Floor 2.
Unreal Tournament

Two that I can think of off the top of my head that have community run/driven servers you can selectively join.

Also met alot of people playing Duke Nukem Forever.

Ha, there were so few people playing that game, so we kind of made an impression on each other. Horrible net code, though. Loved duels / 2v2 on Morningwood.

You can still choose custom servers in csgo.

I frequently do for 1v1 practice and see the same faces.

The "community" these days is in the Discord server of the group you play games with these days, not necessarily just inside one specific game/server. Honestly, its better this way. Today, if you met people you liked playing with as they were always in a specific dedicated server you'd join, wouldn't you maybe want to play other things with them? Talk about random stuff outside of the game? Discord is a great place for that.

Natural Selection 2 (a bit on the older side of modern, but still) is the only game I currently play that has this feature, I do like how the server browser is the only way to find games too, no matchmaking of any kind. Reminds me of the CS 1.5/1.6/Source days where there were only ever 3-4 servers I'd regularly join and knew almost everyone in it each time. NS2 certainly has that small and tightly knit community if that's what you're looking for.

probably the best game i've played with a good community supporting it is deep rock galactic.. like any game you'll have toxic people but for the most part the toxic/high ego people tend to play with each other and don't really bother the rest of the player base. but it's not a game for everyone since it's co-op pve based which i personally didn't think i'd like since that's usually not my cup of tea but ended up staying with the game because of the community. most fun i've had in gaming since probably RTCW:ET.

also agree with criccio, discord is the easiest way to find a good group of people to play with since a lot more games are creating their own official discord servers these days.
