GPU clock confusion

Got a new 5700 and its advertised at boost clock of 1750 but is very frequently going well over 1900 according to adrenaline and GPUZ. Is this just normal for these? I try to google it but just come up with a thousand threads about overclocking or flashing it to an XT.
 
I would say that is above average, seems like you got a good chip. What card is it?
 
Xfx rx5700 dd ultra. Got it for $300 on Amazon.

So it's normal? Its just overclocking itself with stock settings?

nothing to be concerned about for sure.....i think its possible the driver doesn't report the clock speed 100% correct all the time. (hardware is still kinda new) Sounds like its performing pretty good anyways.....i would guess it matches results fpsreview and what not gets?

I am concerned about it, my system is pretty unstable since I bought it. Gpuz is showing the same clock speeds.

I do not think it's reporting incorrectly, if I manually set the max boost clock speed to the advertised amounts that's what it shows. And my system is 100% stable.

When I open up the overclocking in adrenalin the default is showing 1960 max boost with voltage over 1100. That's what it actually seems to be running at with everything set to default.

Is my card overclocking itself or is this adrenalin?
 
Not sure but I would flash it to an XT and it will get a little extra voltage. Just save your old bios to revert. The card has a dual Bios switch so I would try it for sure.

What sort of instability problems are you experiencing?

Crashes? Artifacts?
 
Maybe the bios xfx has on there is way too aggressive. Perhaps they don't use a reference bios.
 
What PSU are you using? If the boost is causing instability it could be pulling more currant than your PSU can deliver (something not happening at stock).
 
Those may not be accurately reporting clock speeds. Try HWINFO64 or AMD's software included with the drivers.

I already said im using adrenalin and gpuZ to monitor this and manually setting a clock speed reflects correctly on both programs.

My PSU is fine. What do you mean something not happening at stock. To be 100% clear here i am NOT overclocking this thing intentionally. I just got it and it seems to be aggressively overclocking itself.
 
for what its worth...i had an xfx card a while back that all of a sudden became unstable for a few months...once i got to looking into it i released the drivers were under volting the gpu voltage for a few versions. I got around it by simply boosting the gpu voltage to what it should have been or using older drivers. So it does and can happen so you could be on to something...afterburner should be able to correct it or if need be get with https://hardforum.com/members/xfxsupport.143946/ and send him a pm so it with email him.

You indicate instability when past 'advertised boost clocks'. It doesn't matter if you are overclocking the card or if the card is overclocking itself. It's possibly pulling more currant than what your PSU can handle. You indicate it's fine (I'll take your word for it) but you would hardly believe the amount of posts on this forum where a user claims 'PSU is fine' and then several days later (after exhausting all other avenues of solution) we see a 'gee guhyz! I changed PSU and all problems are gone!' Thus the question.

You can take it or leave it, but you're the one asking for help.

Is afterburner playing nice with these cards now? That would really be nice, its what i have used for years. I uninstalled it after reading all the trouble people had with it in the early days.

At no point have i asked for any troubleshooting help with my stability.

All i have asked 3 times now is whether or not its normal for these cards to boost beyond their advertised max clock speeds. It seems my card is pretty aggressively overclocking itself and im just trying to find out wtf if anything is going on.

My problems with stability have been at idle and not even in games. My system has hung doing absolutely nothing 3 times now. It has not happened since the new drivers today so we will see on that.



All i am asking is whether or not its normal for this card to be boosting to speeds over 1900mhz at 100% stock settings.

Thats after like 15 minutes in the witcher. Hit 1906mhz and 1.112v

Third column is max readings.
 
XFX DD Ultra here. Just put it in my PC out of curiosity. I have a 1080ti that I will be using and this one will be for sale but so far this one is stable. The really odd thing is its like XFX unlocked the hard limit AMD put on the clocks already. This is performing within 3-5% of an XT already.


Wow this card sags.

OP you do a DDU wipe before switching to your new card?
 
Yes, DDU with the latest drivers in this case. Its stressing right now and temps are honestly not bad either. Junction temp is staying under 100c mem temps are under 90c and noise is acceptable.

That's 100% stock settings for you? It's clocking that high for you on it's own?

My 1070 (in my signature) has an advertised boost clock of somewhere in the 1800s but when the card is cold (i.e. below 60 C) it boosts over 2000 (nothing in my system is overclocked). I don't have an AMD card at present but I presume that both AMD and nVidia only advertise what they know it will hit but not what it can do on its own.

Yeah and unless you make a custom fan curve that's more aggressive it will level out usually in the 1800s depending on how good the stock cooling is.

Yes booted straight out of box. You want a copy of my Vbios just in case?

I let it run some superposition for about an hour and i am baffled. This card is much more stable and cooler running than the reviews suggest and it's running at a nice boost. I need to pull up my old vanilla red devil benches to compare. I might keep this card. It's function is overcoming it's McDonald's plastic cheapness.

That's all I really needed to know. Idk if I just worded it poorly in the OP or none of these guys are bothering to read it but all I have been trying to ask this whole time is if what I'm seeing is normal. I didn't ask for troubleshooting help but boy did I get plenty of it...

What a frustrating experience...

That said, the card is pretty impressive. It's performing far better than expected. I was pretty skeptical because it was dirt cheap and there are pretty much no real reviews of this specific model (there's one but it's not great), on top of that the xt version of this got pretty mediocre reviews. But damn I'm glad I got it.

It really is a monster of a card for what it cost.
