Old Noob Looking for DeathMatch FPS

Hoping maybe someone can offer up some suggestions.

Haven't played multi-player against random folks in years (like late 90s to early 2000s).

Looking for a FPS game that I can just get online with my buddies and frag away. Similar to Duke or Quake back in the day.

I am not interested in climbing some rank ladder, or competing in tournaments, or anything like that. Just want to run around a map with 1 or 2 other players that I invite (old friends) and play.

We have the Duke Nukem 20th Anniversary Edition and that was fun. You can start a game, select the map, and then invite your friends. Recently, however, the connection issues have led to constant disconnects.

So, we tried the free Quake II RTX download on Steam. That is great, and while you can't limit the people who join the servers, it was a lot of old school fun. The maps and servers are a bit limited, though.

Doesn't have to be free at all, just seems that everything I research is all about different game types, team play, leader boards, clan and/or tournament play that we are not interested in.

Anything like that?

Thank you in advance for any input.

Quake Champions is fun. Haven't played it in awhile so I don't know if it has much of a community still.

Quake Live on steam still has a community. I still play once in awhile.... Same 100 people something but loyal!

Those kinds of games are dying out because they are hard to monetize and Big VG wants you to buy a new game every year, plus a season pass, quarterly battle pass and weekly loot boxes. Arena shooters that you can just play for fun are bad for the bottom line.

Modern Warfare had decent Deathmatch and similar modes, but ultimately, I found it to not be social. Even if you team up with friends, there isn't much point in most modes.

If you really want some nice team work, I'd recommend Apex Legends. Best team work game since Tribes.

The main issue with Modern Warfare is you get a new lobby after every match. It's impossible to meet people and make new friends because of this. If I were a conspiracy theorists, they're doing this in order to kill off the "toxic community" boogeyman.

Right - that's a big part of it. In BF3/4, I had favorite servers where I knew the rules, the maps and what to expect. You had a core of regulars. It was almost like a nice little restaurant or bar you hang out at if it was a good one.

That's been wiped away and despite the tech and gaming industry always talking about bringing people together, the really only want to bring people together in ways that benefit and profit them because the state of social gaming is horrendous.

I do think there is a market for companies to make smaller scale shooters using off the shelf engines and a scrappy band of coders and artists and go against the grain to give us what we had 10-20 years ago. They don't want us in gaming communities, they want us in their matrix and on their treadmill trying to level up and get cool skins.

It's disgusting.

Goldeneye Source is fun, there aren't as many servers with people playing on them as there used to be but there is a tight community that does still play it. I can always find people playing late at night.

Check it out.

Another vote for quake champions. IMO it's the closest to what you're looking for. Even at that it's more akin to COD than the fragging of old times

Population is dwindling though, might wanna jump on sooner rather than later

This needs to happen, as I would pay for it.
