I'm looking for some games like Half-Life 2, Metro and Deus Ex, which are shooters, but with a deep story and tons of interaction with characters you care about.
I tried Bioshock which is supposedly one of the best fps games out there, but I got very disappointed because it has next to none NPC interaction.

Far Cry series.

Prey maybe, Fallout 3, 4 and new vegas, Outer worlds, You could also look into borderlands although it is more of a looter shooter but there is some story and a ton of excentric chars but it is not for everyone.

Metro Exodus would be perfect. The first two games were more like Half Life 2. Exodus is a bit more open and the dialogue sequences can be longer. Though in all three, the character is silent. I recommend all three, and Exodus is excellent.

I have played most of those games except newer Far Cry games and Prey.
Watched some videos of Prey, not sure if I like it.

I second this. Exodus was really designed as a slower paced deliberate adventure. Once I stopped fighting the game design by trying to speed things up, and started chilling, exporing the worlds, talking to everyone, the game opened up beautifully. Really reconmmend this one, and it will kick your gpu in the babymaker like few others at extreme.

Exodus is a canned alleyway with the illusion of open world. Not a fan. I gave it a fair shake at about six hours play time. Not my cup o’tea. I don’t like feeling like I’m on rails...

Does it have to be a shooter? Sounds more like you want an RPG.

I recommend Witcher 3, best game I’ve ever played. Totally story driven. 36 different endings depending on your choices in the game. But not so open world that you feel lost in a giant sandbox.

Seeing that Witcher 3 is third person and not a shooter that doesn't seem like a good suggestion. But yeah, the map is too big for its own good and it absolutely isn't "totally story driven". It is long winded and has dozens of quests which all require extensive use of eagle vision/eyes. You can find much worse games and Witcher 3 isn't terrible, but it isn't stellar either. And it absolutely won't scratch an FPS itch with its clunky combat gameplay.

I see what you did there. I didn't like Exodus, and you didn't like Witcher 3

Thing is, He is asking for story driven game, and after you play a game like Witcher 3 you realize there is no such thing as a story driven FPS (in comparison)

The most story driven FPS I’ve played is Wolfenstein New Order. Its a great game.

True in general, but FPS games do have a greater emphasis on gameplay. I would argue that Deus Ex Human Revolution had a better story than Witcher 3 though. Witcher 3 was long and drawn out and never amounted to much. Presentation is good, not up to Mass Effect quality though (camera work wasn't as good). It is something that is decent enough to take in for what it is but it never gets you thinking much and it is hard to get attached to the plot or characters. There is a lot of exposition which is great, the issue is it tends to be fairly self contained with lots of it dropped randomly to drag the story along. Especially towards the end.

I would recommend New Order as well. I would also look into Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, and to a lesser extend Call of Duty WWII. Infinite Warfare does a decent job of being a phoned in BSG style plot, whereas WWII is a simple but competent war story. Gameplay in WWII can be a bit lacking but overall holds up well enough. Infinite Warfare is the best CoD campaign to date. I'm playing through the Modern Warfare game as an MP game which I find okay but thought the campaign was trash, so avoid that.

It's an alright game. But if you have played Riddick Escape From Butcher Bay first, you see that any good ideas came from there. So I'd rather recommend that game.

Pretty much what I was thinking when I read OP. 3rd person action/adventure games are where the best stories and character interactions are at; Mass Effect series, Uncharted Series, Enslaved, The Last of Us, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Tomb Raiders, Spider Man, Mad Max, and Yakuza series are all what come to mind for me when I think of strong stories and characters in games. I realize that most of those are Playstation exclusives too, but they simply have the best games in this genre with their exclusives.

Wolfenstein games are definitely one of the better FPS games I've played recently too, just played through TNO and TNC back to back a few month ago for the first time and I thought New Colossus was just as good really, but I know a lot of people didn't care much for it too as a sequel. I just started playing through Old Blood last week too, but haven't got far enough into it to form a good opinion of it yet.

If you have a PS4, the Uncharted series gets my vote. The first 3 games are available in a single HD remaster and you can get 4 + Lost Legacy as a discounted bundle, too.
The Outer Worlds is loosely a shooter, but it leans more in the RPG direction. No further than the Deus Ex games, though.

The Outer Worlds is very much an RPG, but I suppose it is an FPS/RPG hybrid. I'd suggest that as well if you're okay with some RPG elements. You really don't have to scavenge for ammo, but there is lots of NPC interaction and lots of shooting. Combat is good but not great. NPC reactions, animations and whatnot are not very realistic though. Similar to Fallout. There is obviously a lot of it, but it isn't up to par with Deus Ex or Mass Effect. But worth considering. Again it does have some RPG story mechanics but thankfully it is mostly centered around that and a streamlined upgrade/perk system.

you will definitely care about the deep and complex NPC interactions in Diakatana, enough so you might be inclined to write john romero a "thank you" letter after you are done with the game

The very best of the lot hasnt been mentioned yet, Red Dead Redemption 2.
You want gun battles, lol!
The rest of the game is even better.

anyone play mass effect and red read in 1st person? I think that's maybe what the OP is asking for, not 3rd person...

RDR2 has an optional first person view (same as GTA V did). I specifically rebought the game on PC so that I could replay it in first person with a mouse and keyboard.

No one quoted me so I forgot about this thread :)

Anyway, yeah I'm looking exclusively for FPS with great story which is not just a shooter but let's me interact with npcs and build a "bond".

I have played most RPGs like The Witcher, Mass Effects, Outer World, Fallout, etc.

did STALKER have much NPC interaction? I only played the beginning of it, going through that town and whatnot... felt kinda like an RPG almost, like Deus Ex, but my PC at the time couldn't handle it so I gave up after a couple hours of play... seemed fun though

I think that Vampire: Bloodlines is what you’re looking for. It’s a first person shooter role playing game, built on the Source (Half-Life 2) engine. You start in first person and play in first person, but there’s an optional third person view triggered by a key command to make people who wanted third person happy. There’s plenty of combat, with vampire gangs, human gangs, and zombies. Plenty of interaction with NPCs, and depending on how you treat them different story options open or close. Plus you can kill or cut off ties with some NPCs if you really want to, with effects on how your game will progress. So as to not mislead you, the game definitely prefers melee combat, but you can use guns too. It’s also 15 years old at this point, and if you buy on Steam it requires extensive patching. I recommend buying it on GOG, because they patch it for you.
The game is really good, back in my college ‘Arr, we be sailing the seas searching for warez’ days, I actually bought the game on DVD after playing it because it was so good, and I bought it again on GOG last year to do another playthrough. I suggest watching a review or a ‘let’s play’ on YouTube, and if it looks worth it then pick it up on GOG.
