Quantum stuff is getting big

That sounds like a great way to spin "Intel's obsolete process"

At least Intel is being smart in not putting all of its eggs into one basket.
I knew that with their CPU market at risk that they would be breaking into other markets, especially the quantum-computing and AI market segments.

Most likely both a cost-cutting measure, and it gives them a near-future path to 14nm++++ should they choose to continue.
If they started at 14nm++++, they would legit have nowhere to go in the coming year(s) - smart business move, but this is starting to become old hat with them at this point.
