"Cleanest" version of W10?

Sorry if the facts bother you. The vast majority of Windows users are the lowest level users who have no idea what they're doing.

Im still sticking with what I said. Unless the Linux community can stop acting like an exclusive club of insufferable dickheads, that year or Linux dream that’s been tossed around for the last 20 years isn’t going to happen. Especially when people see the Linux community right now and would rather just stay with an operating system they hate than associate with them.

I understand your frustration, but try to maintain perspective. When someone claims to 'be trying Linux' with the deliberate intention of taking a shit on it, which is always obvious - That's equally as frustrating and results in ongoing conflict.

Even your comment re: 20 years is unjustified and frustrating to Linux users.

Peace guys, these are fickle topics not worth getting worked up over.

Behavior has nothing to do with it. Slowly linux is gaining momentum and even Microsoft is increasing its use and buying seats in the open source consortium. Although some say it's Microsofts attempt to infiltrate and destroy.

Microsoft today isn't like the Microsoft of old, I don't think they're interested in destroying what they once classed as a cancer anymore. People may disagree, but I honestly think there's overwhelming evidence that MS are planning on switching to the Linux kernel with a locked down DE similar to Windows 10.

Brian Lunduke made a great point about the difference of donating money and buying places in the consortium. Former is a beneficiary action and latter is an attempt to buy control. But I digress...

I dunno, they're making their money in the cloud now, they simply don't seem that interested in Windows anymore and Satya Nadella is nothing like he's predecessor. I may eat my words, but I don't think what Microsoft are doing is a bad thing, however whatever Windows becomes I think they'll use it to prop up their cloud division.

Yes games. Children play games. Xbox can play games. Computers can be used also productively, you know

I am sure he does know that but hey, you are just reinforcing what was said earlier........

Based upon your opinion of all things Windows, especially the joke that is the Linux kernel in Windows stuff, you will be choking on your words. Basic logic shows that Windows is going no where and case in point, this thread title.

Overwhelming evidence? More like completely illogical to what you are saying. The moment they where to switch, literally everything would no longer work in Windows and case in point, that is what your wishful thinking is all about.......

Oh, he is not frustrated, he is simply stating a fact.

Simple statistic of user demographic proves what I say. It's just stating the facts.

Insulting a demographic of people is not the same as stating a fact. Also, if what you said were even remotely true, and it is not, why would you want any of them on Linux, since according to you, they are all too stupid to use a computer?

Earlier this thread it was stated that android was the most installed OS by far. Please do tell me what percentage of those people know anything about the nuts and bolts of how android works and can do anything with it other than install apps or change settings.

Could someone please explain how Android being the most-installed operating system is in any way on topic in regard to the cleanest version of Windows 10?

I replaced my MacBook running Bootcamp with a Samsung Tab S5e with keyboard folio. Running DeX mode it's a fantastic replacement to take with me to jobs - So much faster, doesn't feel as limiting as I thought it would, and it's nice and light with crazy battery life.

DeX is great! I even installed Termux for a terminal.

It ins't and I can simply explain it by the those who love carpet bombing Windows threads........ as though it is somehow going to change the way things are. :D

So, you replaced a real computer with a fake one and a phone one at that. Good luck, you will need it.

Not interested mate, your reply actually highlights my point perfectly. Give it a rest.

Oh, interest is not relevant, do not like it, do not respond or continue in this thread, not complex. He is not frustrated, simple as that and he is simply stating a fact.

I see nothing defining the device as a fake computer. However, yes - I replaced my Macbook with an Android device with a desktop and it works brilliantly.

Thanks for asking.

I'll do what I like thank you, the decision to respond or not will be mine. Frustration goes both ways and neither Windows or Linux users are immune from the resulting blame game.

Ok, that is respected, respond or do not but be it no surprise when a response is given in kind. All that was said is the person was not frustrated, simply pointing out what was highlighted and nothing else. Personally, that XML file information is most beneficial.

Judging from the monologue I see you're being pestered by someone I have chosen to ignore lol. Happy 2020!

I go back to the days of UNIX, real UNIX, System III. That's even before the bsd releases. I lived through the "UNIX wars" between HP, IBM and Sun, and posix. What did it all come to in the end? Bupkis.l Linux took over. But it's like the UNIX wars all over again. Red Hat, GenToo, Ubuntu, Kbuntu, Mint, Debian, ad nauseum. And there isn't just one way to distribute software. And it's a freakin' command line!@!#$! This is supposed to appeal to the average person for whom a computer, desktop or laptop, is just a productivity or entertainment or social media tool? Gimme a break.

Just saying ....

If my 70 year old mother can successfully use linux as her daily desktop I'd say your worries are out of date and/or unwarranted.

Installing software via GUI: [NEXT] > [NEXT] > [OK] > [Tick radio check box] > [NEXT] > [Finish] with requesters popping up and disappearing again for tens of seconds at a time leaving me wondering what the hell is going on...Ugh.

sudo apt install [packagename]

Watch terminal and see exactly what's going on regarding the install process, lovely.

If I could install software identically under Windows, I would. Furthermore, the average pleb (not claiming there's any plebs here) can't even install software under Windows so it's a moot point.

It's not particularly difficult to sit an tech-ignorant old person in front of a desktop Linux distro, open Firefox, Save a few favorites, and walk away.

When the old person isn't tech-ignorant, well, the story changes. I know a person in that age range, a well-established and active pioneer in their field. They don't use Linux, and they would not use Linux over their platform of choice.

As someone that works in the real world away from corporate networks, at least 70% of all people are tech ignorant - Hence why mobile devices have become so popular. They can handle installing 'apps' on mobile devices...Just.

However, they have no problem installing malware and every virus under the sun under Windows, furthermore, they're scammed easily.

Linux is not difficult, people are just resistant to change.

Also my ex father-in-law, a retired civil engineer who worked for decades with Windows and MS office, uses linux now successfully many years. I would go so far to say that you have to be very limited in your knowledge to continue to use Windows after all that's happened with it. All the attacks that target it and all the shady stuff Microsoft places upon its customers.

Well, without being too specific, I'm not that much younger than your mother, and I am (1) not tech-ignorant, and (2) have always run Windows (3) have worked with UNIX/Linux in the past and wouldn't touch it for desktop use unless there was a program I needed that wasn't available under Windows.

All this talk about "plebes" and so on is just so arrogant. It's like saying that you need to be able to do your own car repairs, or else you should always take uber or the bus. Or unless you can replace the water pump in your dishwasher, you should wash dishes by hand. Why should PCs be any different than cars or dishwashers? For most people, they take their car to the garage for service or call a repair person to fix their dishwasher, and no one disdains them for that. So why disdain or be contemptuous about people who can't install software, etc.

Do you realize you are on a computer enthusiast forum?

People can continue to use whatever they like, as long as they weigh the pros and cons and decide accordingly.

Plebs drive a four banger Toyota. It's cheap, reliable and will take you from place a to place B. Then again enthusiasts drive Ferraris with V12s. Yeah, they break and cost like nightmare to buy and maintain. Hell, I cant afford one. But I would NEVER drive a Toyota again if I can help it.

I convinced him to switch to linux when I visited him and he had 100+ infections on the laptop. His son (a DBA with 20 years experience) had installed Eset Nod32 on the laptop and tried to cheat on the activation - which didn't work. We visit there (3000km away) only once a year and every year I spent a full day disinfecting and fixing the laptop. And the remote support to add to it. Now he's like my mother - using linux happily and I don't have to keep fixing things.

Just the fact that you spoke so highly of him and then explained how he had over 100 infections.. well.. I guess that's not covered in the civil engineering classes.

I support hundreds of Windows users of varying tech levels and we don't see machines get infected by hardly anything, much less 100+ things. Maybe an old lady in human resources is better at computers than a civil engineer.

Most smartphone users are on Android, which is well-known to be way, way more prone to malware than iPhones.
Yes and I also don't understand people who use Android due to Googles flawed security model.

If you would have read correctly you'd realize that the man was already then over 70 years old. He's just using Windows and Office just like most users do. Or was using. And you can't compare corporate locked down Windows with a home user... Most corporate users I know absolutely hate their work laptops because they can't do much anything with them.
