2019, any need for higher than 1070 at 1080p 60hz?

I've had my R5 3600 system running for a few months now, and it seems to meet performance pretty good but games like Watchdogs 2 and Mafia III still don't quite hit 60 frames.. I understand that it's basically 1660TI performance

Would a 5700/XT be a better match for 1080p? I would be looking at blower cards. My case is smaller and will benefit from that.

Too big for your case but I just bought an XFX 5700 at the $299 price. I am at 1080P too. My 980 actually holds up pretty well for my current games. I just want to run cyberpunk at decent frames. Pretty sure the 980 would struggle a bit.

I should note that the 1070 I have is a Gigabyte G1 Gaming v2. 3 fans just shy of 300mm iirc and there is more room.. When it spools up, the case heats up a bit though which is where I think a blower card could actually benefit.

I'm not sure how you're having issues running at 1080p/60hz with that setup... Are you trying to max out every setting possible? Even still... should be getting over 60fps at such a low res...

I game at ultra settings. When I was on my Dell T3500 w/ w3680 I used DSR at a little under 1440p to bring the frames up. I haven't tried that yet. 45-55 fps is all I can get in Watchdogs 2

The only thing would be vram size as even 8Gb is not enough to be safe at 1080p any more as this is both a new game to me being on sale for $14.99 to add to my steam library as I share with my 17 year old X Box junkie of a daughter .. lol but so true !!

I got it from Best Buy for $339 because it was same as Newegg with a free game

This is her PC I been upgrading it from a RX 580 to this MSI RX 5700 OC which the profile of the two cards are the very small which is two slot and 9.13" x 4.96" with single 8 pin .. I have it mounted in a mATX Raijitek STYX which the Mother board is upside down and video card fans are on top / above video card sat's 2 x 120mm down firing cheap Aigo fans as why the video card can afford that fan profile and makes for a quite system / then Ryzen 3600 has GameMaxx 300 with 2 more 120mm Aigo fans as both are out firing around CPU /Memory which is at 3600Mhz also.
My room temp is 72F

I play on a 3700x /RX 5700

That is flat-out nonsense to say that 8 gigs of vram would not be enough at 1080p. There is not a single game out there where 8 gigs of vram is even a limitation at 4k on settings that would be otherwise be playable. Of course if you're modding games then yes 8gb could be a limitation.

I have also found that, for modern games, the difference between High and Ultra is pretty small in the game. And that's usually enough of a performance difference to get you gaming comfortably. I can't see you having to drop below High on a 1070 in ANY current titles

For 1080p, the question is whether you want to drop at least $500 on a real upgrade? If I were you' I'd tough it out until we have a Turing successor.

one of my setups is on a 1080p ultra wide screen with an 8GB card. No vram issues at all. Not with FC5, not with MW not with anything I’ve played. Not sure where you’re getting this data from or how you’re compiling it to conclude 8Gb isn’t enough for 1080p

I play at 3840x2160 and my RX 480 is the 8GB version and the amount of memory used by modern 64-bit games was eye opening

Well what would you expect at 4K? Most modern games will allocate more vram if you have it so of course you will see high vram usage. And a GPU like yours would run out of raw power long before vram would be an issue anyway.

Games that make my 1080ti cry at 4k don't even hit full load on a 1070 at 1080p60 ultra settings.

I can't imagine you could even possibly run out of 8GB VRAM at that resolution.

High is for playing and Ultra is for screenshots ;)

As others have stated - Any reasonable cpu can push a 1070 to 60fps on most any game out there with dialed in settings. Vram isn’t the issue on the 1070 either.

Look at the Gamers Nexus review of Watch Dogs 2. The 1070 didn’t maintain 60 at all times at 1080p at Ultra.

Its PC gaming. Tweak away to get the FPS / eye candy you like. If that fails— upgrade. However I suggest going 5700xt or 2070s or better to make it worth the $ from a 1070 if you go that route. Which are both massive overkill for 1080/60. So then you need 1440p/144 and... :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, I was looking and the 1070 hangs with the 5700 so it's kind of a moot purchase. Would need to be an XT.. Guess I just keep chugging along

Yeah. You don't really need to upgrade yet. My 980 is a different story. I got a xfx 5700 coming Friday. I will probably do the xt bios upgrade whenever I go from 1080 to 1440.

" 2019, any need for higher than 1070 at 1080p 60hz? "

not unless you prefger to max out all settings + V-sync but why do that when HIGH setting look the same as Ultra settings unless they are compared side by side? While game playing even MEDIUM works great

You messed up the quote feature there and all you did was post the same video you posted earlier. The video does not prove what you think it does as again even if a game is using 8 gigs of vram does not mean it actually needs 8 gigs of vram. As I already told you most games will allocate more vram than you actually need if you have it to spare.

Not sure what you’re trying to show me but maybe you missed the part that said I’m running FC5 just fine. I think you’re under the misconception that if you’re using all your vram that means you don’t have enough. This isn’t the case. Many games will cache as many assets as possible if you have resources available.

MW uses all 11gb on my 1080Ti that same game runs quite well on an 8GB card and even a 6GB 1060 @ 1080p

Rdr2 is still pretty taxing at 1080p on a 1070.

I still couldnt hit the high graphics tier without it tanking to 50s and 40s on an average basis.

Have you tried messing with oc of the 1070, from what I remember you can get the boost clocks pretty high, assuming you can keep the temps down.

His sig indicates the 1070 is a Zotac mini so guessing single fan.

I mess with it at times.

Maybe a 5 to 7% difference.

Surprisingly the mini overclocks pretty well.

At full load I still run around 78c, not too hot when Oc'd

TBH I play at medium settings at 1440p with it on RDR2 and get 50 to 60.

And I can't figure out what on earth he is doing to make Far Cry 5 even allocate 8 gigs a vram at only 1080p. This guy here tested at 1080p, 1440p and even 4k with a 2080 and never uses that much vram. At 1080p he's only using around 4gb max.

EDIT: Okay I forgot that they released an HD texture pack which of course uses a lot more vram. It is still not an issue even at 4k with 8 gigs of vram though. It will allocate more than 8 gigs at 4k if you have it but that does not mean it needs it. And to think 8 gigs of vram is a problem at only 1080p is silly.

Quick answer: Yes, definitely! Hell, my 2070 dips into the lower 50s in Control, maxed out at 1080p.

The game is new to me as it was on sale cheap and I guess the texture pack was not an update anymore or I did not see it .. but it shows 1080p has some much to offer us yet ..

I over clocked the 3600 here

Have you seen Hardware unboxed's youtube video series on optimizing RDR2 settings for balanced performance/eye candy? It's an eye opener on how ridiculous the graphics settings of that game are.

I'm on the lookout, if I see a screaming deal I'll bite.. The Dell Visiontek 5700 is tempting at $280, but it's just a 5700. With an XT Bios, that could be a deal though
