This is awesome!

"Recordable ‘Laserdisc’ wasn’t sold to the public but really did exist and I've got one to show you. This video features Sony CRVdisc - a 12" Recordable Laser Videodisc system designed for professional use. Destined to be thrown away in a skip* but rescued for one last job."

I wasn't aware of that system but there has been 12" platter WORM optical discs for ages. Widely use for image archiving in hospitals. Obsolete now but a similar tech.

I used to use CD/DVD-R for backup, until I tried to restore. dye-in-polymer (DIP) wears out making the disc unreadable. It's just as bad or worse than magnetic tape.

I collect Laserdiscs. I have probably 35-40 of the best movies that game out during that time period.

I have them in record frames on my wall

Only LD machine I owned was one removed from an arcade cabinet the my manager gave me. Forgot what game was inside, think it was Mad Dog McGee.

Still have my AKIRA Criterion LD set in storage.... just no player anymore to play it on.

I used to page through those heavy cases at my cousin's house the disks were included one thing the artwork on the disk cases was amazing because the record size plastic case that holds the disk were so big.
