Hey guys I am trying to upgrade the hard drive on an old computer, here is a picture from the MOBO manual.

It looks like M.2 wont work for this computer, but does anyone know if getting a AIC SSD like the Intel Optane would work?

Right now it is using an old school 128gb SSD running Sata 6. I am looking to get a hard drive that I will eventually swap over once I decide to replace the CPU and MOBO.

Note I have my graphics card connected to the first PCIEX16 slot.

edit: do you guys think it would be a better idea to purchase an M.2 adapter and use that instead?

Do you plan to use this new device as the boot drive? If so, check with other users first.

You can add an NVMe drive with an adapter but it won't boot to it most likely. In some cases it's possible to modify the BIOS to allow it, I've done this on P67 for example, not sure with that board and chipset.

Yes I plan to boot to it and use it as my only hard drive, would that not be possible? Do you guys know how I can check for sure?

Is there an overall approach for say all ASUS motherboards that support UEFI?

SOME PCIe drives will work as they can run in AHCI mode, but NVMe by default will likely not be bootable. It seems there are various works to get it to boot on X58 but it'll be x4 PCIe 2.0 at best of course (~1800 MB/s).

Looks a bit involved though.

I'd just get the biggest (if you need a lot of storage) and fastest SSD I could afford. Use it for now and then get a NVMe as a boot drive for your new box and use the SSD for storage later.
