Pretty interesting!

"Today, Top Hat Gaming Man discusses the history of the Philips CD-i and its misrepresentation withing gaming history. To do this he is joined by guests such as Jenovi, Historic Nerd and Wrestling With Gaming."


 
Something does not jibe here. I lived in Europe was born there and had access to most euro tv channels. Belgian , French, German and Dutch. Somehow I have no recollection of this being advertised anywhere. Not even Euro MTV. Where did all the marketing for this thing take place....Martians..? Looks like a great sort of do a lot of things back then
 
The only thing the platform had going or it was Burn Cycle. And that's a heap of trash after being on the market for 3 years ans selling a million and a half devices

I was an $800 CD computer using an ancient processor, and the fancy FMV + ram add-on added $200 to the price. It would have been a much better idea if they had actually released it in the 80s (when it was announced), AND they had made games a priority from the beginning.

The SegaCD was a better gaming system, for less money (and it sold almost twice he units), and two yeas later the Sony PlayStation completely killed any interest in this device (with 2x cdrom support, and much higher-quality MJPEG.).

The only people finding a gold mine here are the folks with rose-colored glasses on.

I can't remember the 1st time I heard about this system, maybe a info-mercial back in the day, but it didn't really look too good.
 
I remember this coming out around the time of the Super Nintendo versus Genesis console wars. It was like $1000 or something ridiculous. There was no way this thing was going to compete with Nintendo and Sega at the height of the console wars back then. The only thing I cared about in those days was what console was going to get Street Fighter II and enabling blood and gore in Mortal Kombat. You know, important things.

Game Sack is pretty cool. That one dude is annoying, but the other is really cool. They're on my list of YouTubers that I watch weekly.

YouTube has so much content from so many people. Some are lying, some are truthful, some are just fictional to begin with... You can always find something for confirmation bias, something that contradicts your views, or an alien that blows shit up while mentioning what you were looking for.

WELL: a subject I have some expertise in.
I worked for Philips/ Magnavox when the CDi first hit the market and I owned the first gen version of it. The unit itself has a lot of potential that went unexplored. The CDi was NOT marketed as a gaming console. It was marketed as an "interactive learning" device. (this is what really killed it.) The games that were ported over were lackluster at best because those in charge didn't think gaming was important.
The wireless "thumbstick" controller was horrible for gaming. Why they didn't have a game pad type control early on I have no idea.
Interesting feature that first and 2nd gen units has was a slot for a optional MPEG1 decoder. So you could playback "Digital" movies on CD encoded in MPEG1. Really video quality wasn't much better than a VHS tape, but hey; its digital. Remember this predates DVD players.
By the time the 3rd gen "top loader" CDi hit the market I was already laid off from Magnavox. No tears on my part. They treated their employees like sh*t; I went on to bigger and better things.

Yet another gaming channel like a million others, except his waaaaaacky signature trait is a silly hat. These YouTubers must have something waaaaaacky to distinguish themselves I guess.

Nope. My CDi ended up on EBAY before long. I considered just keeping it for a "high end" single disc player. But in truth it sounded like sh*t on CD playback.
It sound like it had DACs in it from a boom box.
 
Alright, watched the video. I didn't like him as a presenter and really they didn't give much information at all that wasn't obvious. The cut scenes of him holding consoles (all random japanese ones) and claiming they were all worse, wasn't really required. Plus, the hat and his ears? No thanks.
 
I remember watching infomercials on this when I was a kid. I think they were selling it for $599. Which was insane.

Man, I loved that format, was a little late for the standard MDs but was there for the Hi-MDs. Missed the sounds of the mechanism, the clicks of the decks opening and closing, the feel of the disc ramping up and down, that fact a single AA can give you days of playback. Miss my Hi-MD and it's gumstick NIMH battery, shame the screen was early gen blue OLED and gave out. :(

MD was a fantastic format hamstrung by Sony being Sony lol. I've still got mine packed up to send off to somebody that wanted them I need to look up their address again...
