PewDiePie quits YouTube saying he's too tired to go on

Mostly avoid youtube. But kudos to this guy, whoever he is. He apparently made millions. The powers that be are changing the rules of his playground. Nothing wrong with taking some time off. Maybe take a round the world cruise, get laid in every port and then see what he wants to do after that. Maybe by then the new rule set will be stable.

first time watching a stream of his was recently when he went into Terraria for the first time. I know his fans demand he 100% that game or something and he kinda got upset about it.

Getting old sucks, games start to feel like a chore maybe, I could see him wanting to protect that by not relying on it so much, and guy is smart and probably got talents in other areas if he exercised it more.

His new wife and him getting robbed recently is also part of the equation probably...

The real disturbing part of PewDiePie... is all the clones he spawned, how many rando annoying fucks do we really need to watch playing games... do we really need to watch people playing game unless they're doing a "Lets play" type of review?

The only one remotely tolerable to me is camelot331. And even then I more prefer his youtube videos talking about working at gamestop, and check in to his youtube streams for only a few minutes before I'm bored. I really don't get how people can spend hours watching streamers...

PewDiePie's channel hasn't been about gaming for years. I give him credit for evolving beyond that while continuing to grow his channel.

I really don't understand all the salt thrown his way. I'm not a fan of his, but not because I hate him. What he does just isn't my thang, but I admire him for being a success at that thang. He isn't a huge jerk like the Paul brothers and like YouTube "stars".

People just jealous.

I'd have quit long ago. With the amount of money he made he can live comfortably for 10 lifetimes.

Ya exactly.

DAMN KIDS AND THEIR STREAMING AND YOUTUBES.

Let people enjoy things. Jesus.

When Felix already made that much money I don't think he cares about money that much anymore. YouTube "stars" all tend to suffer from this strive to grow & please his audience base and it's like an addiction and it becomes mentally very taxing/stressful in the long run to keep up with that flow you expect your followers to have from you. The bigger the followerbase the more stress it can put on you mentally. I've got a small channel myself and I made only ridiculously little money before YouTube decided I cannot at all monetize my videos anymore because of too much copyright issues but I still keep doing it as a hobby that it also started that way with no intention of making money off it and I also feel this urge to continue "serve" and please my followers but it consumes a lot of my sparetime/social life (barely have time for other stuff) and I often question myself why I keep wasting my life for it but it's just a thing these YouTubers all tend to feel, whether it's an addiction to keep your fans appriciating what you do in life (as opposed to not get any appriciation at all) or just feel like having some kind of purpose in life or whatever. I also took a short break myself (kept doing it for nearly 7½ years now) and it felt refreshing to not have these "to-do's" all the time inside your head and give yourself a mental break, yet I couldn't bare the thing of giving up so I got back into it and here I am questioning is it really worth it and running in circles again meanwhile another voice is whispering "just keep doing it!".

Casey Neistat touched this subject very well in a video that I think most of the successful Tubers can relate to:

I think for outsiders it's easy to think, ez life, ez money or whatever but it's extremely mentally taxing too, don't think it's a healthy life to live in the long run even if you enjoy what you do.

It's only a vacation of sorts he's taking after all, he has been surprised (not) by the media taking off hand comments as a full on retirement thing including adding words he didn't say.

He made a meme about it on Twitter, but he temporarily deleted Twitter too since again, vacation, it's the holidays, his UK home was flooded, Japan home got fully cleaned out of stuff (never saw that one coming), he needs the time to fix his shit and enjoy the family.

Edit

Or just mothball youtube in favor of a news forum to link cat videos from other sites.

i always wonder what will happen to YT stars once they don't have an audience anymore. I mean do these folks have skills outside of sitting in a chair?

That's really narrow-minded. Not all big channels on Youtube are about streaming video games. It's kinda like looking at Britney Spears and saying all singers are trash.

Matpat on the Game Theorists runs a consultation business and does data analysis on the side, primarily focused on Youtube. Corridor Digital has always had a business being the alternative VFX house for small producers. There are plenty of channels that also focus on analysis, discussions, tutorials, and so on.

not just a gaming channel, he does a lot of these types of videos too (Socrates book review):

and of course his video games, I dunno how much he's involved besides the voice acting and general direction of things, but they look kinda fun at least and apple store refusing to offer it because "it's too poopy" is pretty funny

Maybe not. But I suppose starting off paying cash for college would be nice, or simply retiring off investing your money. As many are entertaining personalities they could easily move into other forms of entertainment.

I can't hate, starting off my life working mcdonalds and production work to eventual electrical engineering, I would have loved to started that path off making a few million while still at home.

I've my adult life has taught me anything, the average person can't see more than 10m into the future. How old is this kid? 20s? $30mil? My guess is by 40 he'll be in a double wide nestling a Natty-Ice between his legs telling the neighborhood kids how much money he used to make playing video games.
He just turned 30 in October. His main schtick these days is being an edgy cultural and political satirist/commentator. He doesn't do a whole lot of gaming anymore.

He just got married. Lay his wife around the world? Though I think he's already done that :ROFLMAO:.

Found a recent pic of him. :(

Grumpy old men, if I can calm you for a second I have a real question. Is he pronounced poo-dee-pie, pyoo-dye-pye, pyoo-dee-pie....?

I imagine it being on the job 24/7. Everywhere you go, everything you do, the shots have to perfect, and the post-production is a lot of work and pressure is high. It's not something I'd want to do.

What I don't understand is when people reach a level of success (or bank) and they get overwhelmed - why is it so hard to unplug? The bankroll literally gives them that power. It's certainly better then heading into alcoholism, drugs, depression, etc. If I were in such a place, I'd say f-all and and to maintain purpose I'd probably start studying deep field astronomical data to help understand why and where our universe came from until I figure out what I want to do next.

Can someone PLEASE make some competitition to youtube?! all they are doing now, instead of sharing the ad revenue with content creators, is looking for ANY reason to just keep it for themselves.

Twitch is probably in the best position to add a youtube type feature or service to what they have or possibly spin off from it.

The pressure to maintain success is why they can't unplug, especially in the case of Youtube and dealing with its algorithms. If you miss a regularly scheduled upload, you can literally undo months of gaining viewership. When Youtubers go on vacation, they have to preplan uploads so that their channel doesn't fall to irrelevance while they are on vacation.

Can confirm.

My entire childhood dream was to play video games for a living. Everyone that I ever told, said to me that is unrealistic. Bunch'a assholes.

I racked up a stream on Twitch(formerly known as Justin.tv) with 3000 active viewers back in the day. I probably peaked #1 on the stream charts 3 or 4 times back in 2008. It wasn't monetized like it is today and everyone told me it was a waste of time so I ended up getting a real job which I am happy with. But I always have that nagging thought in the back of my head, "What if I just stuck with it?". There have been 3 times in my life I missed out on being a multi-millionaire, oh well, guess I'll keep waiting.

Not interested in his videos. But I am sure he can still make some profit from it. Even if he only pulls in a fraction of what he used to, he would still make more than the average American/British/Swedish citizen. He can even relax a bit and focus less on figuring out what makes money. Just have fun with it, still make enough money to sustain himself. With the millions he already made he is set for life if he doesn't waste it on nonsense. But may as well make more money while having fun.

they need to get on it!

Owned by Amazon so the same issues will come to pass eventually.

well if you wanna know the truth... but if you're good w/ fake news, then, do you.

I know that he said he was just "taking a break", but media outlets love their hyperbole. Honestly, I don't care either way. He could disappear into the sea forever and it wouldn't matter to me.
