The Mandalorian- new Disney+ Star Wars series

If rumor are true that they have had to go back to the editing room 3 times (including bringing in Lucas to try to save things) because of poor test audience reception, then I have little hope for this movie.
Yea i hope its way better but definitely no holding my breath.

Curious how different this is when say the newest Game of Thrones or whatever super popular TV show releases a new episode. I mean sure Star Wars has a much more global fan base than say Greys Anatomy but a quick look at a site shows almost 2k seeds for the latest episode of GA of a single format, and sure the Mandalorian has well over 5k for the latest episode of a particular format, but lets be honest there's a lot more Star Wars fans out there :) That said, I do wonder how much of this is overseas where the Disney+ is region locked? I mean you can't put out a popular content that people like and then tell them "Yeah sorry this isn't for you" and not expect others to get them.

I love how the show is high quality and doesn't just rely on nostalgia or Easter eggs to drive the story forward...I just hope they don't try and connect this to Rise of Skywalker by making the 'baby' the key to Palpatine's return in Episode 9

Take away all the SW tropes, nods and winks, and there isn't much left. Watched Ep 2. Really not impressed.

Production quality is really fantastic. But it really felt like ep 2 was revisting SW past.

That and the irritating plot. I was looking for a cool western influenced Bounty Hunter tales along the lines of "Pale Rider" or "High Plains Drifter".

But instead we are getting:
Muppet Baby and the Mando Baby Sitter - This episode featuring Jawa slapstick.

most people do seem to be getting an Old Western vibe with this...it also has a Japanese Manga flavor...I think the show will be better appreciated after all 8 episodes drop and people can binge it as 1 giant 4 hour+ movie...the episodes are too short and don't seem to really work as standalone episodes...

The Western Vibe isn't some coincidental thing that some people are getting. It's the point.

‘The Mandalorian’: Jon Favreau and Pedro Pascal on Creating a Western on Steroids
[The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) strides across a barren landscape towards a solitary drinking hole, his boots clinking like a cowboy’s spurs as he walks. Inside, he swiftly dispatches a group of vagabonds with his two fists and one blaster, whipping the weapon around like a gunslinger who can shoot faster than his own shadow.

It's more like a Western with SW flavor, that SW with Western flavor. The only way you could not get it, is if you have never seen a Western. But those of us who have seen Shane, Pale Rider, High Plains Drifter, and countless other Westerns, it's not a hint or a Vibe, it's clubbing you over the head with it.

The Mandelorian is that Mysterious Stranger/Man with no Name from countless westerns. Here it's complete with the desert setting, gunfights, bar fights, spur jangling, bronco busting...

what are you saying?...you like Westerns, you see the Western vibe with Mandalorian, yet you still don't like it because it has that SW Western vibe...makes no sense

I was pretty clear what I didn't like.

I thought it was pretty great until the reveal at the end of Ep 1, when that Vibe completely lost it's edge. Before that, it felt like it was going to be more it's own thing. A different part of the universe more about that bounter hunter existence, and less about retreading SW nostalgia.

After that it went back to SW nostalgia bait, which I am sick of at this point. I'd be happy to have the light sabers and The Force put to rest forever, or at least given a good long rest.

That and the whole damn
Muppet Baby on board
thing.

the classic Western is filled with stories where 2 mis-matched people go on a quest together...ever watch True Grit?...that was a great Coen. Bros Western about a guy and a 14 year old girl on a quest to find the outlaw that murdered her father

Well.. this was unexpected. I thought I'd give it a shot and damn... exceeded expectations by a million miles. It's like they listened to the bitching and made what the core fanbase wanted.. actual Star Wars.

Watched up to latest episode (6) now and this is what the movies should have been. It's very close to the original star wars films in feel and look, the environments/sets/CGI/lighting (using led walls for that IRL raytracing haxx) and overall lack of SJW bullshit is fucking great. Story is simple but fun and enjoyable, with a few interesting little deeper parts if you want to dig. The set/setting building is excellent too, classic Star Wars style, can see where Lucas's influence has come on board
The latest three movies are UTTER TURDS in comparison to this in almost every way but visuals. Rogue One is the best of the new ones by far but this blows all of them out the door.
I'd rather watch three seasons of Mandalorian than one of those wretched shitfests they call Star Wars today.

No wonder the SJWs hate it, there isn't some diversity bullshit cast for the sake of it, almost every character is very well played, positioned and written, no virtue signalling and the baby is cute as fuck. Mando is played well and there is just enough character building to make it all work. There is no strong female just for the sake of it, the ones that are in there are well casted and do the role excellently.
Western vibe is definitely there and played on and off through the series so far, pretty well pulled off. There are some epic new droids too and great appearances from old favourites. Nostalgia levels are good, especially the usage of old droid/tech parts with new uses, while not relying on that completely.

Beautiful job Disney. Didn't think i'd say that either..
Only criticism of disney plus is the quality can be a bit poor on freshly uploaded releases (ran into this on ep6) - a damn 720p torrent looked better.

^ I had this feeling when I saw Rogue One - "damn why can't every Star Wars be like this, the battle sequences are best in franchise history".
Spectacular sequences, agreed. R1 was closest to the original Star Wars of all the new ones. Sadly there isn't so much of that (yet) in Mandalorian but the hand to hand and ground battles are truly excellent, especially the combat vs droids... oh boy I hope some of that goes into the next movies. It might make them more bearable..

I wish the episodes were longer too. I very much like this series, Bill Burr last night, epic! I like its subtlety, how it rolls out slow on you, pulls you in. Baby Yoda is a great character, even though it isn't baby Yoda, cause Yoda is dead. Imagine how many baby Yoda dolls they will sell. Well done.

what about the ending to Episode 5??...they were strongly hinting/implying that the mystery man at the end was Boba Fett...you can hear his distinctive spurs clanking as he approaches the dead body

Yeah there was even a mention of his name iirc, I think was in ep6, wasn't expecting that! Puts Fett in perspective too, they made him a bit too goofy in the original ones sadly.

Disney killed SW for me. The sequel trilogy did not happen and SW canon is restored. Disney can take laser swords and go fall on them

Meh, soooooo much lazy writing in the damned thing that makes no sense. Someone asked me on another forum why I thought it wasn't worth my time after I watched the first two episodes..... Dissertation follows:

Ice monster... why? because its star wars and we need big monsters. It didn't advance the plot in any meaningful way that I could see. Empty filler.

"All I have is this directional indicator" …. that looks like an electronic dousing rod with associated red blinking light and not a video screen or holographic directional display? I know, paying homage to starwars tech mashup.... but we JUST saw them using holographic data discs for "aboveboard" contracts. Just a silly decision to be silly.

"You can only get there riding these beasts" "why?" because the writers said so without any explanation at all, that I remember, just "they're the only way". Oh, and apparently you only need them on the way in, because apparently you can walk out, which conveniently makes you vulnerable to another bounty hunter attack.

and... THREE bounty hunters show up the same day to find the target, yet they have a month to fix the ship, replacing everything jawas took, and nooooobody else shows up in that time. Really? They set it up to be bounty hunter central....until they didn't need it to be... 10 minutes later show time... with zero explanation. All just to provide some "bonding" between Nolte and the bounty hunter.... that (so far) means nothing as the Nolte character stayed behind.

This guy is a "foundling", i.e. orphan. Apparently lots of these bounty hunters are foundlings. So we don't know their genetic heritage. Yet his ancestors rode ancient beasts so he should be able to tame this one. How do we know this? He was an orphan.

when I scout the base, my helmet doesn't have built in zoom/rangefinding equipment? I need to hold up an electronic expandable telescope to my helmet? Just incongruous.

while I, too, liked the bounty hunter droid design..... he survives how many blaster hits, and a blaster cannon hit... "because he needs to", only to be taken down by one blaster hit by our hero when he conveniently needed to be taken out.

A blaster cannon that can't kill a droid and can't blast its way through brick for several dozen seconds, can conveniently lasercut through a large steel door in a very few seconds.

while the second StarWars Monster (TM) at least advances the plot a bit by revealing something about the target, there is ZERO explanation as to why such a large, tough beast is taken out by a teeny little 6" knife blade. The why is "because we needed it to"... At least I saw no pre- or post explanation of poisons or uniquely vulnerable killing locations.

And when I say "explanation" I don't mean a big, full blown dissertation. More like the throwaway line in Star Trek about "Heisenberg compensators" regarding transporters. No explanation needed about how they work, just that there's something that needs a nod to help the suspension of disbelief. We know about The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle being problematic for something like a transporter, so you throw in a brief reference to "Heisenberg compensators" to let you know that it has been accounted for, enabling the continuance of the suspension of disbelief.

Yes, obviously in a work of fiction, things happen because the writers need them to. But if there is no internally available explanation in the story, and the reader/viewer has to provide them out of hole cloth, then its bad writing, IMO, and takes the viewer out of the story long enough to have to make up/provide an explanation of his or her own, ruining the suspension of disbelief.

I can do the same to almost every movie or show ever. Thing is if you can look past and enjoy that.. That's up to you. Obviously this one isn't for you.

I know. I can overlook some, but there were just too damned many for me.

The funny thing is it's written like that on purpose. It really captures the feel of the OT and that's what I love about it.

It's grown on me. I liked the first episode, then was kinda meh for a couple, but now I like it again. Little things like how he has to convey acting while always wearing a helmet. Tiny little tilts mean something. Staying motionless means something - because you know the character.

I like the giant gray area that is his outlook on the world. Actually reminds me of Geralt in a lot of ways. The resigned tone, the world-weary outlook, the fact that nobody seems to know to not tangle with him, and the fact that he dislikes injustice but is first and foremost a survivor.

Yesterday's episode was great.
I love all these crazy 1 and done celebrity castings.

They could do tv shows instead of movies from now on and I'd be fine with it.
I just wish they were hour long episodes.

Yep..aside from a few annoyances, the shows been great. Anyone else immediately notice the Kurgan in the latest ep? Calls for some good Star Wars/ Highlander crossover memes ;)

(including bringing in Lucas to try to save things)

Possibly the worst thing they could do. The original Star Wars is what it is because George did not have complete creative control - people who knew how to make movies were there to overrule his dumb ideas. Return of the Jedi and the prequels should be evidence enough of what Lucas can do when surrounded by only yes men.

He sucks at directing a movie but he does know how to make a Star Wars movie feel like Star Wars. Even prequels, as much as the first two sucked, felt like Star Wars movies. He just needs people to tame his vision and put them into a sensible form. Episode 4 and 5 and most of the EP6 (the movie is is more than just Ewoks you know) are proof of it. So what I am saying I think they did good for asking Lucas some ideas on how to make Star Wars great again, so to speak.

they spent too long showing that droid being rebuilt.... it has a role to play.

Finally got around to finishing it.

For someone completely sick of Jedi, and the Force, this stuff was toned down as much as we can expect in SW these days; At least enough to make it tolerable. Though I suspect they will ramp it back up in season 2.

Overall, it was decent space western.
