Xbox X

The naming scheme is terrible. Spend millions on R&D, spend nothing on figuring out a unique consumer friendly name. Branding fail...

let’s look at exhibit A) Wii U

I mean it's not like they're currently selling the Xbox One X or anything.

I don’t think the name is all that bad. MS has been talking all about the XBX being the most powerful console ever since it was revealed and this name continues the X naming trend. It is going to create a connection between the two in people's minds. MS' naming schemes for their consoles have always kind of sucked, but at least this one makes some semblance of sense. Also, the Wii U didn't fail due to branding. The Wii U failed because Nintendo's marketing was abysmal and had people confused on what the Wii U was. At not point did Nintendo's marketing even explain that the Wii U was a new console, they went out of their way to avoid showing the thing for months after the announcement and solely focused on the controller. This is pretty obviously not an XBO or XBX, I don't think many people will get confused due to the name.

Microsoft's entire naming convention has been bad.

Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One ??? (Xbox One X as a sub category)
Xbox Series X

I should go buy an Xbox 360, clearly it has the numerical advantage.

Do you think just increasing the number at the end is the only way to do it?

Marketing will always be marketing.

In the end, most consumers will either know what the current gen is, or the clerk at gamestop will be able to tell them, or their kids that are asking for them.

As you are a camera guy, is the Sony a6500 vastly superior than the really small numbered A9 II?

Buy me Bonestorm or go to hell!

I've had an Xbox One X for 2 years in the normal form factor. Don't see the point of this...

From what I saw of the WiiU, no casual gamers had any idea what it was. Nintendo did a poor job of explaining it. The Wii had a bunch of add-ons and the brand/packaging were too similar, so people just ignored it. At my Best Buy they actually put up a little handmade sign telling customers that it wasn't a Wii tablet.
I hope MS has learned from that. They have a full year to burn into everyone's mind that this is completely new. With the odd half-upgrades from this gen it might not be as easy as people think. Especially with them going on an on that the Xbox One X is the most powerful console in the world the exact same way.

Frankly, I liked that Microsoft kept changing it up to this point. Just iterating the number always seemed lazy to me. Nintendo has been doing it the right way, in my opinion. Microsoft should have kept their codenames for the consoles. I hope there is a "Scarlett" or "Anaconda" edition for early adopters like the "Scorpio" edition of the One X. Would be even more bad ass if it had a color scheme to match (blood red for the former, snake green for the latter).
xbox one x has that today
The One X has 3 USB ports. That is a little tight if you have other devices connected, like an external drive. Keyboard & mouse support is available on all versions of the Xbox, but it is game dependent.

That is good that it appears to use the same controllers. That will keep people from having to replace what they already invested in

That would be really fun actually. IMO numbers are for model #s, not for the name. Make the name stand out instead of being in a sequence.

Offshoot, I do like the form factor. As my current xboxone sits on my desk next to my monitor, I would like this as it takes up less desk space and could even fit behind the monitor.

This is funny, heh !!!

Or just a calculated business decision, the lack of delineation intentional. If you're sitting on arena sized warehouses full of unsold Xbox One's and X's, then blurring the lines between model #'s and making it ambiguous means not freezing sales of existing stockpiles. It's not like they didn't consider calling it "Xbox Two" or other names to set it apart. But the number crunching bore out "Xbox Series X" -- dumbs and moms can buy the cheaper console not realizing it's obsolete, and everyone else will recognize the newer console based on the pricepoint.

Of course, any Series X exclusives might cause confusion to people that bought a $199 "Xbox-something" at Costco and find out later they can't play a next-gen title, but at that point it'll be post-sale and Microsoft no care.

looks better than the ps5 leaks.

You mean those dev units that will look nothing like the released console? I disagree still, at least that will fit in an entertainment center, unless this tall cube can be laid down on its side as well.

There's no system named Playstation 4 Slim. They did forget Xbox One S All Digital in their list though.

I'll never get over the fact that someone said "Hey, let's call our cheapest version the Xbox SAD version!" and it was accepted and used instead of getting a stern look for mocking their own brand.

Sure the SAD has been consistently their best seller, but total units compared to Sony is, well, SAD indeed.

I'm sure it was intended to do exactly what it did: Get people talking about it and spread the word around. Good names and names that get talked about are not always the same thing.

If VGChartz's estimates are even close to correct for the XB1, it looks like the Switch has even outsold it worldwide at this point.

It can be laid on it's side, this has been confirmed. Though, it's not really all THAT big standing up. Too big for most home entertainment systems (even though people really should stop shoving hot systems into heat traps) but it looks like its not even as tall as three of the XSX controllers. Probably in line with small ITX towers.

is it taller than this though?

That's definitely still too tall for the shelves in my center. Also, I open my door and slide out my console a little (my shelves slide out) to let it breathe better and run quieter when I play on them. But if you can lay it on its side, it's a non-issue for me then.

I'm definitely getting a PS5 at launch just because it has much better exclusives and hopefully some remastered PS4 exclusives will launch on it (like TLoU 2) and I'm betting Ghosts of Tsushima will be a launch title for it (cross releasing with PS4). I already have a gaming PC and Shield TV/Steam Link to play PC games on my living room TV too, so until those first party studios they acquired last year start pumping out some decent exclusives that aren't on PC either, I don't see much value for an Xbox still.

Microsoft taking a cue from Apple... “let’s change the form factor with every iteration.”

Surely must be some people out there who would buy a whole new media stand just for their day one xbox purchase.

I’m not exactly drooling over the design. A PC chassis like that would include some kind of window or mesh opening, but it feels like they want to hide what’s inside the thing. I hope there is some type of active cooling in a box that big.

It looks stupid not to include some type of customizeable RGB led on the exterior, if you’re gonna plop that thing on top of your existing stand (insert red led ring joke here). We’re beyond the point of not including RGB to make a statement, it is a clearly desired product.

Edit: oh ok they maybe put it on the top/side where it will probably never be seen...

But if they can deliver 120fps gaming at 4k/8k for something around $600, they may very well be on to something. Not dethroning PC entirely but the idea of a budget build PC might be challenged. At least for anyone that has been holding off any upgrades for the last couple generations and don't want to get up to speed on all the hardware knowledge.

It makes sense that it hasn't fallen into the RGB Everything craze. It might look like a PC case, but the clean and simple design of it still leans more towards the home theater and "TV box" way of thinking. You don't see a ton of blinged out AV receivers or soundbars.

120fps at 4k/8k?

Maybe we will though! Lots of flashy gaming setups are out there already, just not in the living room. It’s MS so I would trust if they included RGB it would at least be done pretty tastefully.

120fps at 4k/8k?

If they want to they’ll find a way to market it as that. I don’t think anyone is sure what specs they are aiming for. But at least 60fps 4k, those are the big buzz words right now and a step up from where they are at. But will it be more of the same, sacrificing some quality in order to provide a particular experience?
