Selectively turn On or Off Graphics Cards - without removing them

Is there a process that allows the selection of any installed (or available) graphics card in any given PC to be switched on the fly without rebooting. POWERING DOWN the selected GPU?

For example, if you have an Nvidia Titan V Graphics Card that is used primarily for video games, flight simulators etc., but in actual daily use you only need this graphics power when playing those certain games or for certain CAD applications.

So 75% of the time, you could use far less video power for surfing the web ect or normal computer tasks.

The desired process would allow you to power down the Titan and simultaneously power up (or just switch to) a less expensive, lesser power hungry video card and allows this to be done hot, or on the fly. With only a brief blanking of the screen when this occurs.

I'm not talking about switching cables. I'm talking about completely powering down the Titan V when not actively using it and only powering the onboard or lesser GPU. This would involve programmatically turning of the power to the power supply pins to the GPU....same as when the computer is shut down.

When not in use, I simply don't need the power consumption or wear on the more expensive GPU.

Has anyone come up with a way to do this yet?
 
It's called Optimus. It's only targeted at gaming laptops, so I don't think you can get it running on any old computer.

Unless you have like a half a dozen GPUs in your system, you won't really notice the added idle power.

Cards are designed to throttle down and become idle. Not have instant power cut and power surges with a live board. I would think cutting power to a vid card with a hot mobo would cause more harm/wear.
 
I can't think of a way to do it all in one box but I can see using an EGPU enclosure via Thunderbolt sitting between the computer and monitor and powering it down when not in use. And maybe running a separate video out to the monitor from the IGPU (say HDMI while the gaming GPU is connected via TB to EGPU then DP to monitor).

But that's alot of hassle to save some electricity.
 
The main reason I wanted to shut it down is because over time the fans seem to fail.....capacitors too....but fans first.
Just see no reason to put wear and tear on an idling graphics card that costs a good bit when not needed....but thanks for the replies.
