It is Quake 3’s 20th Anniversary today

Damn, I was thinking of starting this thread for months. Quake 3 is still the best Quake. Sadly, this sort of games are not coming back. History repeats itself but I jut don't see fast multiplayer games making a come back no matter what

Maybe he means the Quake 3 engine?

No, he meant Quake III Team* Arena

* The "team focused" expansion that no one played

There have been attempts at doing Q3A or UT99 style games but I don’t think any of them really managed to capture the feel of either of those games and what made them so fun.

It was a solid game, but since the single player was just bots, I quickly got bored with the muiltiplayer after I discovered Counterstrtike Beta and Battlefield 1942.

It was better than Unreal Tournament, but only barely.

I never really understood the comparison, outside of both being FPS's and being launched around the same time.

They are fundamentally different by leaps and bounds.

Both games are fun, although the Quakes will always be my favourite.

played the hell out of Q3 back in the day. I was pretty freaking good at it. Won a bunch of tournaments.

sucks I got old and could never play twitch shooters again.....that an most of the MP FPS games I grew up on now suck....Miss BF...After 2142 it was all consolized garbage.

Played it almost daily between 2004 and 2007. Joined a clan (XTO) and was an above average player. One on one was always a blast if said server was mostly dead.

Getting too old for fast shooters now.

That's because...

No community maps
No community mods
No community servers
No community skins

Micro transactions
Constant advertisements for passes and packs
Total Conversions? LOL
Skinner box progression systems, gotta keep dangling the carrot

And while some of the community stuff could be brought back, the reality is that the mod community for those games(q3a, etc.) had been built up over time. Now they'd basically be starting from scratch. That's of course assuming mod tools ever get released, as I recall black ops 3 promised mod tools on PC and didn't even start the beta for them until the next COD game was already out(nevermind that the COD community on PC for the past few games was usually dead in a couple months anyway).

Quake Live basically nailed it. It was exactly what it needed to be.

Except the premium plan was retarded and useless and eventually they gimped the shit out of not premium and it was downhill from there.

What is stopping a crowd funded respin of generic twitch fps with all the trimmings;

Community servers
Community skins

So many people want it.
I'd play that and pay good money for it.

Closest thing was doom 2016. Romero? Are you listening?

Jesus, has it been 20 years? I played the hell out of some Q3 back in high school at LAN parties.

Diabolical.

Reflex was a thing but died fast, unfortunately.

I was a big Quake III and UT player in the day, but when HL2DM was released I preferred Valves alternative. The server and map customization was fantastic under SRCDS.

I still run an SRCDS server to this day.

Diabotical you mean? Slipped under the radar for me. Reflexes require using regularly to maintain like many other brain functions but they aren't there forever indeed.

Epic was making a completely free version of Unreal Tournament. Open source with community input, development, and everything.

But Fortnite got big and everyone working on it got pulled to that. It's basically been on hold since then. So it's still in pre-alpha status, but it is totally playable and fun. And it has plenty of community servers, mods, maps, and skins.

Quake II was way better than 3. I thought Quake Champions was pretty good or better than 3. Haven't played it in awhile though. I wonder if people still play that one.

Q2 was awesome. Never got into the Q3 no matter how much I tried.. You know they say the Q1 was the best of all..

Yeah, got auto-corrected by my phone

The original UT still enjoys a very active community with modded servers. I was playing it only a few weeks ago.

Funny, I just installed Q3 last night to see if I could break 1000fps in the timedemo (four). Still a no go even with a 5Ghz i7-7700k and a GTX 1080 and "r_smp" enabled (if it even still functions, it made no difference). I think it has some kind of cap in the engine.

I think they capped it @ 300fps

I remember playing this, UT99 and C&C at my very first LAN party. Those were the days!!
Dial-up latency Instagib separated men from boys, and null-modem C&C normal people from clinically insane due to connection issues. :)

Yeah, I check it out once a year or so and although those servers are cool for a few mins, I wish I could still find some vanilla servers to play on or at least ones that aren't heavily modded with crazy sounds and different weapon drops.

Same with UT 2004, as I miss onslaught a lot.

I wonder what goes into hosting a server for this. Probably pretty simple. I would be willing to run one.

People want it, but the money is elsewhere. For all of the bitching and moaning every 10 of us do about the current state of the game industry there's easily 1-2 whales just shoveling money into developers pockets in f2p games or even full price games with microtransactions. Top that off with the modern gamer apparently needing to have a bar fill up after every match and the occasional whizzbangdingwahooguitarriff as a number goes up on their screen, and there's the problem. Yes, there are a couple examples of these games still somewhat existing like that recent unreal tournament project but the fact is that it stagnated and while there is a community it's probably measured in the hundreds of players tops as opposed to the thousands. As far as crowdfunding such a game? Without a huge name behind it(and Romero is not a huge name anymore), it won't work.

I cracked 100fps with a Pentium 3 667EB and a GeForce 2 GTS in the day!
