Pixel 4

I'm considering the pixel 4xl, but I'm very disappointed with the lack of free photo backup and the lack of the fingerprint scanner.

Should I get the One plus 7 pro instead?

Currently I have a pixel 2xl and my wife wants it (she has the Nexus 6p)

I'm not a fan of curved edge displays plus I'll take the monthly security updates from Google.

Wireless charging and IP68 rating And always on display our nice features for the Pixel that the OnePlus doesn't have.

The camera, man portrait shots are insane

Yeah, I'd go with the OP 7T or 7 Pro. They still get relatively fast updates, are water resistant enough for anyone not swimming with their phones (prolly just as much as an IP rated phone, they just didn't want to pay for the rating, which I agree with), and the camera is actually pretty close to the Pixels at least in lit photos and in videos. Can't go wrong with it IMO.

i have seen a few water tests. The OnePlus 7 Pro fails that very quickly. So definitely don’t take it swimming.

Pixel 4 $200 off sale live everywhere now.

https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/11/24/google-pixel-4-black-friday-deal-200-off/

They still only offer $135 for my 2 XL though and I've pretty much talked myself out of getting this phone. While I've been traveling a lot recently, I've been taking note of a lot of scenes I could really use a wide-angle lens while trying to fit certain buildings and landscapes into frame, where in some instances it was impossible to back up enough to do so. Makes me think that at least if I get an iPhone or OP phone, I would be able to capture scenes like that where the Pixels just can't do it at all. I have yet to come across a situation where a zoom lens would be of value either, so their logic in that decision just baffles me still.

At least my 2 XL has still been great and gets another year of updates should I decide to keep it that long. I might bite on a OP phone if I see a good enough deal on one though. I would def prefer the 7T over the Pros though and not sure there's going to be any deals on those yet.

Although I'm really happy with the size, camera, usability, and for the most part battery with my P4 I'm having buyer's remorse for not getting the XL. lol

Commander, great to hear that! Am crossing my fingers you will have good battery results like us other [H] users who have it.
Finally pulled the trigger! I went with a 128GB 4XL and Google Fi, so I'll get 50% of the purchase price back in service credit. By my calculations, I'll get about 18 months of GF service at no cost. Not a bad deal.

Were you always on Google Fi?

T-Mobile!?
I don't know what your present T-Mobile plan is and how much monthly data you use, but I do know that for a single user Google Fi costs $80 per month for using 6 GB or more of data.

A T-Mobile single user post paid Essential plan with unlimited data is $60 month (with auto pay). That's $20 a month less than Google Fi

I'm on a T-mobile prepaid plan for $50/month. It has unlimited text and talk with 10GB LTE data. Im on wifi 95% of the time and never use more than 200-400 MB data/month.

The GF plan I got is $20/month unlimited text and talk plus $10/GB LTE. My bill will be cut almost in half by going to GF.

I went with the white XL 128 GB. I had the Note 10+ for a few days and the screen was gorgeous but the deep Samsung software integration is annoying and Bixby is a steaming pile of trash. I know it can be disabled and buttons remapped but I’d rather just go for the stock Google Android experience. That and the crazy good camera. I’ve had two Google phones before and I loved them, but Android wasn’t quite mature enough yet and was still lacking a bunch of apps that were only on iOS at the time. Now I have zero reason to use iOS. And it was $200 off on Google’s site, plus $350 for my old iPhone. So yay and such.

As for data, I’m on my family’s unlimited business plan through Verizon paying 20 a month so I have no reason to switch anytime soon. :p

Then you got a great deal, enjoy your Pixel 4 XL and plan! :D:p

I wanted a white one, too, but they're out of stock until the last week of December. (n)

Nice. I just finally finished transferring literally all of my Apple crap over to Google stuff so I won't have to worry about setting up too much up when I get it. Also bought a USB Type C flash adapter for my 512 GB Samsung EVO MicroSDXC card for extra phone storage.

Damn, I kinda want to return mine for a white one now.

This article just popped up in my news feed and made me laugh at the title.

I agree with most that the phone was mostly disappointing, but I don't think I'd return it if I got it as a gift, lol.

Deal going on at Bestbuy right now. Buy a pixel 4/4XL new or refurb and there’s a $200 BB gift card for you.

Yeah, saw some people price matching Amazon's new price yesterday too for $618, plus the $200 BB gift card. Damn good deal for a decent phone, but this phone would have to be nearly free for me to buy it at this point since it's missing some key hardware that I want in my next phone. I think the 4a will be a better overall phone despite slightly lower specs IMO if just for better battery life and FP scanner, but I'll prolly go OP or Samsung to replace my 2 XL this year.

The 4a is definitely on my short list right now. Honestly, I might not even upgrade seeing as my 3a is running like a champ. The 3a made me not even entertain the idea of picking up a 4 when it came out. I've bought the new Pixel each year since the OG Pixel (actually before then with the Nexus 5X). The only other phone I'd be interested in at this point is the S11e or whatever it will be called. OP is still iffy with my Verizon MVNO. I have to jump through hoops to get "CDMA-less" enabled on my account before it will work and 90% of the customer service people say they can't do it.

If the 4a had a wide angle lens, it would pretty much be the perfect phone for me too. It still baffles me as to why Google isn't putting them on their phones when literally everyone else is. The panoramas on my 2 XL leave a lot to be desired. I'm just traveling a lot now and taking a lot of scenic shots that the normal camera can't even begin to encompass, esp. in more crowded areas where you simply don't have room to get a whole building or subject in the shot.

Looks like Verizon may be dropping the Pixel line from their store.

Maybe they'll get serious about hardware now and stop cutting corners in design, specs, and features, or at least price their phones appropriately if they don't improve all of that.
Yeah, maybe they can finally pull their heads out of their asses. Honestly though, I thought the Pixel 4 XL was a great phone overall, but the continued massive neglect of video on the phone made me switch back to the iPhone again. They even showcased their video as a selling point on their website ... and even with professional videographers using their phones to try and show it off, the quality was still choppy, laggy, hot garbage. The lag is something I will never understand because I had the Note 10+ as well and the video was buttery smooth. Not to mention the fact that literally every other flagship now can shoot 40K 60 FPS except for the Pixel ... and their excuse is that their top end storage of 128 GB just isn't enough storage for that option. Here's an idea ... how about stop selling 128 GB as a max storage option when every other flagship has four times that storage? Why Google thinks they can get away with selling a mediocre-specced phone when everyone else is crushing them for the same price is beyond me. You'd think Google would want to showcase their technical prowess ... but all they're doing is just showing off their greed. They have a fuggin' quantum computer they get to play around and yet they can't make a phone that can take smooth video. Their priorities are all over the place.

People are mostly followers. Google thought they could be like Apple and only sell phones through one carrier. Unfortunately, when Apple did that, that was the early days of smartphones. Now that smartphones are everywhere, not many would buy Pixels because they hardly see anyone else carrying a Pixel and they did that for 3.5 years. This year for the Pixel 4 was the first year where Verizon had a few months of exclusivity and then other carriers could sell it. But the Pixel 4 was a complete disaster, while Pixel 4 XL is just decent but priced way too high. Apple’s pricing the iPhone 11 at $699 is absolutely a game changer. Pixel 4 XL now at $500 at T-Mobile is still a tough sale because the OnePlus 7T with more storage and RAM is the same price.

Then let’s talk about that radar shit google included. The demo given a year before that radar tech looked amazing. It had finger tracking. What the hell happened? Why Google fucked with it? it’s just a hand motion tracking that a couple of infrared sensors could easily detect as well. Why the radar? Most reviews I saw recommend people to disable it because it inconsistently worked and is a battery drainer, which leads to why the regular pixel 4 is a complete disaster - the battery life is shitty even with lots of things disabled. It’s the most returned phone right now. Pixel 4XL is only decent because of the bigger battery.

I'm at the point where I've given up on the Pixel line and am hunting for something else. They simply don't seem committed to anything except the camera, yet the pricing is on par with phones that are a full tech generation ahead. I hate that I'll be losing the lean Android experience, but I figure I'm enough of a tinkerer to hide/disable enough bloatware to mostly mimic it.

The fact that everyone else has caught up to night mode and photo quality, especially Apple, it doesn’t really leave much to be desired in regards to the Pixel line ... and since photos seems to be the only thing Google cares about, it’s all a bit meh.

I will say though, Face unlock + Motion Sense was my favorite thing about the Pixel. It’s the best unlocking experience of any phone I’ve ever had.

I've never used the face unlock functionality, but a friend of mine that has a 4XL swears by it, too. In general he likes the phone, but he laments the price (which has dropped a ton since he bought it) and the awful battery life.

I'm on the verge of getting one of those new Samsungs. That's assuming those non-root Pixel launchers still work and I can still disable/hide/replace their clunky ass software.
