Tesla Unveils Radical Cybertruck.

I like how the guy gave everything he had when hitting the door on the left with the sledgehammer and barely swung it when he hit this monstrosity. Apparently they tried that beforehand, unlike the window test.
 
I agree the styling is radical, and I don’t care for it, but consider a few details. I’ll try to explain the best I can.

A more conventional bed and cab design would work fine for a body-on-frame. Tesla went for a unibody, and so the side stampings would have to be larger, near the bed and rear door area for strength and crash protection. The bed cover slides forward into the roof line of the cab, while taking advantage of the larger body stampings. The flat dull exterior styling is the limitation of using high-strength stainless-steel for the panels. Formability with the alloy is poor for complex curves. Tesla is saving money for minimal amount of tool and die sets required for the project overall.

I do wonder who the vendor is for the stainless-steel. Starship is using typical 301 SS alloy from the Outokumpu plant in Alabama.
 
I'd buy it, if I suddenly had a need to own a pickup. I bought a Scion XB second-gen, and had a good time in my van/Camry hybrid.

And I think you're right EngrChris, the design is simple for cost savings, and they may be able to add curvier surfaces on the next model (after they learn what these things cost to tweak).

I doubt it. This appears to be very thick and strong Stainless. I don't think it's practical to stamp curved panels in this steel at all. This is flat + simple bends.

Delorean is VERY thin stainless, and isn't strucutural.

Here it's thick structure of stainless.

Thing about throwing something spherical at a flat object, the moment that the ball bearing hit the glass had to generate an incredible amount of force at the point of contact, much more than anything they probably previously threw at it.

Other than that, awesome design!

Hipsters and housewives? But so many people are insisting it's ugly as sin - why would housewives go near it? Something doesn't square. Do you mean in the sense it's like Hummer 2.0?

I know why I want one, but then I've always avoided status symbol, expression-of-insecurity cars. And its precisely because it looks unfinished, unpainted and monolithic on the exterior - almost like some hobbyist's garage project, while having full self driving and the latest flash-upgradable advancements on the interior. A minimalist steel slab with insane 2.9s 0-60.

It's a Tesla. That's why. That's all that matters to most people buying it.

Cybertruck. First in the new C-R-A-P line of products. Actually, they should have called it Ubertruck,but there's at least one company that wouldn't like that. Then they could simply spell out U-G-L-Y (noting that Y is a problem currently for the Tesla line).

(I'm not anti-Tesla, simply going for humor points... you have to admit, that's one ugly beast)
 
It looks just like the 80’s told me vehicles in 2020 would look.... so 8 year old me just creamed his pants...

Yall are a bunch of haters. Atleast it doesnt look like a guppy fish so many other trucks have looked like for decades. I think it looks awesome! Plus 0-60 in 2.9 seconds? That's amazing. Although I wouldn't be able to afford that model. But the mid tier model, Im thinking it over seriously.
 
^^If they made high efficiency panels and option for all those flat panels especially the top, now that could be one zombie apocalypse ready vehicle. Ofc, it could take days of sunshine to get a charge but that's enough to get you places.

Apparently there is a solar option, providing up to 15 miles range per day.

I'll take one for the zombie apocalypse. You can always throw a generator that runs the fuel of your choice in the bed. Not to power it while running, but you can run the generator to charge while stopped.

Shit i am happy with the 300 mile range. If you are on a long drive, do you not take brakes to chill? lol. I am sure you can take an hour brake after 5 hours of driving and charge this puppy up or charge it up half way with shorter brake. There is nothing out there with that much range for electric. Oh wait you are not buying anyways. That 500 mile range is probably bigger than those gas SUVs with a full tank.

Yea, 500 miles is insanely huge. People have made cannonball runs with less range.

I thought the same but I would call it different. This is out of the box, its a truck and radical design by them. I wouldn't mind picking up one of the ones with 300 mile range for work commute and back. I am seriously thinking getting one down the road since I am looking at trucks anyways, and by then I will probably have my BMW paid off. So might make sense. I put a benjamin down for the fuck of it, got two years to decide ROFL!

They probably don't want it charging while driving. My be too much safety risk lol. Imagine shit frying everyone inside hahaha.

Plus I don't think this is the final design yet. Thing is 2 years out. No mirrors and you can't have straight lights in the front and no blinkers yet I think. Also safety test regulations have to be addressed and it has to absorb and deflect the vehicle in crash, so we will see. I think we will likely see design changes before launch. May be that is why they didn't ask for much in deposit. I put down a 100 for the hell of it, to be on the waiting list in case I like it lol.

Not sure what regenerative breaking is. I was talking about the old light systems on bicycles where the motion of the wheels generates electricity to run a headlight. Instead using the energy to run a headlight, on a car or truck the motion of the wheels connected to generators would charge the battery while moving.
