Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Could be related to the difficulty setting or maybe related to the timing I'm using, but I'm finding dodge to be ineffective compared to parrying. It works on some enemies (like the large enemy in the ice cave), but with most enemies I find myself forced to parry instead. It's a lot like Sekiro in that regard. The dodge + roll distance isn't that great and the parry timing is loose. I find myself rarely blocking and using the leaping strong force attack quite a bit.

On the performance end of things, turning shadows and post processing to "high" seemed to help my performance enough to keep me over 60fps.

Keep on rolling. If it takes twice or more to get out of harms way, that will work. You basically turn your jedi into Sonic the Hedgehog and roll in and out of combat. I made it through the entire game with this tactic. Parry doesn't even effectively work in close combat with many melee enemies. The way I look at it is it is better to completely avoid contact than to be hit. That tends to work well until you dodge off a cliff ;)

The graphics are cool but I wasn't expecting it to be a Tomb Raider / Uncharted wall climbing-fest that it is. That and the way the controls are slightly off kilter (using M+KB) by a split second is off-putting when you are used to FPS type reaction speed. I'm going to have to see if using my Xbox 1x controller on it will work / work better.

i must say the game runs smoothly at 1440p with max details, for graphical fidelity it delivers i must say its quite decent. || I'll likely runs some tests later this week or weekend.

// In terms of the game,
It looks like, feels like its 1313 just with lightsabers. Some assets, and even scene design are very much alike. I'd guess they redesigned the 1313 to run with lightsabers, instead and upped the graphics. 1313 emitting blaster lights look almost the same like lightsaber light..

Character design (just after playing first mission - not a full knowledge of the game yet)

The main character design...
I do not necessarily like it. I feel he's too young, somehow his face and hair don't seem right - for whatever the reason. I think the character originally had blonde hair, and blue eyes - and those were changed... I personally think the character would look much better with black raven hair, and blue/violet/green eyes. || then lets move to his facial features mouth and nose... There's something not right there. I can't put my finger around it.

Other characters
The black lady that lives in the ship.
Are we playing wolfenstein? Cause thats what i see every goddamn time i see this model... Shit man. Breaks immersion/mood the fck out of me.
Not to mention this actress (doesn't look that bad in real life - i think?) the models both used in wolf and in here have eye sockets almost falling out and mouth too low to keep proportions right... then she's to damn skinny... i mean look at that model, skin and bones... no breasts, no booty, nothing to look at - as if she had cancer chemo ongoing... its just her face which doesn't look good in the game.
The sith inquisitor has nicer body, i wish i could just join that inquisitor instead for the booty. (srsly wtf is wrong with giving female characters some dignity adding some breasts -- even teen ahsoka from animations had bigger than this character.)

i mean srsly is that what ppl like today? (into traps or underage not yet developed girls?)

i mean look sith inquisitor doesn't have much, but has more - it had enough if you are into flat girls. She got the curves and all.

1313 was an Unreal Engine Game in development. Fallen Order is an Unreal Engine Game. That, alone, would explain why much of it looks similar.

If it were truly 1313, it would have a cover based mechanic that is completely absent in this game.

It may have imported elements from 1313, however, the core game wasn't designed (originally) as a Star Wars game. EA approached Respawn and asked them if they could convert their game concept into a Star Wars Story.

I don't have an issue with the main character. His age is about right for a 11-13 year old kid that survived Order 66 and has been in hiding the past 5 years. The time frame is set shortly after the Clone Wars wrapped up. This also explains why you encounter a LOT of Clone Wars era Tech. I am guessing he's supposed to look 18, and the character is actually based on a real life actor.

You are entitled to your own opinions, naturally, but your take on things seems overly nit picky and critical for a pretty great game that none of us really expected.

There's something about how you present things that bothers me. I think it has more to do with how you view people and it shows in your commentary. Given your commentary, perhaps you haven't encountered the 9th sister yet... She's got more of what you're looking for.

as I mentioned i only played first mission itself. Rest is waiting.

How I view people? If I get characters that looks, and feels like a character from wolfenstein - you ask me to be ok with that? - while they got proportions wrong in some scenes | the actual actress looks much better than this. Imagine blazkowitz or doomguy appearing in harry potter game, you would love this right? cause thats what it is here... IF you use real actors, make sure they are not currently utilized in other games...

Well, apparently I haven't played all the games you have to realize they just stole a model from a bethesda game... I, clearly, don't have the same issues you have with this game.

Stealing is a bit, wrong word here. They should have not hired this actress to give her face to this character mainly because its utilized as one of the main characters in different game (in this case wolfenstein) | you can't "steal" real persons face, as she was hired for both games - Its EA that should know better. I personally think Brandy Norwood or Regina Hall would fit it much better, and bring more faces into games --

i.e. Dbera Wilson in just this year had her likeness in 4 games...

That is a such a ridiculous complaint. How is it any different from the same actor or actress being used in different movies? Are you saying that no studio can ever use the same actor or actress after another one has because that is fucking stupid.

This post creeps me out, ngl.

My biggest complaint are all the new alien races that just appear out of nowhere. I've been watching & playing star wars games for 30 years and the game introduces 2 or 3 new alien races I've never seen before in the first 5 minutes. I guess that's ok just kind of annoying they've never appeared before. Although there are so many in the universe, maybe they existed before and I just don't remember them.

Also I thought the black lady on the ship was an alien when she first appeared. Doesn't surprise me anymore, with modern media (including Battlefront 2's campaign, btw) I fully expect unnecessary diversity hires in main roles now.

I don't follow this kind of logic. If you had it your way and there were never any "unnecessary diversity hires" wouldn't there just never be any black people in your games?

It's not my logic, it's their's. You have PR people explicitly talking about hiring to increase representation of women, minorities, LGBT, etc, in TV, games, and movies. It's reached the point now where I question whether any non-white/non-straight/non-male was hired for the sake of diversity, regardless if that actor was right for the role. I feel this way because the media has told me they're doing it... Intentionally.

So was this woman the exact actor they wanted to fit the character? Or was she hired because she's a black woman? We'll never know.

If this game had come out 10 or 20 years ago I wouldn't have noticed anything, like Lando, for example.

This shit is being brought up again? Fucking Christ.

I've noticed a lot of bullshit going on in this thread over the last few posts. I just finished the campaign, so lets get down to it.

I don't have the time to due my normal novel of a post about the game. The characters are pretty good and generally realistically modeled. No, Ceres (the black woman) won't win any beauty contests, but there isn't a romance sub-lot with her so who cares? Nothing about her skin color or appearance is an issue in the game at all. She's just a working class individual with a past. She's also a bit older as well. There was a complaint about new aliens. WTF? Why would you ever complain about that? Virtually every single new Star Wars game or film ever made introduces a new species. Why should this one be different and why is this a problem? The character is ultimately good. He's got an arc and shows growth and improvement. He's better than anything we've seen in the recent films.

There are two more characters to talk about in relation to the posts above. First, is the Nightsister. She's actually pretty attractive but not overly so. She's also not dressed to be sexy. Again, no romantic sub-plot so there is that. She does mention having had an attraction to a female childhood friend killed by the Separatists in the Clone Wars. She doesn't explicitly state she's a lesbian, but she's either that or bisexual. Ordinarily, the mention of this would be something I'd label os obvious SJW agenda pushing except that the way it was brought up in conversation was fairly organic and not really forced. It's also the one example of a LGBTQ whatever diversity check box I could find. I'd even call that something of a stretch. I've seen people bring this subject up far more awkwardly in real life. I'd also state that being a Nightsister, her attraction to females wouldn't be surprising given that they only think of men as muscle and breeding stock. Nightbrothers live separately and ultimately, do whatever the women tell them to do.

You can see this all the way back in the Clone Wars TV show before all this SJW crap was everywhere. She does have an accent, but being from Dathomir, she's not white. She's a near human like the rest of the Nightsisters have been. She's a pretty good character despite not being a major part of the game.

The last one is the 2nd sister. Despite her outfit being largely something you couldn't really sexualize, she's actually attractive. You can see her curves and overall form. Though the tunic / jacket thing she wears isn't designed to be sexual and it looks like she's wearing a sports bra. Given what she does all day, this isn't unreasonable. She's also of average build so there is no reason to expect her to have massive breasts beyond its what we are used to seeing in video games. What we have here are more less idealized versions of people. Young, reasonably good looking (Ceres not withstanding) and that's it. She's one of the best and most fleshed out characters in the story. She has a genuine arc and you come to understand what motivates her and why she's an inquisitor.

Ultimately, the game's gameplay mechanics are nothing unique. They are pulled from a variety of sources and remind me of Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver, Uncharted and Dark Souls. The mechanics are competently executed and don't really ever frustrate you, but keep you challenged enough to keep you engaged in what you are doing. The graphics are stunning on PC and the locations feel like actual places in the Star Wars universe. While the second planet you go to feels a bit contrived, it was obviously designed to prevent just anyone from reaching the temple on foot guarding its secrets. Only a Force user would be able to do it easily. Or someone with a jet pack, but those may not have been a thing when the race built the tombs. In any case, other levels mask the mechanics more naturally for the most part. The levels are sprawling but not too large. There is plenty of freedom to explore and rewards for doing so. Levels have massive verticality to them. You have a few things to shake up the game play as well from driving an AT-AT briefly to swimming sections. None of these feel particularly contrived, forced or immersion breaking. They make sense of the most part and are fun to do.

Boss fights are amazing. They are some of the most cinematic things I've ever done in a game while still leaving you in control most of the time. Bosses change tactics throughout the encounter and defeating one feels immensely satisfying. Cal's skills as you progress show improvement as he gains experience. The force powers are kept simple. They are more in line with what we've seen in the films rather than being the crazy power fantasy we saw in the Force Unleashed. You are occasionally wanting a bit more, but what you have is effective, powerful and fun. Combat is challenging on higher difficulties and AI works pretty well for the most part. You are punished for failure, so that's something to keep in mind.

The narrative is where the game really shines. The story isn't wholly original by any means. Fans of the Clone Wars TV show will actually recognize the basic plot from an episode of that. The game's narrative does a very good job of taking that same basic plot and making it it's own. The story is generally well thought out with only a couple of plot holes which I mentioned earlier which center on the first mission.

Despite one or two things the presentation is superb, the game and story are well paced. The characters are actually really good given how little dialog you have with them compared to something like a Mass Effect game. Cal himself is rather generic, but this could be an intentional design decision like it is with Gordon Freeman or the Master Chief. Although, the fact that the character can't be customized beyond some clothing and the lightsaber suggest otherwise. Cal is serviceable and even likable for the most part, but we only get a few glimpses into what makes him tick and what motivates him. Most characters grow and have arcs of their own adding to the story, without overshadowing story elements and for the most part, Cal himself. None of its very deep or anything, but it works nicely. There are several surprises here that I won't spoil, but the game does a great job at keeping you on your toes. Especially at the end.

The game is very well polished. I encountered no problems with stability, odd clipping issues or technical issues to speak of. I did see one or two clipping problems and a couple graphic issues where you could see through part of a corner or something like that. These are extremely minor compared to the size of the game and its locations. I did encounter one FPS slowdown that was very drastic which I couldn't recreate. I also noticed stuttering once in a blue moon. Some people have reported a bunch of these problems online, but I didn't.

The game isn't perfect by any means. The game draws a lot of comparisons with the Force Unleashed. I'm not sure that's what I'd do but Jedi Fallen Order is without a doubt the best single player Star Wars experience we've gotten since The Force Unleashed all those years ago. I won't tell you how to spend your money, but I think its worth supporting just to show EA and other developers that there is still a market for good single player games. This is also the type of thing EA should have been doing with its Star Wars license from Disney. It's hard to believe that this one made it after 1313 and the unnamed game from the Uncharted developer were both cancelled. I for one would have payed full price to show EA that I want more of this and because I felt it was worth it. There are people who won't buy it at full price for whatever arbitrary reason they can think of and that's fine. But I would definitely recommend the game if what I've said appeals to you.

Dan, that's a fantastic review. I'm happy to see someone who appreciated the game and the story as much as I did!

If it is anything like the PS4 Pro version, than probably not. The timing often feels "off" or laggy to me. It has been called out in a couple reviews I've seen.

The Uncharted elements of this game, particularly the sliding, drive me nuts. The controls are either way too sensitive, or not enough. Then when you fly off the edge, they respawn you facing the wrong way (in some areas). This is the most frequently sworn at aspect of my play time thus far.

I haven’t run into either issue on the PC. Any time I’ve messed up a slide it’s always felt like my fault and I’ve always been faced the right way for any ledge respawn. Can’t say I’ve flow off the side of a slide yet either but I am only working on my third planet so maybe some of the later ones will get me.

The big thing I’ve found that bothers me is enemies giving no recovery time so sometimes if you are hit once they will be able to get one or two more attacks in before you are able to dodge or block.

I'm going to have to see if using my Xbox 1x controller on it will work / work better.

I switched to an XBOX One controller very early on in my playthough. It made the game much easier. I'm not normally someone who plays third person or any game with a controller, but things like dodging were much easier with the game pad.

The slide that gave me the most trouble was on Datomir (sp? Red planet). It would spawn me facing about 100 degrees to my right, right before a corner + jump. It was infuriating.

Saw a good video covering each Boss fight on Grandmaster, without taking any hits. Guy made it look easy, naturally. Show cased some good techniques though.

CAUTION: SPOILERS. This video covers each major Boss, in order, and does have Spoilers for the end Boss, so only watch what you are comfortable with:

The jumping definitely doesn't work perfectly. I'm finding that jumping early (rather than late) when going for distance/height works better. It doesn't make any sense, but I've tested it out on a couple tough jumps. The game gives you a weird little boost and shows the "grab" prompt when you jump from a specific distance. With most jumps it doesn't matter, but with a few it's really picky. If there's any doubt, jump early rather than late.
I, luckily, haven't been killed as a result, but I've gotten pretty close. Can you recover your XP if you die from falling?

Yeah, I think you just have to reach the same point. There is also a fair amount of leeway that the game gives you with falling (or at least that was my experience). I do agree with jumping difficulties... I did feel a little clumsy for a Jedi.

Well...That explains my issues with combat. Might have to try locking my fps to 60 and see what happens.
I was playing in the 60 Hz at 4K range. I think the game was directly ported from a Console version that was designed to run at 30 FPS. I will have to drop the FPS to 30 and give it a whirl. Might have to play the entire game again if I start kicking ass in lightsaber combat.

Looks like parry timing might be tied to fps.

Hmm...

upload_2019-11-20_16-15-45.png

If the parry timing window is 133.33333333333333 ms at 30 FPS on Grand Master then that would equal a 4 frame window. If the parry window is based on number of frames, then it would be:

66.6667 ms at 60 FPS
40.8163 ms at 98 FPS
33.3333 ms at 120 FPS
27.7778 ms at 144 FPS
24.2424 ms at 165 FPS
16.6667 ms at 240 FPS

I guess if you need the game to be harder :ROFLMAO:.

I'm at 60fps and still find the parry timing to be very loose compared to Dark Souls and Bloodborne. It's pretty similar to Sekiro's timing, hence it's what I'm using like 90% of the time. It's tough (for me) to time large creatures, but it's a breeze with troopers and humanoids.

I was running through Kashyyk to get back to my ship when all of a sudden 2 bounty hunter looking guys attacked me, they had an HP bar at the top of the screen so it was a boss fight for sure. I was out of stims so I went back to the med point to save, when I came back they were gone.

I googled some boss lists and they are not on ANY of them. wtf happened? :/
Already tried exiting to menu and back, nothing spawned still.

They show up at random.

What do you mean what happened - you ran away. Like a bitch!

If true, this is a HUGE failure on EA/Respawn's part, for a game that requires precise timing for parries.

I think the Red Dead Redemption 2 port did/does have a similar issue with refresh rate and timing. Specifically the stamina drain.

Ports, man.
