Red Dead Redemption 2

Is it just me, or does it seem like performance goes down the shitter if you re-load a save?

Could be. GTAV exhibited the same exact problem early in its PC life. Poor memory management or simply overlooking something that needed cleaning up when loading a save.

I just discovered you can fix the FPS drop on save game re-load by going into the graphics options, choosing a setting like TAA, and just flipping it between settings. This seems to restart something in the engine, and performance returns to normal.

Just curious is everyone mostly playing online or story? So far I’m really enjoying the story of the game. It really is done quite well!

Online here, I already played the story on xbox one x. I've put in a good amount of hours and it is night and day difference between Red Dead Online and GTA online when it comes to peacefully coexisting with other players. There is defensive mode which makes you tougher if someone decides to attack you. If you attack another player unprovoked it will disable defensive mode. Also you can't see other players on the map unless you are close to them, unless a player has a high hostility rating and then you can see them farther away. Almost all encounters I've had were completely peaceful, but the pvp is still there if someone wants a bit of that from time to time.

This game looks great and between my own configuring and finding info like what's in this thread I've dialed in settings that I think look nice and give good enough performance. That being said, Red Dead is the first game in quite a while that is really making me want to upgrade to get more frames and even better visuals.

Here are some screenshots from my time in the online.

While I prefer singleplayer; I agree that the online in this game is FAR better than in GTAV. GTAV was just constant chaos, terrible loading times, and really there wasn't all that much to do outside the missions.

In RDR2's online you can just ride around and hunt together, play some poker, etc.

I still prefer just playing singleplayer because everything just works together better, and many features in the singleplayer have been turned off in the multiplayer. However, it's at least an option.

It remains to be seen if this game will be hack-free in the online, unlike GTAV. I believe it stands a better chance, because Rockstar does a lot of weird things when this game gets launched - Which is part of the reason why the launcher crashes on so many systems.

RDO has a better load times / transitions, more interesting open world, more character progression, and less griefers/trolls. GTAO has way more content, especially structured activities. You can just look at the activity menus in both games and see the difference. RDO has a heavy focus on PVP and character improvement, the open world and PvE content solely exists to buff your character. The only thing you can actually do is grind that progression and then do PvP matches. I played for about 10 hours and got bored. Meanwhile I have over 500 hours in GTAO. Once I finish up the RDR2 SP I will not be going back to RDO.

Has RDO even had any content patches in the last year since it's been out? Does RDO have player properties? Heists? Does it have any group missions that aren't PVP matches?
There's just not enough to do, and it just seems like a lot of grinding for no real reason. Like what are you supposed to do with a lvl 100+ character? I saw a guy on Reddit who played 8 hours a day, grinding Collector items, and hit lvl 100 yesterday. But why? lol

GTAO was a grind, but there were tons of things to work towards. Tons of different activities to keep yourself occupied. In RDO, you buy new guns and upgrade your horse, I guess. It's the open world fluff from RDR2's single player, but minus all the substance that's supposed to go with it.

I'm finding that the performance drop bug that seems to always happen when loading a save game, seems to happen pretty regular when you put your character to sleep and the game re-loads forward in time. Luckily, toggling a graphics setting seems to fix it, but it's still pretty annoying.

The online component of the game has far exceeded my expectations. I'm really impressed... only one person was griefing me so far, and the bounties and free roam combat system is designed to mitigate that kind of behavior, while still allowing it. It's easy enough to speed off on your horse and evade a player. It seems like chat is limited to voice chat in proximity to other players. I haven't even seen any kind of text chat.

Running in to other players has mostly been infrequent and uneventful, but I did get in to a fire fight with two players North of Rhodes last night, but I think I spooked them because I shot a pheasant nearby. And there is usually something nefarious happening in Saint Denis. Some players I ran in to were willing to do a little bit of roleplay. If you really are in to gunplay and want to FPS then the free roam events are going to be your bag over actually just roaming the map.

Now I'm hoping I can actually posse up at some point once I break through around rank 20.

It might seem kind of empty now but look at how long Rockstar has been and STILL is adding content to GTAV. I'm sure they could implement a properties system... the camps are there. Imagine, perhaps a casino steamboat like the yacht or jetliner from GTAV. Hell, put a Ford Model A in the game at least us ride around like hooligans. I'd rather not get left behind or miss out on any events. Unfortunately the PC Gaming community is still mostly a bunch of lone wolves and the profound co-op nature of the game is probably lost on us.

Someone, I think one of the Digital Foundry reps, said something about how this game will "scale in to the future." That's why I'm focusing on online instead of singleplayer. I'll save that for when I eventually have a new computer and can enjoy it with a little more splendor. A lot of "features" in singleplayer are rank-restricted in multiplayer, so I don't think I'm spoiling much of the singleplayer experience.

Copying my Reddit post:

I was able to induce the stutter bug by simply disabling 1 thread on RDR2.exe (so the game had access to 11 out of 12 threads). In the video he says they only were able to see it on 8 threads or fewer, but it could be anything less than 12.

Or if someone on a 16-thread CPU could try disabling a couple threads (but still more than 12) and see if the bug persists.

I also don't understand why they stayed at 1080p if they knew it was a CPU-related fps bug. Wouldn't it make more sense to go to a lower resolution for higher fps?

I'm not finished with the video, though.

Lol I literally just started watching the same GamersNexus video...

so maybe people should just aim for 60fps and not 180??
I'm waiting for next gen gfx cards I reckon before I play this.
And thats just so I can get 60fps lol (with ultra quality at UHD).

I also think it's pretty funny that Intel CPUs break the game because they are TOO fast. :p

I keep telling myself I'm going to swear off AMD on my next build and finally join the Intel Club, but damn if those little slabs of silicon and aluminum the AMD team have put together haven't served me (and my wallet) so well. When you're looking at literally hundreds of dollars of difference in cost for similarly spec'd CPUs, it definitely makes you pause.

But also hearing that the AMD procs aren't even fast enough to reproduce the issue also is a tasty bit of info.

I havent noticed much issues with the exception that it seems like my FPS is capped at 60 fps. V-sync is turned off but i'm pretty sure something is holding it back.

This game has a old setting where Intel chips are so fast they make it go out of wack.

The 'too fast' bug i'm not sure why it really matters at this point. No one within reason is going to get high enough FPS assuming they want higher graphics options for this bug to happen.

Additionally, this is not the type of game where having 60+ FPS really matters. It's not a twitchy FPS. So just crank up the settings and it will be very difficult to hit 100+ FPS at any modern resolution anyways.

Steve sorta mentioned it but the bug exists at lower fps as well, People with 4670K's and such are getting stutters. It just happens less frequently the lower your fps is.

you using dx12 or vulkan?
Vulkan.

I noticed Nvidia released a new driver and there's 2 fixes for RDR2 that might help others.

[Red Dead Redemption 2][Vulkan][Maxwell GPUs]: Geometry corruption occurs on some Maxwell GPUs. [2744709]
[Red Dead Redemption 2][Vulkan]: G-SYNC disengages when disabling V-Sync on the game. [2740479]

And GTA V is still crashing even though they said they're aware of it and working on it for months now.

load those new drivers and see what happens. also make sure you are in real full screen mode.

Admirable goal. I gotta say though, after watching the digital foundry video and understanding exactly what I'm getting out of the high+ options, I dialed in to more or less matching their X Box One X lock, so Ultra textures and mostly low and some medium. I bumped a couple of the PC friendly settings like Mirror Quality and Tessellation. Getting around 50 fps outside towns and about 35-40 in them, feeling smoother than before for sure. I'm hooked to playing online, so I want all the extra fps I can get. And it still looks damn great even at low settings.

I think 1080p will be the standard for a little while longer but I am starting to see why 4k is the buzz. You can only get so sharp of a picture with 1080p, no matter how hard you bump the settings.

Since I'm on a Maxwell GPU, I'll write back here later if I notice any improvements with those new drivers.

I haven't changed a single thing since yesterday but when I went to run the Benchmark today the game just closed out...

Rolling back to Geforce driver 441.12, I didn't notice any real geometry corruption before and I didn't notice anything different now

I just upgraded from a 1080ti to a 2080 Super and went from 61 FPS to 80 FPS on the same settings at 1440p that I was using before. I should be able to use v-sync now and not drop below 60 anymore but we'll see. And yes I know that overall a 2080 Super is hardly much faster than a 1080 TI in most games but in this one and Control it's a decent Improvement.

Look to upgrade your monitor so you can enjoy G-Sync!

It's not the magical cure all that some people like to make it out to be. I have used about monitors that had it and always came across a few games that had issues and actually ended up running better with just regular vsync. Most issues get patched or fixed but then there's always other games that end up having problems. I know some people delude themselves and think that technologies like that always work perfect but they don't. And the monitor I'm using now is G sync compatible but the only way to use it is with the overdrive setting on which causes a little bit of of trailing.

Actual g-sync works outstanding assuming it's pretty much any modern title that doesn't have the issue like with Skyrim where it needs to be running a fixed refresh of no greater than 60hz, or the entire engine breaks.

G-Sync, in this game for instance, works amazing as it's allowing me to play @ 4k with all high settings, no tearing, and still have the responsiveness at sub 60 FPS frame rates that you normally wouldn't get if you didn't have g-sync and were having to run with some form of v-sync.

Seriously, the only games that i've experienced that 'run better without g-sync' are basically the older Bethesda Gamebryo engine titles like Fallout 3 / Skyrim. That's literally it. Everything else in every case has ran substantially better with g-sync.

Even the driver that came out today fixed an issue with g-sync In this very game...

But yes overall it is a good solution but to me it wasn't worth fooling with in my experience.

It's the memory bandwidth. The 2080 has substantially higher memory bandwidth, which in a game like this, helps out a lot.
