Red Dead Redemption 2

Boy, turning up the resolution scale and MSAA totally transforms the graphics. Looks like a totally different game.

Sharpens up all the foliage and clears up the god awful muddy textures. TAA is to blame for most of that, tho.

Controllers are never better in terms of aiming speed...but they can certainly be more straightforward and simply easier to use. I'd rather use a controller for literally everything except twitch shooters and RTS games.
One thing modern game controllers "have" that KBM "have not" are analog movement (specifically the left analog stick functionality). Even if you can get a game to support something like a Wooting One, it's still not the same thing. And all the gaming keypads with analog thumbsticks I've tried are really awkward to use for movement.

I would argue that analog movement adds more to the immersion.

Even the analog triggers on a gamepad add to the immersion of any game that lets you "squeeze the trigger". A light squeeze to turn on a gun's laser sight? That shit is the bomb.

Certainly, I prefer a mouse for aiming compared to right analog stick. So they both have their pros and cons.

For some odd reason... it's downloading again... I thought the game finished preloading Tuesday. I fired up the launcher and RDR2 starts decrypting... great, awesome, I walk away for a sec, come back and it's no longer decrypting, it's pre-loading. Currently at 51GB :banghead:

Silly question, anybody know if there's a way to shoulder your rifle/shotguns instead of just carrying them in your left hand? It looks really dumb.
They start on your back, but then if you draw them, your character holds them in his left hand when you holster.

Hmmm, I have been debating running without HDR since it elevates blacks and makes nights too bright - might use that fancy new Nvidia sharpening tool and use TAA since it has a lot lower performance hit than MSAA.

Not sure what the button is on controller, but TAB will holster any weapon you're carrying on KB.

on second thought... forgot to update to Bios micro code 1004... I’ll try that

Yeah, you'll be playing the launcher failed to initialize game until you update your bios.

God forbid Rockstar capitulate and remove the DRM crap from the launcher causing this issue and just letting people play the game they purchased.

must really suck for the people who aren’t able to update the bios yet, thankfully MSI has it out. Do we/they know exactly what the micro-code update and Ryzen has to do with the error?

must really suck for the people who aren’t able to update yet... hopefully Rockstar gets this fixed soon.

That's what I get for getting an X470 board and not a B450 board. I paid more money for worse support from MSI. MSI states that the updated BIOS's for the X470 boards won't be out until the end of the month. So if rockstar doesn't help us out, we're pretty much unable to play the game for a month.

Well, looks like I complained enough, my boards updated bios was just posted. Praise be.

what is it about Ryzen that’s causing the issue and requires 1004?

PG27UQ, using Game mode with peak brightness set to 900 and paper white set to 80. They got rid of the brightness cap from cinematic mode, but the problem is that they're still applying both an SDR gamma ramp and warmth mask to the image. So instead of having localized bright spots you get an image that makes the surrounding environment overly bright. This video goes into depth explaining the problem.

Keyboard and mouse for every game that requires free aiming, no exceptions. There is literally no difference between first person aiming and third person aiming, so I don't understand why people believe a controller would be better for the latter.

Arm or anyone else know why I can only run HDR using the Vulkan API? I heard DX12 runs a little smoother and I enabled it and restarted even rebooted my PC. But with DX12, The HDR tabs are gone in the display settings? Kinda odd. Restoring Vulkan and the HDR tabs return? i'm not stupid right thinking that DX12 has to support HDR or is it because I don't have HDR enabled in Windows 10??

No clue as AMD hasn't made any comments, probably because they fixed the bug with the 1004 microcode update already, it's just motherboard vendors that take a while to integrate it into an actual BIOS package.

But if you are running a Zen CPU and are on the 1003 AEGSA the launcher while crash, period. So either you've got to roll back if possible, or hope you have a 1004 BIOS available.

I just played through the entire intro without any issues, so it was absolutely the BIOS problem for me.

Runs and looks great on my 3900x/2080ti system @ 4k HDR.

It is very likely that it is because you don't have it enabled in windows. Most games that use DX12 are dependent on that option being enabled to utilize HDR.

Glad to hear you got this up and running man.

Post some 4k screenshots when you can.

^ I figured it out. Select "Unarmed" as your weapon and you'll put the gun away. If you have a gun in your hand you have to tap it twice.
Simply holstering your active gun doesn't do it.

I have a 9600K machine 5Ghz was excited to try RDR2 out on.... until I watched this new video. Damn the 4-6 C/T cpu's get hit hard, but I guess maybe? that's to be expected since the game was built around consoles with 8 cores. I still have to install the BIOS update on my 3700x rig, I'll get around to it tonight.

All non HT cpus have stuttering issues at the moment. Including the 9700K, even the old 2600K has better mins.

Similar issue happened in far cry 5.

Here are two screens showing just how bad TAA looks at 1080p. It smudges the entire picture, especially while moving (notice I am walking in these photos).

I know you’re trying to highlight a bad graphics setting, but since I’m still in the snow area all I think when I see those is ‘damn I can’t wait to get out of the mountains and explore this game’ :D

This is why controller and mouse is a thing ;).

Microsoft is enforcing a new standard in DX12 that requires the HDR setting in the Windows Display Settings to be enabled. It's the same way in Gears 5 and Modern Warfare. It actually has solved the issue I would sometimes get of a game just refusing to go into HDR. I've even had a Microsoft game (Horizon 4) simply toggle the global HDR setting instead of checking its state, resulting in the option I had enabled being disabled when the game started.

Satchel capacity seems kind of ridiculous, especially considering how realistic the rest of the game is. I'm carrying 100+ consumables all at once...

Also call me lazy, but I wrote an autohotkey script to automatically chamber rounds while shooting. :p

Sadly, controller + mouse doesn't work as well as it should. Many/most games don't let you re-map gamepad controls and at least a few games don't play nice when you try to use both. Mainly thanks to games having a different UI (and onscreen prompts) for pads.
Back in the Quake 1-3 days I was hell on wheels with my MS Sidewinder pad and a mouse.

Watch Dogs 2 was the start of making quad cores irrelevant, it lead me to moving to Ryzen... I picked up a 1600 and dumped as soon as 2700xs came down in price.

Knowing this game was coming out, and the trend of consoles in general, is why I went 3900x and not Intel this time around. The core counts are going to matter more and more.

I don't want to sound mean but.. Severe lack of reading comprehension here.

I may have to try this.

However, can someone enlighten me on why even do this?

What's the real benefit if you have a 1440p monitor versus increased res scale on a 1080p?

It would be the same performance, no?

Just to clear this up, at 1080p, "2.00" res scale in the game is equal to 4K (I checked) so it's both dimensions, ie: twice the X and twice the Y resolution.

So 1.5 scale would be... 2880x1620. If you have a 1440p monitor your resolution is high enough you probably don't even need res scale. It could just be a shitty TAA implementation and it works a lot better with extra pixels.

FX-8350 / GTX 970 4gb checking in....

I actually just purchased the MSI GTX 970 used. I was using an EVGA GTX 960 2gb FTW, but the vram was forcing me in to "low" textures. You don't want to play this game with the low texture setting, at least I didn't. I'd almost say all the other settings are superfluous and will be fine on Medium or Low, but you need to at least have medium textures to really enjoy the experience.

My PC is sort of a miracle, I was gaming on a AMD 1090T until earlier this year - I'm locked in to the AM3+ socket on my mobo. Im staving off until I decide to get a completely new computer, probably after next summer and another round of RTX cards.

I grabbed the FX-8350 for $80 and it paved the way for... a G-Sync enabled ASUS ROG PG248q 1080p monitor. And in the months following those purchases my gaming experience was great even on the GTX 960.

The 970 I bought was $120, which in my budget is not a major expense and was justifiable. I thought about shoving a 1660Ti in there, but... bottlenecking. And Ray Tracing. The same guy also had a 1060 6g for sale for $180 but then...why wouldn't I just spend another $70 for the 1660Ti... and at that point why not suck it up and get a 2060 Super.... I wanted to spend as little as possible to clear the bar, essentially. I'm anticipating this hardware will finally say goodnight once Cyberpunk 2077 releases, but that's fine with me. Two gaming PC's are better than one anyway, right?

Anyway now I'm sitting pretty with High textures, a mix of high and medium settings, and an FPS average around 30-40, which is totally playable in this game. (Last benchmark I ran was - Min: 12fps Max: 60fps Avg:40fps) And the game is absolutely gorgeous if you take the time to find the right mix of graphics settings.

I'm using FXAA with a light amount of TAA. Yes it produces a sort of smudgy look but it's not pronounced enough to ruin my experience, and its better than seeing all those jaggies on the trees. My soft shadows are turned on, so medium shadows look pretty decent. Edit: Screenshots are pretty misleading for this title because there is LOTS of movement, literally almost everything is moving at all times: rabbits duck through the grass, trees sway, clouds move and so do the shadows and light with them. You will be really hard pressed to actually notice any kind of heavy anti-aliasing you apply.

Some might just have to accept that only the beefy-est rigs that are going to handle MSAA on this title. Such was the case when GTAV was released until the next round or two of GPUs came around.

As much as I'd love to experience a solid 60FPS experience, if even the newest hardware released this year is having trouble, then I'm totally happy with what I got for what I've spent (my PC is essentially seven years old, upgraded component by component).

If you aren't gaming on a screen syncing technology, now is the time to consider getting there. Like someone stated before, it really helps turn a choppy 30-60fps experience in to something smooth. I might dabble in the online mode, but I have no posse... I got this game for the narrative. Literally grinning ear to ear from the experience Rockstar has crafted.

And as an added bonus, now I'm probably going to see 144fps gameplay in the majority of the rest of my collection.

If you are having a hard time, start with basics, disable any secondary monitors, update drivers. Bring your settings down to low and go up from there. I feel like the benchmark is more about measuring the visual fidelity than the framerate. I feel like I haven't had any noticeable dips in to that minimum the benchmark states. I even had the average go down after lowering a setting. As is customary, for best results, restart you game after applying graphics settings. I turned off TAA once during my game and it slaughtered my fps.

The lesson here? If I had just spent the extra 120 dollars in the first place and gotten a 970 instead of the 960, I would have been set. smh, because the 4gb 960 came out maybe only a month after I got my 2gb one. And that is where I came to the conclusion to not try and spend more for the 1000 series generation, and instead save up for a new, high end computer that will actually be future-minded. In the end the math worked for me and if you are in a similar situation thinking you need a whole new computer, maybe this will indicate otherwise to you.
