Red Dead Redemption 2

Disappointing. Usually Rockstar comes out in better form than this but I expect these to be relatively short lived problems. I feel grateful this thing was brought to the PC at all. Its predecessor is still a coveted holy grail a number of us regret never made the trip. I still would play the hell out of that game now if they did a deluxe PC glory version of it.

I hope issues are fixed ASAP. Especially for a console multi-platform title, it shouldn't be too difficult for the vast majority of video cards even with higher settings.

Oh by the way, the original RDR is now playable through the RPCS3 emulator, for those so inclined. Much like other emulators (Dolphin, Cemu, Yuzu etc) , it can even render at above the original specs and/or add graphics/texture packs. This is not to say that a reasonably priced "remaster" of the original coming to PC as a "Definitive Edition" would not be a better idea.

Is there a resolution render option in the menu? Seems like a really easy 1-step tweak for the 2080Ti could be to take that to 85-90%.

Agreed. And it's probably my ignorance, but I can't understand why DSR can't work in reverse (downscaling), so each game doesn't have to code their own support for it. You set the game to 4K, and your display to 4K, and in Nvidia/AMD control panel set the GPU to dynamically downscale as needed to maintain 60FPS.

Just be glad you can even start the game if you can right now. Many folks can't even get past the stupid launcher, and the launcher just crashes when you start the game.

I'd be fine with sub-par performance and a working game at this point.

Just run the game at a lower resolution and enable the new sharpening option.

Running at a lower res than monitor's native introduces quirks of its own. I'm talking about ideal solution.

Just curious, have you disabled all overlays to rule them out, like Xbox Game Bar, Steam, Origin, Geforce Experience, etc?

It has nothing to do with any of that stuff. RDR2.exe isn't even starting. No 3D processes are even starting.

The issue is the launcher.

But yes, I have tried a clean copy of windows with absolutely nothing installed. There is something with certain hardware setup's that the launcher is failing on.

You can see the launcher is failing on something, and many users are having the same problem. It's permissions related, possibly, but again this is on a clean install of Windows. And yes, i've tried re-installing the stupid launcher.

GTAO is an amazing game which was totally ruined by long load/transition times.
I played it over 500 hours and at least half of that time was spent tabbed out.

The load times are terrible, agreed. The amount of money you get for missions versus how much stuff costs is a total joke, though. It's all designed to make you want to spend money on Shark Cards.

there is a res scale option in the game.

Yep, I was talking in general -- wishing GPU/driver would be able to do res scaling dynamically in the background so that it wouldn't fall on game developers to implement case by case, and would be more intelligent than just setting it to a static percentage. I realize it's somewhat off-topic.

I wish every game would not only have the Resolution Scale option, but feature it prominently. Hell, even offer suggestions based upon FPS targets and what GPU you have.
It's way easier to use a single slider to scale performance rather than 50 unique graphical settings. Especially since some of those don't affect performance much while others can be crippling for minimal gain.
Not everyone wants to test visual settings for hours or pore through comparison screenshots for dozens of graphical options. Obviously it's great to offer those options, but most people have no idea what most of those things do.

Ughhh.. This has not been going well so far.

I don't think any disclosure of third-party DRM has been made public because none of the stores it's on requires that disclosure. Until it releases on Steam next month we probably won't find out unless it is cracked beforehand.

While exploring my GPU will randomly just lock itself to 100% load and I drop into the 40's. Doesn't matter what I do, look at the sky or the ground (should lower GPU load) just stays at max.

Stays like that for 3-5 minutes then goes back to normal. Fucking weird man.
This game is just an unmitigated disaster. I just keep finding new problems.

I'm either going to force a 30fps lock or just shelf it until they patch up.

I haven't played much yet, but while running the benchmark i would get a few random freezes for 1-2 seconds. until i switched from vulkan to dx12. after that the benchmark ran smooth, although only 45 fps avg on 1060.

That's obviously frustrating. It's respectable that you're sticking to Windows 7 - I did so for eons until I found MSMG Toolkit and could strip down W10 to run on my terms - but I suspect if you tried a test install of latest Windows 10+ DX12, then those issues would vanish. Despite all the boneheaded UI decisions MS made for W10, the scheduler and kernel are undeniably improved.

My config: [email protected], RTX2080 @ 2040/7250, Windows10 1909. Game's so far pretty flawless, however I had some tearing with Vulkan initially even when FPS showed 60, and DX12 doesn't have that issue.

Didn't change too many Display Settings from default, but reduced Resolution Scale to 0.8, and framerate's so far been pretty stable @ 60. My settings below.

The mouse aiming is a godsend, and made me glad I shelved the console version in anticipation of an eventual PC release. The 3P over the shoulder shooting with the pistol is giving me Remnant: From The Ashes vibes. On console, turning to aim in other directions was extremely floaty and heavy - like being underwater - but on PC its easy to just whip around quickly in any direction. I recommend switching aiming reticle size to "small" in Display settings.

I wanted to see how it runs at LOWEST settings, 1440p.

6700k and GTX 1080 clocked in at like 105 fps average on the benchmark. It pretty much looks like shit but it's smooth.

What's it run on default settings for you?

Looks good enough of default.

Yeah, I think mouse aiming would be really nice for this game. On the Xbox you can either let the game aim-lock for you or you can get used to not hitting anything you want. Aim-lock made the game too easy and manually lining things up made it way too hard.

Yeah that was frustrating, aim-lock on console felt like cheating and there was no challenge. OTOH, trying to manually aim while on a horse was total insanity. Since I've been playing a lot of Remnant lately, muscle memory for twitch pistol-aiming on heads is coming in handy now.

Also what the fuck there's literally settings under general for "bonuses" to your stats under General.

50-60 ish.

Playing with a couple settings from there seem to get it firmly in the 70-80+ range without much visual difference that I can tell.

Lower the volumetric stuff a bit, turn off soft shadows

edit: tried DX12, it was seemingly slightly slower than Vulkan.

Don't even bother with Ultra besides textures, you're just setting yourself up hugely hurt your performance at almost no visual difference as far as I can tell.

Here's a benchmark run... Youtube should process it to 1440p eventually...
