I'm looking for a really inexpensive case that can hold 6 or maybe even 8 3.5" drives.

I have recently learned about Windows 10 Storage Spaces, and this could be a way for me to use a pile of old Hitachi 2 and 4 TB drives and make one "super drive." Any recommendations. I just learned that unlike motherboard based RAID, Windows Storage Spaces is portable to a new install.

Honestly, I've had better luck with Stablebit Drivepool if that's what you're after. I've moved my same pooled drives between 3 different machines (almost 100TB) and never had an issue.

That actually looks really cool. I've never heard of it. Thanks.

I’ve had alot of success with unraid so far, depends on your usecase though.

+1 on the Stablebit Drivepool. I purchased the bundle and got it with Stablebit Scanner, which gives you notifications if certain parameters are met: SMART errors, overheating, capacity and many more. I had looked at unraid and freenas, but wanted to stay in the Windows environment, so I went with Stablebit Drivepool. I recently moved my mini server to a new case and just tossed the drives into it without paying attention to what SATA connection they were on, and after bootup everything was just the way I left it.

Are you just looking for something to hold nothing but HDDs or are you looking to put an entire system in the case?

If you want to do a whole system:

First question is, what do you consider inexpensive?
The cheapest option if you're in a large'ish city, would be craigslist.
Rarely does anyone want to try to ship old cases.

I picked up a corsair 750d and a rosewill nighthawk 117 for $35 each in the austin area.

Sure. I'm not even a n00b in this area. All suggestions welcomed.

Just drives. Of course, I haven't yet figured how to connect to my actual system. Prolly some kind of NAS, or maybe a backplane extender.

Not sure how your 800D is setup, but what about a 3 to 5 conversion? Something like these: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=3x5.25+to+5x3.5

That way you can add them to the current PC.
Highly recommend getting something more enterprise grade, those cheap made ones often have pooly made backplanes that fail and take drives with them.
I use the supermicro CSE-M35T-1B, they're $160 at newegg, but can be had for 1/3 that used on ebay or 2/3 of that on wholesale sites (though many of those are pretty shady).
