Pixel 4

My wife still has the Pixel 2 XL, and for some reason almost seems like a better more durable long lasting phone. Zero problems with it, and has better battery life then my 3 XL.
I'm still using my P2XL and it's working extremely well. It was pretty clear even during review day that the Pixel 3 series wasn't going to be as good in the battery arena (the 3A's seem excellent though). I'm curious if the Pixel 4 will correct this regression.

I'm not too concerned about Ultrawide. Have you seen its quality even on the iPhone 11? I actually enjoy this age of pretty darn good pictures from cell phones but ultrawide images tend to be potato quality in comparison.

It would be nice if some sort of sortware trickery could be used to get a "SomewhatWide" mode where the ultrawide information is used to expand the real image only a little so you don't get the sort of blur for the entire image.

I think this is the first time I've ever been more excited about the iPhone over the Nexus/Pixel. Apple finally implementing good computation photography on their phones is huge like the original Pixel.

It is kind of stupid to buy a brand new flagship Android phone at launch, because they ALWAYS have sales and steep discounts like 2 to 3 months later. Look at Samsung phones, like 3 or 4 months later they're giving away their latest flagship, and carriers have BOGO and big trade in offers, etc...

So the Pixel 4 XL, might be $950 at launch, but then in a couple months, it'll have a one day sale with like $300 off. You just need to be ready for the inevitable sale discount Google or carriers will have on the Pixel 4.

Another slightly off topic thing; Look at how good the OnePlus 7 pro is, and it's $649. And the Pixel 3 XL was like $900. For the price difference, you can almost say the 7 Pro was a better phone, minus the camera and wireless charging of course. But my point, the biggest thing is the OS, the Pixel is Google's homemade darling phone, they created Android, it's their OPERATING SYSTEM, but somehow OnePlus was able to create a OS, in Oxygen, that was smoother more fluid, and have more customization features, while also keeping the price much lower than Google's. OnePlus's OS just works better, smoother, and faster, than Google's very own. For a higher priced more flagship phone, I want to see Google be #1 again, at least over OnePlus for sure.

I want to see Google's Pixel 4 destroy the OnePlus 7t in these categories;

- Smooth fluid OS
- Battery life
- Brighter and sharper better display
- Camera of course
- Fast charging

There's zero reason for Google to let OnePlus beat them in some of these important areas.

Why can't Google stuff in a HUGE battery for once? Just do it :) At least match the Note 10 Plus 4,300mAh battery. I'm a little worried the 3,700mAh and 90hz display won't be fantastic for battery, probably just ok.

I'm a Nexus / Pixel whore :) LOL, but will criticize when I see it, and the Pixel 4 spec's just seem ok, not super great. Interesting, out of the stock Google phones I've owned over the years, I can't remember really any of them being known for great battery life. Is it vanilla Android just isn't as efficient? Or did all those phones get designed with smaller batteries than they should have?

My idea of a Pixel 4 XL;

- 8GB RAM
- 4,300mAh battery
- Tiny circle punch hole camera like the Note 10, give the Pixel 4 XL all screen, no bezels.
- If they can't fit Face ID in there, then just stick with the rear fingerprint scanner like always, or also have a fingerprint scanner in the display as well
- Ultra wide angle camera
- Optimize stock Android to be on par speed and smoothness as Oxygen

These aren't crazy spec's and totally doable. Plus they charge a premium price for the Pixel more so than the OnePlus does, so it can be done.

Lastly, I don't hate the iPhone, I'm actually jealous of the 11 Pro Max in the battery and design department. Apple creates amazing hardware, no question. Huge battery, and thicker phone, thank you. A+ display. Super fast fluid OS. It's just iOS that irks me, I'm too used to stock Android all these years, I find iOS very uncomfortable and jarring for me, plus I have zero other Apple products, no iWatch, no iPad, no MacBook, nothing Apple in my house, so the whole ecosystem is meaningless to me. I'm not against those products, they look great, just not interested in having them. I don't wear watches, and not a tablet fan, and prefer Intel Windows laptops.

It's not that Pixel sucks, it's just that Alphabet could do so much better if it paid much attention.

If tmobile does a bogo promo, the wife and I are in; otherwise, they can keep their $1200 phone.

LOL that's pretty good actually.

But I don't have $3,000 to blow on phones this Fall. If anything I'm just getting one new phone. Most likely the 4 XL, maybe the 7t Pro. The iPhone Pro Max is great, but no way I'm spending $1,100+ on it.

I liked my iPhones and would probably go back to Apple vs. having to buy from an OEM with a clumsy launcher like Samsung. If Google stops making the Pixel, that may happen.
My issue with the iPhone was almost entirely related to media management. iTunes is the freakin' devil and having to use it to manage my music, ebooks, movies, photos, etc. was HELL.
At this point I'm pretty deep into the world of Google apps, but I'd assume most of those can work with iOS pretty well these days.

I guess I'm lucky that I use my phone largely as a communications device and a streaming device; local data is rarely an issue.

But even with that I find adjusting to Apple operating systems to just be awkward.

I though you could drag and drop with Apple phones on PC now. Guess that is still not the case? I remember there were 3rd party tools that allowed you to do that back in the day. I haven't owned a Apple product since the original iPod. I hated iTunes so much and from what I understand it is even worse now.

You might be able to right now, but you couldn't as of maybe 2'ish years ago when my wife last had one. You could copy/paste some files, but nothing was organized into folders and copy MP3's/MOV's just flat out didn't work.
I had a program called "iDevice Manager" that kinda sorta worked but every iPhone update seemed to break it in some way.
With my Pixel (and with my previous Moto X), I just copy/paste my entire photo/music/movie collection over as-is sans any problems. Adding new stuff is as easy as just dragging the files into the right folders.

I never really had any issues with iOS, though. I still don't as far as I can tell. As Android has matured, I find that most functions are the same. There's a 5 minute learning curve about knowing where to swipe and how to go back. After that it's kinda the same thing as Android.

I feel like a lot of this isn't particularly necessary now between streaming services and cloud storage. It's hard for me to say exactly how easy it is since I'm on a Mac, where iTunes is considerably better as it is.

You can drag and drop the photos off of an iPhone (via MTP, Windows 10 for some reason doesn't install the drivers by default like Windows 7) but generally you still need to use iTunes to put music onto your phone.

This was written one year ago when describing Google's Night Sight mode.

"The Pixel 3 has a seemingly legendary status in low-light photography thanks to Night Sight, and that's (mostly) still the case a year on. Night Sight still produces photos that are incredible — and in contrast to its daylight photos, they're incredibly bright and colorful in a way that is not natural. You're getting a photo that doesn't actually represent what you see with your eyes, which is both impressive and also off-putting to some". Android Central

Fast forward to 2019, I find the brightening adjustment quite striking, and note the amount of detail on their clothing and shoes. However, the colors are flat out over saturated, I hope Google will do something about that.

New Pixel 4 Dual exposure feature

Besides all these behind-the-scenes improvements in the algorithm, Google is also introducing something called "dual exposure" that offers a rare addition to its minimalist camera interface in the form of a slider.
Shooting against the sun with the potential for burned highlights? Just tone down the exposure with the slider, and the clouds will appear, as demonstrated in Google's promo video below, seems like a great new addition. PhoneArena

The completed effect looks great, and it was easily done.

It would be really nice if Google put the same effort into providing better battery life as they do into having the best e-peen camera. In fact, I bet they'd sell a helluva lot more Pixel 4/4XL phones if they had a 5000 mAh battery and the same camera as the 3/3XL.

THANK YOU

I really love stock Android, but man, the Nexus / Pixel phones have never been known for battery champ's. I want a vanilla Android phone giving me 11 Pro Max type of battery life. Please someone do this already.

I think OnePlus does a better job at battery life than a Pixel?

Do you think the upcoming OP 7t will do even better than 7 Pro in the battery department ? It will have a 1080p screen with a 3,800mAh battery.

I hope the slightly lower screen rez helps boost the 7T's battery life. We'll soon find out.

I do love my Pixel 3 XL, but the shitastic battery life is pissing me off, especially with everybody creaming their pants over the iPhone 11 Pro Max's awesome battery life. And with the Pixel 4 XL, having a 90hz screen, but only a 3,700mAh battery, I'm worried battery life will just be average, yet again for a Pixel phone.

Heck, I may go for a 7 Pro if T-Mobile discounts it more to get rid of inventory, just to give me good battery life again.

On the plus side, since Google seems to really like to.. be inspired by the iPhone, perhaps since Apple FINALLY [it in large batteries then maybe the the Pixel will get it in the next iteration.

I don't understand why Google felt like they had to regress in this area when they went from the Pixel 2XL to 3XL.

Yeah, wait till next year LOL That seems to be a common theme with the Pixel line. Maybe next year they'll improve this or that, or add this...

I have always loved the Nexus / Pixel line, but almost always I have wished they had better battery life, and year after year, they only do mediocre ok battery life, never stunning super great like other phones. Google, for the Pixel 4 XL, a battery like the Note 10+'s 4,300mAh would have done the job.

I'm curious what this is gonna look like during the presentation, but honestly, aside from some issues with the charging port (which looks to be a $30 replacement?) my Pixel 2 should last me hopefully until the Pixel 5 comes out.

I did too until the Nexus 6 drove me insane. That thing was the laggiest POS I've ever used. It literally drove me over to Apple and I haven't had a reason to go back.

Curious. To me it looks like the pixel 2XL is a pita to take apart. I could be interested in swapping out the charging port also.

Yeah, the complications taking it apart seem pretty awful.
But i don't think it's "rather buy a new phone" level of awful.
Maybe a "pay a local repair shop who already has the equipment" level of awful.
