Ryzen 2400G and Modern HTPC Performance

I'm thinking of getting a 2400G for a sff ITX build to run my Plex server. Wanted to see if anyone was using a ryzen APU for similar or knew what other HTPC stuff it does or doesn't support.

Hevc/x265 hardware acceleration, 4k Netflix, HDR, UHD Blu-Ray, handbrake performance, multiple Plex streams (4k or 1080 to 1080) etc...

Some things like 4k Netflix aren't deal breakers as I have a X1Xs, Roku, 4k tv apps, etc but having one device for the family when I'm not home would be nice. Would probably be streaming to two to three devices on the same network fairly often and occasionally one or two remote streams.

Last time I had the Plex server actually running all the time I had an i7 7700 and the CPU would get crushed having a friend of mine across the country receive a 720p stream from a Blu-ray rip off my storage drive.
 
FYI the 3400 has some nice frequency improvements on the GPU to get a smige more power if the price is close enough. Fyi you can now use gpu encoders in the server, however Intel quick sync is probably quicker in this regard at least with x264. That being said if you had an i7 7700 getting smashed by plex, you are only getting a 4790 level of cpu out of the AMD chip. I would look for something with more cores and maybe Zen 2/ore one of the quadro cards that can offload 10+ streams to the GPU?

There is a 2400g I can get at my work for about $50. However I did end up deciding to just go with a 9700k to be sure CPU should be good for basically ever, and quicksync is just better all around it seems. I've been testing them at work in handbrake and quick sync just seems consistently better in file size and time. From what I've seen on the Plex forums it should be good for at least six streams as well depending on the device and resolution.


I have seen some mention of the quadro cards over there, but I'm trying not to have a dedicated card so I can use a small htpc case. I think I'm going to go for the Silverstone ML04B and cut a 120 millimeter hole in the top to fit my cooler. I want to use a normal size optical drive, two 3.5 hdds and fit it in the space under my TV which is only 12cm high.

Going in a gigabyte z390 m gaming and should be able to keep temps in line at around 4.8 all core. Was given a server type Intel pro dual gigabit pcie x4 card as well.
 
Well quick sync is fast but the quality is gross.

AMD vce would have turned a better result. But 9700k is a lot faster if a CPU overall. Good buy.

I tested by taking a one minute Elysium 4k clip 400MB and converted it down to 1080p using just the CPU and then VCE/QSV in both 264 and 265, and looking at the same frame of each really couldn't see any noticable difference and neither could my coworker. Had it set to 20 quality and very slow. QSV and VCE were just about as fast as each other taking about 1m to 1m30s but QSV ended up at 80Mb vs VCE was just over 100MB.

Well intel has probably improved the quality since the last time I used it. That's good. Historically quicksync was atrocious.

Yeah I hadn't used it since Ivy Bridge but people are saying they have been improving it a lot over the years and next to CPU only it's the best one.
