This thread might be good for some laughs. Post pictures or links where the marketing dept for a tech product clearly doesn't know what they are doing...

I'll start:

Motherboard is upside down in the promotional shot.

The irony is that marketing purpose is also to make people notice things in a sea of similar things. So the example above can be considered a marketing success.

The Coke cup on the right features Netflix "Stranger Things". So ... the upside-down burger is spot on.

didn't say it wasn't. just pointing out that all they did was turn it upside down, lazy but yes possibly effective.
I don't actually consider motherboards to have a top. Typically they are not installed that way, but I don't feel like it's 100%. The idea that they did it on purpose to make it stand out is interesting as well.

Next you'll tell me that showing the earth with the south pole on the top is upside down. :p

There is clearly a top to motherboards

Those PS2 ports on the back of a motherboard ONLY ever go a the top of a PC case and text on I/O plates proves that. The silk screen text on the motherboard is always written so it’s clear which orientation is up (PS2 side up.) Unless you want your case feet tits up, (case upside down) that board is upside down... Now one could argue it’s a mining motherboard and so there isn’t a “standard” case for it... but I’d argue it’s a marketing dept blunder...

I know what you mean! The arctic ocean is ONLY ever the top side of the earth. The country and city labels and text is always written so it's clear which orientation is up.

I guess there is some concern that all of the electrons might pool on the wrong side of the PCB. Usually you want your ground planes on top and your +12V planes on bottom. That way all of the voltage sources can pump the electrons upward, and then gently allow them to filter down to the bottom. It's like running a typical 4 stroke engine upside down, all of the oil leaves the oil sump and then the oil pumps have nothing to pump and everything gets all screwed up. :D

Desktop cases contradict this statement

sort of confused here, why is it upside down? its a motherboard, it can be shown however they need to.

I have seen several machines were the PS/2 ports were on the bottom when the case was the right way up. Some OEM's do this as well. The board is displayed that way in the pic so you can see the IO ports as it is on the right of the picture. If it was on the left, it would be the "traditional" way up.

Which OEMs

You guys are clever being so contrarian. Oh so clever...

Love it when somebody puts up 3 arguments and people try to counter on one of them and then total ignored the rest...

Are you really going to argue that’s common?

ALL CAPS YELLING “REALLY” to boot?

What with the PSU extension so the PSU is mounted on the front of that case? Yeah that’s normal... Nice try - but that’s an eccentric and old dated case...

Don’t play dumb.

And if you aren’t playing...

Then don’t be dumb.

Are you paying dumb with your ONLY statment?
And that old case is better than 90% of today blinking ,TG infested crap.

stolen from Retronym in the funniest pics.
how lazy can they get?!

The funny part about this is fast food places used to build burgers with the vegetables as toppings. Now every place puts the toppings on the bottom and the meat near the top of the upper bun.

A classic:

Not exactly a "tech" product, but the theory still applies. :D

I was going to post that but you beat me to it.

Now now gentlemen. Lets at least agree that
1) The orientation pictured is not very common
2) Motherboard functionality does not change with respect to orientation (except perhaps if the motherboards has heatpipes on it, then cooling performance might suffer a little)

The motherboard was orientated that way to show the back panel I/O

Certainly a new way to display it. At least I can see all the ports.

I tend to think of the top of the motherboard as the side with the ZIF socket and DIMMS, and the bottom the side that goes against the standoffs in the case.

A personal gripe (as a qualified marketer) is that many people dumb down marketing as promotions, packaging, slogans and events.

There is a lot of research, and “science” that should go into marketing.

And I think the photographer is a troll since there are other images from shutterstock with people holding the soldering iron by the shaft and not the handle.
wow, that is like really dumb, not only because she is holding the shaft, but what is she soldering that needs such a big tip on the that motherboard? I don't see a choke or anything big near it.

you know her coworkers were like "bet you wont hold the soldering iron by the heating element for the company catalogue" and she was all "hold my beer"
