Android 10 released!

The October update on my Pixel 3 XL makes it super smooth and fast, good update.

I'm noticing much more aggressive memory management on my 2 XL now; most apps are being killed from memory immediately after switching from them which def wasn't the case on Pie. I'm also getting launcher redraws frequently which very rarely happened before (if ever). Battery life might be slightly worse for me overall too even after enabling battery optimization on every app that I could and restricting background usage on them too, but I'll have to check out the location settings as well as mentioned above.

Just want to reiterate this to see if anyone else noticed it. I can't even listen to music and use Chrome at the same time right now without it killing my music, then I get launcher redraw when I go home to restart it from the widget. This is stupid.

Memory usage in the dev settings says Android OS is using 1.2-1.3 GB alone, with Android System next in line at almost 300 MB (292), Play Services at 230 MB, then most other stuff under 100 MB.

No one else here seemed to have this issue, but apparently it was definitely a prob enough for them to add this in the udpate:

  • A-138323667 UI Fix for memory drain in UI Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL
A reboot would fix it for a few days to a week at least, so hopefully this fixes it for good and performance will be back to what I had on Pie.

Battery life seems a little degraded so far for me too, but that might be because I've been on cellular a lot more the past few months at my new job/location. I used to be on WiFi 90% of the time and now I'm on cellular 90% of the time until I get a good router/mesh setup at my house, as I don't get signal anywhere except on the first floor where the router is for now.

I swear, ever since upgrading to 10, I have had a weird issue with maps on my Pixel 2 XL. When using maps for the drive to work (use it for arrival time/alternate routes, I know how to get there I swear), maps will just close on me in the middle of using navigation mode. It closes at the same location as I approach a highway interchange. I'v tried clearing cache and clearing storage. Clearing storage sucked because it wiped out a bunch of settings, also none of it helped. Doesn't occur on the return trip home. I did just downloaded Octobers updating, hoping for a fix.

I use assistant to restart the navigation but its just annoying at this point. So far no other route does this.

Edit: Maps recently updated and fixed the issue...

For those of you on 10, have you tried the new split screen mode and seen if it really doesn’t pause apps when inactive now?

No clue if it's the October update or a random app acting up, but my Pixel 2's battery life has fallen off of a cliff in the last 2 weeks.

My 2 XL's definitely got better with the October update. Install BetterBatteryStats or Gsam battery app and run the commands it tells you over ADB to see what's keeping your phone awake and/or the CPU ramped up. Hopefully it's not "Android OS" or "Android system" or some BS like that. I want to shit in Google's mailbox every time I see that.

Something I missed a couple of days ago, Galaxy S10 just got their android 10 beta

Updated my 2 XL to 10 and confirmed that apps that didn't used to continue to run in splitscreen as the background app now do.

Eww.

Whats with these new navigation buttons.

It had me worried there for a second, but you can return them to the proper android experience in Settings -> System -> Gestures -> System Navigation

I don't understand why Google sees the need to constantly mess with what works.

I never found split screen to be terribly useful. When they first introduced in it 6 I gave it a try, but haven't used it since. The quick switch to recent windows (double tap the square) is simply a more convenient way for me to use two apps at the same time.

Funny thing though. I just long pressed the square and nothing happened. I guess they've changed how this works in 10.

Hmm.

So the two button mode was apparently a Pie thing. I must have disabled that when I first updated to Pie and forgot it ever existed.

Apparently 10 has a new gesture only based navigation thing? I haven't seen it once. I just bought my Pixel 3, and I switched to Nova launcher before updating to 10, and apparently that mode doesn't work in Nova, so it defaults to Pie controls.

Either way, I don't want either the two button mode Pie introduced or this new gesture junk.

This is the only way an Android phone should ever look across the bottom. :p

(also, I just noticed that while they rob me of the top corners of my screen on the actual phone with that rounded corner nonsense, they are still there in the screenshot. I wish I could just have kept my nice normal rectangular screen)

Don't mess with what works. Arbitrary change only pisses people off.

Glad I have another year on my og Pixel.
Feels good, not anything Earth shattering besides not having to buy a replacement phone until next year.

That was my plan, but my OG pixel died in its sleep a week ago.

I waited for the Pixel 4 launch, not because any of the rumors were exciting me, but because I was hoping the 3 and 3a would get cheaper when it launched. They didn't, so I waited for no reason.

Bought me a Pixel 3. I actually think it's a better phone than the 4, at least for my purposes.

That said, I don't see the need to keep up with the latest and greatest Android release. It seems as if with every release they just introduce more stuff I don't like. I'll never abandon a phone because I'm not getting the next Android revision, provided they still provide regular secruity patches. That - to me - is the really important part.

Yep, they have. While you used to just be able to long press the square, now you have to go to the app selection screen (press square, or however the fuck you do it in these new useless two button and no button modes) and then drag the window bar of an app to the top of the screen.

That seems like it took something simple and added more steps to it...

I'm having those early OS annoyances.
Mainly Chrome lag, reboot solves it.

My Nexus S was like this toward the end of it's patch life with ICS.
I slipped down a flight of stairs, ending that phone.

Worst comes to worst I can grab a replacement phone in event of a failure.

I just got a warranty replacement for my pixel 2XL over a busted USB port and happy to keep using it for the next few years. No reason to buy any of the newer phones. I was going to buy a 3 but Google agreed to warrant the phone even with the crack screen so I am happy to keep using the 2xl. Til this phones USB port bites the dust anyway in two years.

I'm still having battery issues with my smaller Pixel 2. Nothing appears out of the ordinary except that my battery is dying about 20% faster than it did a month ago. I don't have any new apps and I've changed no settings, so I can only assume it's related to Android 10. In particular the October update seems to be where things really became noticeable.

Battery life on my 3XL never has been great so I don't know if the latest update made any difference. As for navigation, I adapted to gestures pretty quickly. I thought I'd miss the 3 buttons, but I prefer gestures now.
