I am building 2 rigs and want to try to keep expense down.

I used to have a 1070 and it handled 1440P 60hz pretty well, very well actually. I sold the card a while back and now I am looking to get back in, however, the new gen is a little rich for my blood.

Does the 1080 handle 1440P 144hz alright?

144Hz 1440P takes some grunt. A GTX 1080 can do it, but you'll have to turn down some settings depending upon the game. There are some new 1080 Ti's going for $450 or so here in the FS/FT section and I'd grab one of those.

Heh. I am actively working with the seller on the 1080s. I don't have the budget for 2 1080Tis unfortunately.

I am not going to be playing 2019 AAA games so I figured these would be a nice placeholder.

Thank you for the reply.

One Ti would do the trick. No need to go SLI and you'd save money as well.

My question is what's the price of the 1080's that you are looking at ? Might have a cheaper alternative.

1080ti if u want to maxx out id say. otherwise 1080 will do the job i figure. but even a good oc 980ti is prety close to a 1080.

I don't understand how any of you are answering his question without first asking the most important one.

"What games are you planning on playing?"

Nothing super new. When I play Cyberpunk2077, I'll get a next gen card

This guy has brand new 1080TIs good prices

But... 1080 should dor 1440 fine, at extreme rates you're going to need to turn things down. Or sell it and buy a TI

I offered to buy them from him (referring to the 1080s), he wouldn't do PayPal Goods and Services so he didn't sell them to me. He wanted me to do PayPal Friends and Family. I even offered to pay the 2.9% so I'm covered on my end. I'm a newer member and never traded before (on this site). I was pretty disappointed because they would work perfectly.

I think he thought I was trying to scam him. I still would work out a deal with him but he won't respond to my PMs anymore.

I had a GTX1080 and when I upgraded my 144hz 1080p monitor to a 144hz 1440p monitor, the performance hit was noticeable.

That's not surprising as the monitor upgrade resulted in nearly double the pixels to drive.

So my 1080 got traded for a 1080ti and now I'm back in the 120-140fps range.

I used to have a GTX 1080 on a 1440p 144Hz monitor (actually I ran SLI, but many times I needed to disable the second card).

It definitely worked, but I'd be lucky to break 100 fps in newer games (of course, e-sports titles would get well above 144 fps maxed).

Even with a 2080 Ti, you still may not be able to get the full 144 fps as many engines become CPU limited above around 120 fps depending on the game.

All things considered, the GTX 1080 would work *but* you'll want to look into G-Sync/FreeSync monitors for the best experience.

With an Adaptive Sync monitor, 90 fps will feel butter smooth and the GTX 1080 can handle that. It is very important.

I would consider a 1080Ti to be the minimum spec for 1440/144

You should be able to run most games at high / ultimate, but not all games.

Ghost Recon Wildlands looks terrible (to me) on anything below max or near max so I only get 60-80fps

On Borderlands 3, if I want 130-144 fps, I have to run low settings (which looks fine to me)

on the other hand, there are plenty of games that run great on triple 1440P on that same card - it just depends on the game.

In my opinion, it's worth the $150-200 jump.

Full steam ahead on the 5700 XT

1080 ti may be the sweet spot for that monitor config, 1080 capable but not ideal, and of course, always depends on the game (thinking about actual games).

I had to OC my 1080 heavily in order to just sometimes hit my monitor's max refresh rate of 1440p165. I upgraded to a 1080ti and it hits the refresh rate cap far more consistently. I was seeing 90-120 playing Overwatch on "ultra" with a 4.5GHz 6600k on the 1080. The 1080ti does 120-165. Both were OC'd to 2GHz+ core speeds.

If you're going the 1080 route, Gsync or the equivalent is a must for smooth gaming.

I had 2 1080's in SLI on my previous setup since they released in 2016 and maintaining 144 Hz at 1440p was becoming a problem with lack of SLi/mgpu support on newer games in 2019. Older games were fine. So I'd have to say based on today's games, no, it's not enough for 1440p at 144hz anymore, especially if you are looking at only 1 card.

If you absolutely must hit that 144fps mark for your 144hz monitor then no, but if you're happy with good performance that doesn't quite quite get to 144fps in all games, it will be fine. If you're building new from scratch, I'd say aim higher. If it's a card you already have, I would just stick with it for a while longer.

Define games played.
People tend to ignore 60+ player modes chugging down 2080tis, or don't look at thread documenting current state of a build causing specific issues.

Those 60+ player games are typically putting more CPU load than GPU. It’s not like the scenery is getting more complex as you add players.

As someone mentioned above, You should go for 1080Ti . It might future proof You for some good time.
