Comcast, beware: New city-run broadband offers 1Gbps for $60 a month

Sure, faster than 20mbps is fine. 1gbps is almost unusable...in most circumstances the server you are downloading from isn't going to feed you that fast even if you have the connection on your end.

It's for bragging rights.

Okay. Why are you so against people having access to gigabit internet? Why build for what we need now instead of building for what we will need in the future?

I get gigabit speeds 90% of the time using IDM ... and it is incredibly useful. Downloading 50-60 GB PC games in minutes is extremely pleasant. There’s also plenty of multi-threading tweaks in browsers like Firefox that take advantage of gigabit speeds despite server limitations.

The city next to me, Lakeland, is looking to build their own network. That'd be pretty awesome if they did. I would love to say I'd move out there just for that, but I know that isn't possible. I still hope they do it and stick it to Spectrum.

I'm curious why everybody is so afraid of somebody seeing their data? What kind of illegal activity are you up to? Or are you so arrogant as to think anybody gives a shit what you are doing online?

Besides the simple principles in our constitution, I couldn't care less who sees what I am doing online, other than some stranger trying to steal my credit card/passwords. I don't think I have to worry about the feds stealing my CC info.

I also can't comprehend what you would do with a 1gbps connection...my only option is cellular and the ~20mbps or so I get (on a good day) is just fine for streaming high definition video. I'd kill for a 1.5mbps DSL line...
The same reason I wouldn't let hte police into my home wihtout a warrant. I know it's out of fashion with some, but there's this lil thing called the 4th amendment. you should look into it. I value my privacy, regardless of whether I"m breaking the law or not.

But hey, if you don't, then by all means, put a sign in front of your house that lists every porn site you've been to, or every message you've ever posted. All your emails should be put on display and if you're really innocent, then you'll record all your conversations and activities in your house and then put copies for people to view as well as copies sent to the police and FBI. After all, you're an angel.

you would lose that bet in my household. 3 kids all with streaming devices crippled my network years ago when we had a 50/10 connection....thankfully we have faster options now.

EDIT: just for clarification, Im not saying your entirely wrong..I surely dont need a 1Gbps connection, but its certainly nice to know I will likely never have to worry about running out of bandwidth
True, but that still doesn't require gigabit. Unless your kids spend all day downloading Linux images, the odds are that you'd be fine with 150-200 down. As I recall, a 4k stream from Amazon/Netflix is only 24Mbps, and it's unlikely that anything else would chew up that much bandwidth (other than big downloads).

I'd certainly take it to get out form under Comcast, but If I could spit a gigabit connction with my brothers family and my parents, we'd probably never use up 30% of the bandwidth (again assuming we all watch 4k streams at he same time).

Okay. Why are you so against people having access to gigabit internet? Why build for what we need now instead of building for what we will need in the future?
Where did I say I was against it? I just said I can't comprehend why you'd need it or how you'd use it. Somebody has to make fun of the geeks creaming their jeans over an internet connection...

And don't act like for a second this won't get old in just a few years and you'll want the new 10gb, and then 100gb, then 1tb, and on, and on, and on. The providers are never going to give you something that you will just be happy with and they can't charge another premium for every few years.

We're talking about law enforcement, not every idiot in the neighborhood. But yes, the police/FBI are welcome to see anything in my computer or phone. I record all conversations and my phone is not locked, and I happily hand it over at a traffic stop with insurance info on it. They could, if they wanted to, legally copy the contents and have every email/text/phone call...they're in for a long boring night.

Well bully for you. I'll keep my 4th amendment rights, thank you very much. I have no illusions. If the police are investigating you, they're not on your side (even if you're innocent).

But again, I'm glad to hear that if a cop knocks on your door, you'll let them come in and search your home. I will not.

Not sure what you're so worked up about. I'm welcome to have my opinion just as much as you have yours. I never said yours was wrong. I'm not stupid, I know how police work.

Boy the nerds sure get worked up about their internet connections!

Yeah how dare we enjoy only having to wait 10 minutes for a large game or movie download instead of twiddling our thumbs for over an hour on a saturated 100 mbit connection.

Gives mom a few extra minutes to bring a hot pocket down to the basement.

Silly my sitting here watching Netflix in high def streaming with no delays over a cell phone from a rural tower. I'm like a cave man!

Everyone has different priorities. There are some good options now in rural areas via wireless. That said, 100 mbit is slow these days if you are a gamer or watch video streams a lot. If you want to download that 60GB+ game in 2 hours, you are using all of that bandwidth and not streaming or downloading anything else. For me, thats not a big deal but if you have a household with 2-3 other people sucking up bandwidth its not so fun. Doubly so if you have bandwidth caps which many cable co's have now.

Lakeland still can't keep people from cut their hair into mullets! lol

I know the feeling. We have 85/85 from Frontier and before my stepson left for college he hammered the connection often. Now it's not such a big deal. 85mbps is plenty to stream 4k on one TV, a few 1080p TVs, and surf/game.

2 months ago switched from Cox to at&t fiber and couldn't be happier. 300mbps up/down for $50, taxes and fess if there are any are included. Bill is $50 flat.

Had Cox cable internet for 18 years, and it was great for the first 16. Then line issues, they replaced the line to the house, fixed it for 2 years. 3 months ago issue came back, replaced line inside the house, no change, tried 2 different brand new cablemodems... i knew there was an issue at the other end of the cable because 2 years ago when the outside cable was replaced the tech told me that the cover on (whatever the cables all go into) was broken, and it had surely gotten water in it. He opened ticket on that and when I called a month later to ask what they had done, the answer was "replace the cover"... Maybe it was a passive device, i don't know. But the signal got really shitty in early May. And the tech said he "didn't put the heavy RG6 on the truck that day..." so no new outside line could be run (probably not the line but that's the order of replacement they go in) without making another damn appointment?!. (lame) I had called at&t on Saturday after the inept cox line guy was there (with another appt scheduled for Monday) and they called me Sunday to say someone could be there that afternoon if I wanted to switch, so I said fuck it lets do it. That afternoon, had fiber into the house (they came and buried it about a week later).

Faster and cheaper.

Got a good Arris docsis 3.1 (sb8200) I'd sell...

Or stop doing naughty things and take the tin foil off your head.

right i mean with all of our imagination there is no possible legitimate reasons to value privacy right? dumb things like a gay teen looking for support on the internet to avoid suicide, a battered spouse googling her escape to the nearest womens shelter/legal help, or a girl trying to find out how to read a pregnancy test using her parents computer. its all people doing naughty things. right. yes.

not your cup of tea? how about your prospective employer paying for api access to see if you did anything naughty like visit a shooting range in the past year, or what your political affiliation is. With location history and your full name its trivial make a great guess and tie that to a gmail account with all your history. this is coming. privacy is absolutely in everyones interest.

remember the only thing protecting everything you do is simply a corporations promise, on some long ass EULA that they are free to change anytime.

I regularly come close to saturating a 1Gbps connection bringing games down and having that much throughput means my wife watching something upstairs in 4k doesn't even notice nor are any other services perceptibly impacted. Just because you can't imagine a use case doesn't mean it isn't useful.

The tech who did the optical box install mentioned that lots of video editors and the like who work from home choose the city I live in precisely because the municipal fiber offering means they can shunt GBs of data up and down with ease, on the cheap, and with no concern of bullshit data caps.

Gigabit is $120/month in Oakland through Comcast.

I've actually been loving Comcast in this city. It works great and the speeds are dandy.

Not super expensive, nor cheap either for regular plans.

How absurd is it that this needs to be explained? "If you aren't doing anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about." people actually welcome police-state tyranny because they are completely naive when it comes to abuse of power. Do they really need to experience such violations to understand? History isn't a good enough teacher? This isn't a tin-foil hat conspiracy; we have US politicians NOW working to violate fundamental rights of the people.

Just because something isn't "wrong" now doesn't mean it won't be held against you later. A comedian making tranny jokes 10 years ago was fine, now it's a career-ending move.
Hold the wrong political views? Don't worry, they're guaranteed to find something illegal to hold against you in the search of your internet history.

This is a strange thing to say when so many people in the US have basically no choice other than awful connections due to telecom monopolies. And trying to boil down the desire for higher speeds to some sort of fad that people want for no reason - how out to lunch can you be? Someone finally decides to invest in some damned infrastructure that will both modernize the city and make it an attractive place to live...there should be nothing but applause for this.

its the weirdest thing. my response is basically a copy/paste at this point. im not even a "dude, sheeple" type person but their need to conform on every aspect of leftist dogma is frightening. In this example he didnt want to be associated in any way with "tin foil hats" so rather than live with a little social pressure he went to a forum and dismissed the case for any privacy like it was no thing, and tried to belittle everyone else who might disagree(like they always do).

How could any of that have ANYTHING to do with the government running/looking at your internet? People totally confuse the issue of every random person seeing your activity and the government, two totally different things.

Not to mention it is quite a stretch to assume that just because a city is offering internet that the government will be able to freely watch everything you do. All the former laws still apply.

Do you actually think 1gbps will be the standard well into the future? The internet does not last. Any sort of "infrastructure" you build will need to be updated within 10 years, on a never ending cycle. I can guarantee most of the people getting these speeds do not really need them, many probably don't even know what 1gbps means. Like how most people don't know what a kilowatt is on their power bill. Yes, a few geeks on this forum can use the speed, this is the kind of place they hang out. The average everyday person does not need that sort of speed and will see no difference from 100mbps. The providers know this and oversell their lines - if every customer tried to use 1gbps at the same time they would not get that speed.

I have 480v 3 phase power service at my house, and yes, I use it in my shop. I am an odd case, the neighbors wouldn't know what that is let alone have any use for it. The average person would never ever need it, but it doesn't mean it isn't available, nor do I believe it shouldn't be available to those who actually need it.

And I'm sorry, but if you're downloading so many games a 100mbps connection can't handle it, and you can't handle a few minute wait, that is just sad. Go outside and get a tan for christ sake.

...but how dare I have a different opinion than you. *sigh*

It's not your opinion people here care so much about (I know it may surprise you but you're not that important) it's the fact that you're acting like a total cunt about it and were from your very first post.

...says the person throwing a profanity filled tantrum. *sigh* You just can't handle people that have opinions that differ from yours.

And I will repeat:
The providers know this and oversell their lines - if every customer tried to use 1gbps at the same time they would not get that speed.

If everybody actually used 1gbps, the entire system would crash. The providers know this as a fact and base all of the multi million dollar investments on such. Just like if everybody wanted to pull their money out of the bank at the same time.

I really could not care less if you think I am a cunt, surely the feeling is mutual. Join the club, I say what I feel and I tell the blunt truth, if you don't like it please block me, that is what that feature is for. I'd rather have you think I'm an asshole than some lame gamer who can't handle waiting a couple minutes to play yet another game all day. They should try being productive for a little bit while things are downloading.

Except you don't know my opinion. "Oh no bad words, must hide". I didn't say you were one I said you were acting like one. Big difference there. You don't tell the "blunt truth", you over react and attempt to insult everyone who disagrees with you. That's not blunt, it's anti-social and immature. It's not the truth but your (irrelevant) opinion based on an extremely small world view.

Except you don't know my opinion.
By all means, please indulge us with your expertise in this issue. You really have no dog in this fight if you don't have an opinion on the topic to share.

"Oh no bad words, must hide".
Who is hiding from bad words? If you got to know me you would realize I could make a sailor blush. That's how I speak to my own mother. It does not however help you to make any sort of coherent argument about anything.

You can find the "ignore" button by clicking on my username, if you don't want to hear what I have to say please use it. Otherwise get over yourself and deal with it rather than derailing an entire thread. Other people have different opinions than yours, and I never told you yours was wrong. It certainly isn't any more correct or accurate than mine is. Profanity filled rants and personal attacks are certainly not helping your cause any. Sometimes you find people with opposing opinions "insulting", but that is life and does not change the fact that they are welcome to their own opinion and I have never personally attacked you.

Edit: Hmm...seems like your last post got deleted. I wonder why?

No, that's not how that works. What you think you see is not what I am talking about. His posts would not disappear unless I ignored him, but unlike some others I am more than happy to hear, discuss, and respect other's opinions, but not belligerent rants that serve no actual purpose.

How can they oversell fiber-to-the-home connections? To my knowledge, these are not shared connections like cable internet.

Additionally, you keep refuting your own arguments:

- Nobody needs 1 Gbps
- Any sort of infrastructure you build will need to be updated within 10 years

If nobody needs 1 Gbps then there should be no concerns about longevity, yes? If there's tons of headroom then there's room to grow, which is a prudent way to build infrastructure. And yes, most people would rather download their game or movie or whatever in 5 minutes and have the network free again than saturate their connection for multiple hours...

As if every government worker is pure and incorruptable and won't abuse their powers or use their knowledge to blackmail people.

Also, if the technology is available now, why not build the infrastructure with it now and then update every 10 years, instead of using outdated tech and requiring updates every 3-4 years?

They may be offering gigabit to the door but I would be very interested in knowing what kind of back end they will be offering. I have seen far too many communities set up their own internet only to resell the very ISP they were hoping to supplant while offering an overall service because the backend wasn’t there.

You guys are sidetracked talking about govt spying... they don't need "city infrastructures" to spy on internet traffic... whatever is going on along those lines, isn't affected one way or the other by a city putting in their own fiber.

More cities should do this. Competition is a good thing.

Just had fiber move into the area earlier this year. We dropped comcast where I was paying 97$ a month for SD channels and 150mbps. We switch to Fiber 1000/1000 and pay 70$. Would never touch comcast again..... sure you can get 1g internet for 80$ and month for the first year(goes up to $110 after its up) but your capped for data and you share bandwidth with your neighbors.

Comcast had a strangle hold on the area for a long time and the city finally let others in.

Eh, it's $15 dollars to rent their modem and get their xfi Internet security with no cap. I know it's extra, but my only other option is att dsl.

Look at it this way, if you buy your own modem it pays for itself in 5 months.......its well worth purchasing your own modem for sure, don't pay them any more money than you have to.

I would love to have 1Gbit. It would make having a current offsite backup easier. It takes a while to copy 1TB with my 10Mbit upload speed.
Some people can put 1Gbit to some good hard use...

Yeah, but I don't get the no cap if I use my own modem.
