Struggling to decide - 2070S vs 5700XT?

Then it sounds like you have a physical hardware issue. How did the card run without before you disassembled it?

I only gave it a quick test prior to installing the waterblock, plus i had monitor issues(needed a displayport to active DVI-DL adaptor), still looking at replacing the monitor, getting the Electriq 35" Ultrawide(it's the Massdrop Vast sold under a different name)

MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, or similar, do not like Navi. You should close/disable them and use the AMD overlay.

When you say temps are high, how high are you talking about? The temp reported will be higher naturally since it is hotspot temperature, but you may be throttling depending on the heat and cooling.

Hotspot temps are just over 100, but thats with a heavy OC, at normal speeds it's going at about 80

Wattman constantly crashed on me whenever i try to make changes, it's the most flaky part of this whole setup, but i think it might be conflicting with the plethora of RGB management software i have installed :D

Haven't really had a chance to put this thing through it's paces, just more initial impressions and my daily grind on BnS. If i had known BnS performance was going to be so shit, i would have gone for a 2070S.

Which game(s) do you have these issues with? Maybe compare it against a review with frame times?

Also a quick Timespy to make sure your score is on par with reviews never hurts.

Just did a Timespy test, and score seemed a little low in comparison. Checked GPU-Z, and my PCI-E Bus link seems to be fluctuating between x16 @ 3.0 and x16 @ 1.1, might be an issue with the Riser Cable, I'll check that when i get home, i'm running the test remotely from work, so not much i can do from here at the moment.

Also have a weird issue since the latest driver install(19.9.1), Fan speed which should report as 0 is reporting as 65535 RPM!!!!!!! impressive!!

I did a safe mode DDU removal of all drivers and installed again, same fan issue.

Hotspot temps do not hit over a 100C with the regular cooler, there is no way it should be hitting those temps with a block. Your problem is most definitely with the block, your loop or the mounting of your block. The card is overheating and causing your issues and as such, you would have had the same issues with a 2070S, if you did the exact same things.

I did tighten the screws on the block since then :p

I think you'll find that these hotspot(junction temps) on these card are 'normal', even so with a waterblock i was expecting lower, bear in mind that this was at 50% powerboost, and max OC that wattman would allow and running furmark. I think i had 2100Mhz and a junction temp of 71C(81C) earlier (270W power) which is more reasonable. The internet is full of 110C is OK stories coming from AMD.

This card isn't overheating, it's just a little toasty :D

On this note though, i do intend to rip everything out check it all over again, The temps should be a little lower, we'll see how it goes, when i have the hours to get this done

What are the temps when everything is running at default settings? Also, with a block, even with your settings, that temp is way to high for it to be running correctly, even with furmark, in my opinion. (With a block, of course.) Not trying to argue, by the way, just thinking through things in a step by step process. :)

I actually agree with you, my previous GPU's would never get any where near those temps.

normal usage, default settings 100% load, it runs about 65-70 Hotspot, GPU is about 45 i think.

I haven't had the time to do a full test of everything, was trying undervolting a minute ago, but it's crashed, and i'm remote :D

Recent pic from Wattman monitoring, pretty reasonable i think

Apart from the fan speed :D

……...I'm going with a 5700XT. what the "best" non-reference model is not sure. but i'm a couple of paydays away from the purchase.
Also looking for a monitor upgrade. considering this freesync monitor which gets a fair enough wrap @ TFT Central, decided on flat screen (not curved) and 1440p...and IPS versus VA:
27" LG 27GL850-B QHD IPS LED 144Hz

(and wow check out my sig. that's dated back to my first and until now only post in this forum! nostalgic and tragic XD) I have an 8600k rig and interim crappo 1050 grfx right now...
my existing 24" monitor is over ten years old. <3 kudos to the panel makers they have longevity :-D

Haha, love the sig machine, you still have it? :D

People seem to be going gaga over the Red Devil, is it even out yet? massive cooler and 3 fans.

That monitor looks good, my Electriq 35" turned up, gotta get used to this ultrawide view, but 3440x1440@100hz is good enough for me.

yeah. the ultra wide is appealing to me for the extra screen 'real estate' ...something to think about. and the red devil has the heaviest heatsink (by weight) of the non ref cards at this point in time. anyways I have 2-4 weeks before the money is ready to ponder. :)
ps. and no, the e6700 I sold...aswell as the gts's. still have the ram floating about somewhere...and the motherboard long since dead.
