My intentions with the laptop are: record keeping (spreadsheets), surfing, some light video editing, and the potential to play modern games if I decide I have time for that again in my life.

Here are the 3 I'm looking at:

1. G5 15" Gaming (5590) w/ GTX 1650 4GB - https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlin...OeBzFZX+kQO6Ulvc4MbdGfnDRh3inrWrjrHf4SkqPcw==

2. G5 15" Gaming (5587) w/ GTX 1050Ti 4GB - https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlin...fyFH8gN2y0gRqpoCES5yjlSPuxcAcrN7KzQ/nKk45frI=

3. Inspirion 7000 (7577) w/ GTX 1060 6GB - https://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlin...HIeB6oedS6+iyxRyl+0HfsUdR8Kr+kMPErmHuTxEGFQJX

The 5587 is significantly cheaper (about $200), I'm not sure why, maybe he 9th Gen CPU? The Inspirion has an 8th Gen i7.

So I guess it comes down to a $600 laptop with an 8th gen i5, or an $850 laptop with either an 8th gen i7 or a 9th gen i5?

7577 is 7th gen i7. Though in terms of performance it should be pretty similar being all on the same architecture and having the same core count. I would get the 7577 but try to find a 1080p for cheaper. You can easily upgrade the 1080p to a 144Hz panel. I personally have a 7577 upgraded with BOE NV156FHM-N4B (144Hz IPS) and it is an excellent notebook.

That said I am selling my 7577 because it is on the larger side for a 15" (the G5 you are looking at share the same chassis though).

Configuration Details
Dell G7 15” Gaming (7590)
Dell Outlet G7 15 - 7590 Laptop
Intel Core 8th Generation I5-8300H Processor (Quad Core, Up To 4.00GHz, 8MB Cache, 45W)
15.6 Inch FHD (1920 X 1080) IPS 300-Nits Display
128GB PCIe M.2 NVMe Solid State Drive; 1TB 2.5inch SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
8 GB Memory: 8GB (1x8GB) 2666MHz DDR4 Non- ECC
Battery : 60 WHr, 4-Cell Battery (Integrated)
802.11ac + Bluetooth 5.0, Dual Band 2.4&5 GHz, MU-MIMO/160Mhz, 2x2
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB GDDR5
Windows 10 Home 64bit English

$615 good price for that?

$650 for 1050TI is not that great a deal especially since it is still a quad core.

If you want the best price performance get a 7577 or a new G3. If you want a bit nicer you can get the Alienware M15 for $880 currently with 6 core and GTX1060.

I'm not doing any crazy graphics games. Mostly shit like diablo, etc. and that machine would be another 200 dollars out of my budget, on top of the 150 I already went over. I think the G7 will do everything I need it to.
Thanks for your input though

I just turned my 5587 over to my wife. Had the 8750H and 1050Ti in it.
Good laptop with a decent screen, just wasn't holding up to being packed around all the time.
Runs Diablo 3 maxed out no sweat, and Destiny 2 with mix of medium/high settings.

get the 7577 it has the best GPU performance. it is roughly 20% better than the 1050ti

2 things you need to do it it

a. add another 8GB DDR4 SODIMM so you have dual channel memory
b. some have regular m.2 SATA SSD and not NVME so swap that slow junk out. I swapped in a 1TB Inland PCIe that was not really being used in my PC (I have 3 of them installed there) drive and wow...

I just got one and that thing is fantastic.

EDIT: CPIU is soldered down on the 7577 so no upgrade path short of MB swap
edit 2: got this replacement screen N156HHE-GA1 120Hz 98% color accuracy... direct swap
