Global Foundries has opened a patent claim against TSMC, seeking to block import of processors made with the technologies it belives are covered by its patents.

Affected companies that are listed are "Nvidia and Apple", but more of those are likely affected by the patent claims.
(AMD, NV, Apple, Mediatek, and more.)

My comment:
While GloFo is trying to play it like a patriotic sht

“While semiconductor manufacturing has continued to shift to Asia, GF has bucked the trend by investing heavily in the American and European semiconductor industries, spending more than $15 billion dollars in the last decade in the U.S. and more than $6 billion in Europe's largest semiconductor manufacturing fabrication facility. These lawsuits are aimed at protecting those investments and the U.S. and European-based innovation that powers them,” said Gregg Bartlett, senior vice president, engineering and technology at GF. “For years, while we have been devoting billions of dollars to domestic research and development, TSMC has been unlawfully reaping the benefits of our investments. This action is critical to halt Taiwan Semiconductor’s unlawful use of our vital assets and to safeguard the American and European manufacturing base.”

Its more like
We won't do 7nm, we will focus on being a "specialty foundry".
AMD goes to TSMC and Samsung
Oh noes ban imports of TSMC cause we are going out of business.

i wonder if AMD could use this as a breach of contract and would finally be the thing they need to get rid of the glofo headache.

more likely nv and apple will point at AMD and ask why they are not included, and maybe appeal based on the fact that they aren't. That said, AMD products may not use infringing tech, or tsmc may have a license to use it with AMD products.

This made me wonder, what if it was the plan all along with AMD going there to spy on TSMC and let them know they are stealing to rip foundries away from nv?

Being that they have sold off several divisions in the last year or so id say they are definitely hard up. The situation seems dire if they are resorting to suing.

doubt this has anything to do with AMD.. this is glofo realizing they're screwed and won't be able to directly compete with TSMC and samsung anytime soon. it's a standard american business practice.. can't beat them? then might as well drag them through our incompetent court system for the next 10-15 years.

There's a much more plausible explanation that their respective technologies overlap closely and there's an interlocking web of patent claims that goes back and forth, especially with broad claims. For all we know (and there's a LOT of precedent) that TSMC will make respective infringement claims, snowballing into some out of court settlement. Not all infringement cases are patent trolling, guys. Not that our patent system isn't a CF, which it is.

Maybe this is how GloFlo gets 7nm IP licencing at a bargain bin discount so they can somewhat compete again.
Kinda underhanded if it turns out to be this way.

Man, whole bunch of internet genius/tough guys up in here. Could it be that their patent has been infringed? Who here has the patents in hand or the documentation to back up your smack talk? Or are there alterior motives at play? The OP sure showed he has an axe to grind.

Boilerplate response.

It is interesting though that AMD is not named as it seems they claim their 7nm process uses such technologies that their patents cover.
