Struggling to decide - 2070S vs 5700XT?

Correct, I went 980ti - 970 - AMD 7990(died) - AMD 6950 - 8800GTS - 4870x2 - and a 7900x2 at some point, and more. i'm not loyal to any brand, the brands haven't done anything for me other than charge more per generation for their products. My CPU is AMD, used to be Intel, and i'll probably switch back at some point, whatever is the best price/performance at the time i need to upgrade.

There are many, many reviews that cover this exact same dilemma between the 5700xt and the 2070 SUPER.

I've read some 15+ reviews and both are good cards.
Ultimately it comes down to some basics: What is your System specs/What res do you game at/What type of games do you play/Are you upgrading anything else soon, etc …???

Do you have any consoles, or plan on buying one of the new Consoles this holiday shopping season..?

the power color red devil 5700 xt seems like the card to get at $439. The problem right now nothing is really in stock for either 2070 super or 5700 xt.

?? How would that work? The 2070S is a cut down 2080. Not "like" one. It is one. Same die, same memory, same bus, just less cores. It isn't ever going to be better than a 2080 with the same cooling solution.

It's a much better value because it's $500. Not because it's as fast or faster than a 2080 for $700.

If only there was that little thing, what's it called again? Evidence!!!

If you check the review guru3d you'll find that for example SotTR runs at 92fps on an OC RTX2070S vs 94 on a RTX2080S. Thats pretty much a tie.

That could be a best case scenario and I'm not implying that the RTX2070S is faster than the RTX2080 in every game or resolution. But it does come really close and it can go past RTX2080 performance when OC.

I love how on BFV the 5700 XT is beating the 2080 Ti. What is going on in that game?

Color me shocked that a custom cooled and AIB OC'd card can catch a reference card from a the same die. Did you miss the part about using comparable cooling?

Not only that, but by the same flavor of cherry picking, I can grab a couple of titles *from that same review* and say the same thing, except I can make it about the 5700XT or Radeon VII. I wouldnt do that *because it would be misleading* to say either of those are just as good as a 2080.

Hell, why stop there? Start saying it's closer to a 2080ti than a 2080! Just look at that single BF5 graph. All the evidence you need!

There are plenty of reviews that show what I said. A RTX2070S OC can come close to a RTX2080S stock.

Slower and hotter in spite of being 7nm but yeah 100 dlls cheaper and no RT
yeah there is a $100 difference 2 cards i think are worth getting is Red devil 5700 XT and the Gigabyte RTX 2070 super gaming oc . one sells for $450 the other $550 but the gigabyte overclocks better and has a slightly quite cooler and less power draw so i dunno i guess get whatever is in stock when you need to get a card?

I didn't think this would start such a heated argument.

I did state a while back that i've purchased a 5700xt (reference design), with the EK waterblock it's cheaper than a 2070 super, so i think i've got a good deal. Temps shouldn't be an issue and the performance should be 'enough'.

Thanks everyone!

Only thing I have seen on the 5700 XT side, is driver issues. Some people say running DDU once and it works, others have said running it 3-4 times resulted in games still crashing and other issues.

I think as others have said both cards are good, and I would recommend a reference 2070S over a reference 5700 XT (unless you are going to water cool it.). But I have seen Asus & Red Devil has added extra VRMs, but it did not necessarily allow pushing the card to gain more than a few FPS. But the cooling was almost 30c better for the AIB cards vs. reference cards.

I only had 1 issue with the 5700 XT in that Afterburner would flash black on the screen intermittently. I just disabled Afterburner, no problems since then.

Can anyone find an instance... where the Radeon RX 5700 Series isn't a clear choice? RDNA is no joke and only getting better with each driver.

Yes, you drive people away from wanting a 5700xt. There has also been numerous driver issues. That being said it is a very fast card for the money and IMO will mature well with drivers.

Yep, it's what's holding me off getting one atm. That and that i'm not interested in the blower version. I would like a Red Devil or the Sapphire Nitro if they make one. As pointed out to me, the the strix is overpriced.

The 5700 XT is a great card for the money. Even if there are some issue, it's not that everyone has them and I'm sure they will be fixed.

There is rarely any launch (from either side) that isn't at least a little bumpy so no new ground here.

I wanted to get one at launch, but the AIB cards do look nicer. Mine is running fine, though, and I can't see into the case so it doesn't matter much. Temps have been okay after I read AMD's blog explaining.

BFV is an anomaly where AMD does exceptionally better than Nvidia. Also the 2080ti is not a good card to get for 1080p. Its bottlenecked even by a 9900k. It shines at higher resolutions, esp 4k.

I think better than picking one off games that show performance differences, its best to look at reviews with a wide selection of games. Performance summary of 21 games, for example:

Performance summary of all resolutions:

How dare you present evidence that refutes what GamerX keeps trying to push as the truth? :D:D:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

The performance is very similar. Yet the 5700 XT costs only $400 while the 2070S costs $549 on Newegg.

If I were buying today and needed a new video card I''d go with the 5700 XT. Better bang for the buck.

Raytracing is still a gimmick as the performance hit would put the 2070s below the 5700 XT if you turned RTX on.

Freesync monitors are also cheaper on average than true G-Sync monitors. Although the fact that Nvidia now supports most freesync monitors somewhat negates that savings advantage.

But it's still $150 cheaper even if you pair it with identical monitors.

XT has great performance, $400 is a great price, FreeSync on AMD still works better than with G-Sync compatible, and 110C is not hot!!!

Didn't like the look of the Acrylic fittings, so i've gone with the EK block, should arrive in a week.

No new monitor for me, one thing at a time, besides i'm going to miss my 16:10 aspect ratio :D

I like watercooling, it's fun, most of the time...... i like the low temps too :D

small update, managed to pick up an MSI 5700xt today for £300, which is £110 below retail, wouldn't fit in their PC.. just waiting for the block now.

Get cheaper 5700XT & VRR monitor...

Well, it seems as though my monitor has just become EOL!!!! I tried to plug in the 5700xt and realised it doesn't have a DVI connector on it anymore, every GPU previous did...... So i'm limited to 1280x800 unless i purchase an active displayport to dual link DVI-D adaptor, and at the price i might as well replace the monitor. This monitor has done me well over the years, 2560x1600 16:10 ratio, low input lag, etc etc, but i think thats it!!!

Ordered an active adaptor from ebay, fingers crossed!!

I'm very happy with my MSI 144hz

If you shop around you can score them for 150-170 shipped.

No the Red Devil from Power color cost $440-450 and the gigabyte 2070 super is $550 it's only $100 difference. You don't want to buy the 5700 XT ref design for $399 that card is horrible compared to the AIB cards.

Not sure how much you want to spend on a new monitor, but this one looks like it might be nice for you.

https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16824475037

That looks like a nice monitor, although i'd rather not buy a new one just yet. My thing for monitors is not to upgrade until the previous one dies, and strictly speaking it's still working.......

I've got a DP to DVI-D DL adaptor in my bag, pinched it from work, i'll see if this works tonight, i'm still running the 980ti for now until the waterblock arrives for the 5700xt, so i've got time for a little experimentation. trying to plan for a holiday, so trying not to overspend on this upgrade.

i'll see what happens over the next few days and then decide.

I am kind of in the same boat lol... i was originally going to buy a used reference 5700XT for $350 but then it went OOS. Then I was thinking about the AIB 5700XT for around $440. Then my mind started racing.... I see this Radeon VII for $500 used but is it worth it? looked at benchmarks... nope nope

To be fair, if i didn't get such a good deal on he 5700xt, i probably would've bought a 2070S instead, as all in including the waterblock i've paid less than the 2070S FE which is about £475(I've pad about £420 so far).

It's been a while since i've had an AMD/ATI card in my rig so it's about time methinks.

i am thinking of the sort as well, if i can snag the 5700XT for $350 used and slap on a bysk block for another $100, that would be a win to me

Radeon VII is good, especially at 4K res.

However, it is not really worth it as the 5700 XT is almost as fast for less money.

Plus you can buy new with warranty, etc.

Speaking as someone who has a Radeon VII, if I could get another for $500, I'd absolutely take it over other options discussed here.

really? what resolution do you play at? I would just buy it for who knows what xD the 5700XT seems to do fairly well in the 1440P realm and at the price of $350-400 its so great

3440x1440. Once you dial in the card, the R7 is pretty decent overall. Has the same platform deficits that the 5700xt does (Far Cry games) but does pretty well overall. It's a lot closer to a 2080, stock, than a 5700xt is and it's pretty easy to get another 10-12% out of it with an HBM OC and mild core OC. So roughly the same OC headroom, but starts off significantly ahead of the 5700xt.

It was never a bad card. Just priced too high. Usually within 5-8% of a 2080, stock vs stock, but asking the same price. At $600 it would have been viable. At $500, it would have been a steal
