No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

I'm just posting to say if there are any hold-outs left out there, the game is now "official" and worth your money.

I loaded up a previous save and couldn't remember WTF I was doing last time...it had been months. Rather than trying to get re-oriented with that playthrough, I decided to start a new save. Kind of sucked to lose the upgrades to my mining beam and what not but yeah, this experience seems to be much improved so far. Just gotta find one of those welcoming Earth-like planets and I'll happily sink more hours into a new game. The first two haven't been overly friendly, but the one I'm on isn't terrible. Temps drop at night causing my hazard protection to activate, and there's the occasional firestorm but it's far better than the first one which was a "Hot planet" and drained my suit pretty much constantly.

Some may say it's cheating, but there is a nexus mod to give you full inventory slots and max stats on your ship.

Just throwing that out there :)

The biggest problem is the initial pain of being dropped into a game with a possibly large non-functional base and a sudden need for large amounts of materials for tech to get it running. Even the warp portal is offline until it gets power, and it's impossible to individually power stuff indoors. Forget the Nexus and whatever cool new stuff, I had to get salvaged tech to get solar panels then buy enough to build like 20 of them and several batteries, and that only gets me about 2/3 through a night. Of course my base is nowhere near any underground energy resources.

Welp, I am done with this game again. I changed my character look and came out of that in the splayed zombie glitch pose you sometimes see in some games. I made the the mistake of going into my ship to see if that would fix it, as a result it became a permanent part of my saved game. Nothing I can do can fix it. Trying to fly out of the nexus results in either a freeze or death. That was after I maxed my suit and picked up 750 words. GG

Edit: appears to have to do with the hub being populated or not. It may be a connection failing causing the game to glitch. when other ships were there things worked.

They really need to make it possible to resell ships. The fact that you can salvage ships is worthless if you can only trade them for something else. The game also needs some sort of way to look at broader economy - perhaps like a slimmed down version of something that Eve has.

There is some some "common sense" general streamlining and intuitive-ness improvements that I think need to happen with this game that a number of us have mentioned coming or going. There still seems to be a certain broad consensus of agreement on that. I hope they can get into some of that before too long past this heavy lifting they have been doing.

Before this update, last time I played was October of last year. I'm enjoying it, and when I loaded the save, I couldn't remember what I was doing.

For some reason, my base had none of my specialists, nor their terminals, which was kind of crappy, but good at the same time.
I've been going through the missions though and relearning the game, and I'm almost back up and running on my base. The multiplayer Hub is neat, but after I'm done with whatever missions involve it, I don't think I'll go there much.

You can do massive money farming now, you need to go to a planet that has indium, find geothermal hotspot near a mineral hotspot, and put power on one and miners on the other. $grofit$

How much yield?

Salvaged tech is my favorite way. Find a planet with it and they're everywhere.

Up to 3 million a piece per sell.

Having fun again, sold a bunch of salvaged tech for a 17 slot multi-tool and got the Advanced Mining Laser + upgrades to the Scanner and Mining Beam. Still rocking the starter ship...actually haven't found a trading post yet, but I don't have the funds to upgrade yet anyway.

Are there any "essential" mods for this game?

Faster Actions and Reduced Launch Cost were the main ones I used.

I think I'm going to install one that increases credit and nanite rewards, as well as +5 words learned each time rather than 1. Fuck it...I'm not enjoying the game as-is so might as well mod it.

from the screenshots posted a few posts back the game has great color...would look amazing in HDR...but textures still look lower-res...I thought they improved the graphics awhile back with a patch

NMS was #1 on steam sales last week. not many games ever make #1. You have to figure the game is still making decent money despite being out 4 years.... and that is why they are able to continue working on it... like a paid warframe without microtransactions....

also... they just released a patch, not sure what is in it.

Only suggestion I have is DO NOT use the combined TAA+FXAA mode. (it slathers on the vaseline somethin' fierce)

The game itself uses almost 6GB of VRAM at 1080p.... Which is completely insane for what we're getting.

I've run into an issue after getting my base back up & running. I built the terminals and I already had all the specialists, and it tells me to talk to them, which I do, but they all just say i should leave them alone.
The missions won't complete and I can't finish them. I looked online and it seems like it was an issue a year ago after the last big patch. Have any of you run into it, or fixed it?
I don't want to restart restart.

It's a stunningly good business model in this greedy day and age and they deserve all the accolades they are getting and sales too.
Takes real guts and talent to go the other route.. and it's paying off for them. Hope more do this. I paid full price from HG themselves as it (in 1st version) was all I wanted. Now it's well beyond anything we even imagined at the start.

That's an odd one.

I recommend joining the NMS discord channel and asking on there. They've been super helpful.

Same problem. Only "solution" I've seen online was to use some sort of save game editor to wipe those mission progress back to zero. Haven't tried that yet, but it blows my mind there are still game-breaking bugs like this years later.

I play on the ps4 so I don't think I can edit the saves.

Soooo... You found Arizona?

Ah, bummer. Yeah, it is pretty weak that I was able to find references of this going back way before this patch, so this has been a known issue for a long time now and never resolved.

In other news, I installed the increased rewards mod that makes all missions reward basically 10x what they normally do, and every time you learn a word you learn 5 instead. Gotta say, this is way better and really how the game should be. If you find the game too grindy, I highly recommend it.

welp, I saved a freighter and declined the offered ship. Found out much much later that my own freighter was eaten. I had not done anything with it aside from some minor storage, but still was annoying.

Eaten!?

As in gone, poof, never existed. Some people warn that using the teleporter in the nexus can do that. :(

Ooh. My wife was playing last night and chose her freighter to do a mission, it got damaged. So, I thought that eaten was a legitimate thing that could happen to it, by a black hole or something, lol.

I don't have a freighter, coulda sworn I did, but I can't remember a year ago.

Shit, I hope that didn't happen to mine...I can still see my freighter's inventory. I saved a freighter, had to decline because I didn't have enough money, but then it said some weird thing about them being under my command, but I have no control over it so I dunno WTF is going on.

I wish there was a mod to be able to transfer upgrades between multi-tools/ships/etc. Really dumb design decision when half of the mods you buy you can't actually rebuild yourself because it doesn't give you a blueprint.

well, you know you can spawn the freighter anywhere out in space, right, just hit x. You can also spawn the nexus. you don't go to it, you bring it to you. It doesn't use any resources for the jump.

Yeah I know. And thankfully my freighter and items are still there.

I play occasionally so it was frustrating to have to rebuild all my tech slots and stuff (had everything maxed out in 1st game version).

Now though after recent reset it seems difficult to get high slot Blasters... so I'll stick to my 24 slot! Used to be easier (still chance) to stumble upon them, then they got nerfed more.. my only gripe is all that stuff being turned into technology modules. Never figured out what to do with them but I think they were used as a construction component. Were quite valuable but never sold them because apparently they are useful.. sigh. Takes up lot of space.

I installed those mods today as well. The +5 words is quite good. I like it a lot actually.

However, the Nanites and units increase from rewards is literally over kill. But whatever...

After fiddling with the scienctist missions for a few hours, I gave up and restarted from scratch.
I'm progressing quite nicely so far, and the second planet I landed on was exactly like this:
Made a quick video on farming $10 mill in 15 minutes

I have $4 million, completed a the missions up to moving to a new system. I'm going to stick around, farm, then move on.

This feels like a dumb question but will mods like Reduced Launch Cost and +5 Words work in co-op MP?

(if we both have identical mods installed etc)

It can be, but at the same time, the amount of time and effort it takes to earn like what, 100 nanites or $50,000 credits or so from a space station mission is just absurd.

Thing is, it doesn't really even matter if you have a ton of money or nanites, because all of the good equipment in the game is just based on luck anyway. I'd rather make sure I have enough credits to buy a super cool multi-tool when I see it come up than miss out and lose it, potentially forever. Same with upgrades, I'd rather just be able to buy them whenever I can, because if I upgrade my multi-tool all of the upgrades go away and I have to re-buy them anyway.

I dunno. The whole grinding for credits and nanites thing in the game doesn't appeal to me, and if I couldn't mod it I would have just quit playing by now.

Speaking of rewards though, what is the deal with the Nexus missions? I think only once out of half a dozen times now, I have actually gotten rewards for completing a mission. Usually, when I complete the mission and go to turn in, I press "Complete Mission" and it just tells me I abandoned the mission and I get nothing. I'm assuming it's a bug, but is anyone else experiencing this?

I'll agree to this. More often than not, we spend most of our time actually fixed on farming, grinding out upgrades and more than to actually explore and complete the main quests.

However, considering that they've added a plethora of things to make residual income(supply depots specifically that will net you in the hundreds of thousands to millions per hour), owning your own farm, to eventually become self sustained to the point you don't need to grind or farm ever again. And I think the pleasure in doing these grinds is the moment you do become self sufficient. Enough to where all you really can do afterwards is mess around, explore and complete the main storyquest.

I suppose the journey from A to B is what the game wants us to enjoy here.

In a sense, it reminds me of Ark. A brutal uphill battle, but each correct step forward feels like an earned and enjoyable reward in itself. And then finally, once you've pretty much ruled everything, shit gets boring.

Also, no idea on the Nexus mission glitches. I've been fortunate to be able to complete every one I've gone to turn in.

Seems to work okay for me so far. I've had issues with the Nexus, but those occurred before (and after) I installed mods, so I think that's just an issue with the game.
