Top Gun 2: Maverick Trailer (2020)

More like terrifying to the Navy budget.

We have the F-35 as the front line fighter with the F/A-18's as the workhorses for a long time.

No doubt a budget hog- likely the main contributor to the F-14's demise. And yes, the F/A-18E/F will be the workhorse alongside the F-35 and EA-18G. Between the three, coastal defenses don't stand a chance.

odds are the F-35 will be the last manned front line fighter aircraft anyway. UACV will be doing the work in a generation.

Very unlikely that new manned fighters will be needed. Unmanned recon, refueling, and missile truck aircraft are a large part of extending the envelope.

All this aircraft chatter has me in the mood for a flight sim..

Any good ones out there for military craft? I'll compare the f14 while flying it from my gaming chair and drinking a coke.

If you want a flight game, Ace Combat 7.

If you want a flight sim, DCS. I suggest Flaming Cliffs 3 as it is simpler but still complex and comes with an F-15C, A-10A, MIG-29A & S, Su-27, Su-33, J-11A (modernized Su-27) and Su-25. If you want to try it you can get the game for free with a flyable Su-25T and TF-51D.

If you want something super detailed, the standalone aircraft modules are more complex and most of them are in Early Access (and stay that way for a long time). If you want a semi modern fighter there is the Mirage 2000C. If you want things still in early access, then you can get the F/A-18C and F-14B. F-16C is coming later this year but will probably take 18 months to be fully complete after the initial early access release.

I'm interested in seeing the sequel, despite my better judgement.

Tomcats are nice but I like the Harrier, Hornet, and Warthog, in that order. The F-35 has grown on me as they take off and land quite a bit from the Marine Corps Air Station here in Yuma, AZ and the house I'm living in is 500 feet below the landing path of multiple military craft.

And no list is complete without a mention of the F-104 Starfighter. (y)

Krenum

Yeah its obnoxious but some of this other stuff is entertaining as hell.

On topic -- as a kid who who watched Top Gun a ridiculous amount of times I am pretty excited for the movie. Ed Harris alone is reason enough. Also I read that they filmed a ton of in cockpit stuff, developed a camera that can pull the 8 or so Gs and fired actors who couldn't actually do the lines while actually flying. May be pretty sweet.

Yep, this will be a good one to watch in iMax. I hear Tom Cruise actually flies the plane. That's awesome.

Really, the best part of the trailer was the lack of CGI and the amount of real footage. CGI flight always looks utterly terrible. I am hoping for more flight and combat to people ratio but I understand it is a movie and expect something similar to the first movie. Better than nothing I suppose.

I was gonna mention that before, I bet he does all his own flying like in MI:Fallout and the chopper.

So the F-14 makes an appearance at the end of the trailer while Maverick has been flying the F-18 throughout the rest of the trailer. In 2006 The F-14 was retired and since it is capable of firing nuclear missles the decision was made to destroy them fearing Iran could get parts for the 15 or so F-14s they still have. The U.S. destroyed all but 76 F-14s and those were all gutted of their weapons and flight systems. There are no U.S. flight capable F-14s.
So, could an enemy, say Iran, be coming after Maverick in an F-14!? How cool of a twist would that be?

I think it would be cool to go up against F-14s in the movie purely from a movie perspective.

my take would be he jumps in one to show old stuff is still good. like him lol
or he recovers it from somewhere else and this was his getaway!

The F-14 was never a nuke capable aircraft.

Iranian F-14's are antique deathtraps at this point, none of them are really combat capable now, they patch one together enough for a "look at us and our F-14" flight on occasion.

You never know....The movie could be about Maverick's daughter trying to succeed in flying in a male-dominated world and she'll end up saving the day by shooting down tons of enemies and bringing us world peace once he's done with teaching her all he knows. (The ultimate Mary-Sue movie!)
Probably-not, but in the SJW world, who can guess what happens? :jawdrop:

The Phoenix missile is capable of carrying a 10 kiloton nuclear warhead. The Iranian F-14s are only equipped with the Phoenix missles. There are laws making it illegal to own, sell, trade or transfer any F-14 parts specifically because the Iranian F-14s are outside of our control.

While it's possible a few AIM-54's were equipped with nuclear warheads, the F-14 was unable to use them, it did not have ability to arm the warhead, no PALS equipment was ever installed on operational F-14's.

The AIM-54 was designed to be used on the F-111B, which was intended to be nuclear capable. by the time the F-14 entered service, using Nuclear warheads on Air to Air missiles was considered unnecessary, and when the last Nike-Hercules SAM batteries were shut down, we no longer used nuclear warheads on any of our Anti-air missiles

Edit: got curious about this and did some more research, evidently the PAL's systems were not fully implemented on tactical nuclear weapons until after the Iranian revolution, so it's remotely possible say, in a movie plot, that a nuclear armed AIM-54 could be fired from a F-14.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the lack of Japanese and Taiwanese flags on Maverick's jacket to appease the Chinese producers.

Wrong & wrong. The F-14s seldom carried a full load of AIM-54s, due to cost and air frame stress. Typical loadout was 2x AIM-54s, 3x AIM-7s and 2x AIM-9s. These days Iran is using modified Hawk SAM missiles and the AIM-54s have been deactivated for years. If I recall in the 90s they were somehow able to source batteries that could work with the AIM-54 but again, they're just using a mix of old hardware, some unique indigenous equipment, and other parts sourced from all over to keep it somewhat armed and flying.

With modified Hawk missiles:

The condition and how well their new avionics and weaponry works is up in the air. Probably not good. The F-14s themselves are ancient and there is only so much you can do with a physically worn out air frame.

My whole point is there's no way an active U.S. military fighter pilot could be flying an F-14 since all U.S. owned F-14s are destroyed. How cool of a plot twist it would be to have an enemy F-14 coming after Maverick flying an F-18? Unless he pulls a mission impossible stunt and walks onto an Iranian airfield and takes off in one of theirs undetected... My prediction is an enemy F-14 is coming after Maverick. I can't wait for June 2020 to see.

I wonder how long until we have fully autonomous fighter jets that don't require a pilot? They could pull off some maneuvers that would normally kill a person and if they would probably react a lot better in combat than a person. Their biggest flaw would be dependence on satellite technology but that's already the case.

This is like 40 years later in dog years. Is this movie coming out soon, or are they going to spend all of the budget on hyping up a soso movie?

Lemme know when it hits theaters

tom looks older, he just didn't eat so many cheeseburgers and crap... val kilmer on the other hand...

I can't remember the last time I was this excited for a movie.

I know, from the shower scene where tom blew val a kiss and val caught it but then later his throat was so heartbroken at the missed opportunity for the real thing it decided to go into payback mode. very tragic, but lesson learned and no more almost-kisses in this movie: finally get a worthy successor to brokeback mountain. rip health ledger <3

The F-14 may be a relic but it was one of the most beautiful fighters ever. Trailers look awesome, can't wait for summer.
