As the title states, I have a BRAND NEW Synology DS1618+ with a 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-2400T ECC Upgrade. The RAM is OEM SK Hynix and was fully tested before being used in the DiskStation.

The RAM upgrade is typically $300+ from Synology.

It would allow one to run more VMs in Virtual Machine Manager. I would also assume it helps with RAID rebuild. It is a much better overall experience than the stock 4GB.
