Behringer MS40 Two-Way Active Stereo Digital Studio Monitor Speakers PAIR Black

If you don't want used, you can still buy these brand new on Amazon for $179 (with Prime shipping) right now.

Eh, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up something reliable from an established member, and these do look interesting for the price-

What I can't find is how they sound versus immediate competition, both the speakers themselves and the built-in DAC for USB and optical.

And they are interesting- they look set up well for desktop speakers, i.e., near-field, front ported, controls on the front with 1/4" jack for headphones.

I'd just need a reliable review to compare them.

[so, have a bump]

Check around musician sites... home studio type stuff.

Behringer has a good reputation for being a low cost home studio equip company. Nothing they make is super high end... but nothing they make is crap either. In general they are a good bang for the buck. The MS40s are still sold think the model is something like 10 years old now though probably not the latest DAC.

I can't say I have heard a set of these but I have heard of them. In terms of home studio use, what I heard was they are a good bang used with a lot of the small inexpensive USB audio devices things like Line6 gear ect. So basically amature home studio stuff on a budget. Also heard that they aren't as neutral as you would hope for in a studio monitor. Then again most good studio monitor companies don't even have an option in the same price range. :)

There are some other decent options without the DAC things like the Mackie CR4 or 5 that are more or less in the same price range. I think the berhingers are probably a great option if you have a laptop with a digital out or something but crap internal dac.

That's the challenge: I've been researching desktop speakers, looking for something with decent range. For the price, these look great- and they have a bit of an attractive ugliness to them.

But if I'd have to use a separate DAC due to the internal not keeping up, that's a problem that I'd prefer to avoid- and there's really no comparison to modern products.

[I should state that I'm not looking for the 'best' DAC; that's not going to happen anywhere near this price range- I'd just want to make sure that it's not frequency-deficient nor colored in some way such that the speakers are off without EQ]
